The fact is, there were poor black people in America prior to liberal social programs. And contrary to the popular notion in this country, black Americans actually do make up a sizable part of the American middle class - many of whom had been raised into it by help provided by social programs.
For those blacks remaining in poverty - well, there have always been poor people of every color, and always will. I would think many of these black Americans owe more of their plight to a vicious cycle of hopelessness and to the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow beating notions of self hatred and inferiority into their hearts, minds, and souls.

Could you clarify this point for me please? At first glance I thought you were suggesting that comprehensive education was a bad policy. whereas I'd argue it's the biggest success of government, erm, ever. Do you mean certain aspects that "liberals" are known to promote more than "conservatives" e.g. affirmative action? Could you name those principals for me?

I agree with you about liberal parties often failing, particularly in the US. For example, the US spends more on healthcare, both per capita and as a percentage of GDP, than any other government on Earth (or second behind the Marshall Islands as a percentage, depending on what data you use). The government alone spends amounts comparable to Israel, UAE, South Korea and Singapore, but doesn't provide universal healthcare for all US citizens (whereas those do for their own nationals). Now you can debate whether universal healthcare is a good thing if you want, but the fact remains that you're spending what could be enough for universal healthcare on programmes that don't provide the same cover, like Medicaid, so there's serious inefficiency and if the people who put those programmes in place had done a better job then far more Americans could access free or affordable healthcare. And your taxes are really low! But the upshot is that the average American spends $8000 on healthcare (including taxes), compared to $5,400 in Norway, $4,300 in Canada and $3,400 in the UK, and using life expectancy as a crude measure, gets worse healthcare! So I guess both the government and the market are failing Americans when it comes to healthcare, though of course the obesity epidemic, sedentary lifestyle etc. must take some blame.

Conservatives have a wet dream about everyone being home schooled, or paying a fee for private education where "undesirable" elements can be kept out.

"The Truth" should be banned. It causes nothing but trouble.

To start with the various sides should settle on ten lies each.

The problem as I see it, My Lies, the teachers labor union calls any who disagree racists. Mark Twain commented on School Boards, and nothing has changed.

Education is not oppression, for neither the teachers nor those who speak against them have changed the grade spread, A to F has held up through the last hundred years, and spending twice as much on F students does not change it, any more than Enriched Programs have made the As any better.

No child left behind has forced whole School Districts to cheat. Also, push the Fs out so the scores seem higher. They may be making Fs, but they are gaining life skills they need, they will not find on the street.

School is more about socialization than education, education only helps a few, being involved in the social world we live in is the most important thing.

All Men are Created Equal, but results may vary.

Like the one room school house, all ages, different levels of learning, and the standard being, being part of the group, and doing your best. Also, one teacher lead the group in learning, over years.

Now teachers can only do Forth Grade Reading to the test, and students move from class room to room, with a constant change of students. The whole place and culture of learning with a group has been lost, but Union Benefits show the new purpose of education.

The original purpose and function has been lost, and that shows up in everything.

Like the post about health care costs, more spent, less service, many excluded, where The Common Welfare was the original goal.

These truths on both sides evade the single truth, the job is not being done.
