There is another example of this kind of behavior in the bible, this time with an obvious sexual intent. The tribe of Benjamin surrounds a house and demands to "know" the people inside. They send out a concubine who is raped to death. The other Jewish tribes then engage in a genocidal war against the Benjamites and almost wipe them out. In the end they realize they've almost eliminated one of the twelve tribes and they kidnap women to help replenish them.

Actually, I'm a practicing Lutheran, so yes, I'm a believer. I just happen to disagree with my particular church body on certain matters not pertaining to grace and salvation, such as homosexuality (I'm pro gay rights, if my posts hadn't made that clear).

Imagining Soddom and Gomorah is easy for us moderns because there are plenty of places like it now (like Bangkok Thailand). But you dont see God smiting Bangkok. And Hurricane Kartrina laid waste to all of New Orleans EXCEPT the French Quarter (the sodom-and-gomorah-like part of town). So even if you're religous the story needs some elucidation.

The story begins and ends with rape so I'm not sure that rape is the issue. It was fine to capture and rape certain women. The initial sin might have been inhospitality again. Or murder. In general it's a story to promote a monarchy. It's highlighting the failure of the tribal system.

Are you talking about Sodom? It is a strange story. Tough to figure out. Maybe the meaning is simply if God sends angels to you town don't try to sexually assault them?
Being inhospitable and rape are two different things entirely. One is a certain indifference or rejection the other is assault. So you see, two different things.
However, in the story, God seems to approve of protecting someone even if it means doing a deplorable act like offering your own flesh and blood in order to protect another person. Heroic sacrifice?

I think Sodom and Gomorrah go far beyond the basic inhospitable. They are portrayed as dangerous cities where men rape at will, in gangs, and the preference is toward raping other men.
The women are careless, fat and lazy. They do not care for the poor so there are many wretched, sick people wailing in the streets with no where to turn.
Just sounds like a cesspool, basically.

I think that "Miss Manners" in the Washington Post would agree that raping your guests is inconsiderate. And murdering them is also being a bad host.
