I'm thinking of putting this quote in my signature; what do you guys think?

I'm actually not too happy about these Pistorius jokes.

Why? We aren't joking about the babe who got shot to death?

It trivializes the incident and frankly I was hearing those jokes the whole day on the radio yesterday. It's ugly and I'm tired of it.

No it isn't. With the crime in South Africa, if there is an intruder in your house and you don't react quickly, you're dead. People don't just burgle your house leave, if you catch them then they kill you. There was also a well known rugby player that shot his daughter by accident a year or two ago.

Great, shot to death in the shower, or even worse, on the loo. What a way to go, classy Pistorius.

We don't know what she was doing. This was 4:00 AM in the morning and police were already called earlier because neighbors heard screaming from the home. We'll find out more when there is more information available.

If he wasn't properly alert and was acting instinctively as he claims, he would have started running as soon as the first shot was fired
Its a pity his girlfriend didn't dump him after the first domestic violence event.
Its very rare for a violent person to change without help or intervention.

When I first heard that this guy was accused of killing his g.f. I jumped to the conclusion that he beat her to death with his leg.

I was wrong. He used a fire arm.

A couple things to say on this.

First of all case in point - terrible tragedy and immensely sad. I could see a guy with no legs sleeping with a gun though (a lot of people with physical disabilities do have CCW), and if he is a douchebag as described he's additionally trying to 'hold it down' and be macho - I still doubt this was a deliberate murder but you can see where his mentality got both him and her, and he now has to live with this for the rest of his life.

Most gun owners?
Of course it's dumb, as is purchasing and using a firearm.

So.....if I'm understanding your way of thinking correctly, for those who experienced armed home break ins they should just let it happen and either become murder statistics or rape and murder statistics - all because guns are such heinously evil objects when not in the hands of government authority that the ends would justify the means.

I don't know what to make of that mentality, just that I'm glad it can be distilled down as transparently.

Which would be wrong, of course.

I'm sure the South African criminal code is similar to "ours", which would be requiring reasonable force when the option to retreat isn't there.

Generally, shooting/stabbing/clubbing someone entering your home without anything else is manslaughter in the least (to get murder, you'll need to prove mens rea, the "guilty mind").

I'm pretty certain that reasonable force isn't death by firearm.

Mens Rea is instantly proved by the fact the firearm was bought and used. Guilty every time.

When they have a gun or knife and you don't yes, that's pretty much the case. Nice try at evasion though.

Practically everyone that I talk to now seem to think that he's guilty. Still a terrible tragedy either way.

Damn, I must be guilty as sin. I've bought and used lots of firearms....

If some one is attacking you or your children would no not "grab the gun"?

Firearms do have legitimate uses, you know.

To J-Greens that would be murder.
Purchasing a gun is planning for murder.
Even target shooting is practicing for murder.

I'd protect myself, but grabbing a gun? NO WAY. What kind of a father would that make me? Christ, I'd rather shoot myself than use it against anyone else. No no no no no... NO! I'd rather take death than use a gun.
