Why is rape seen as being as bad as killing somebody?
hmm interesting point. Though that depends on how many people are actually aware of the rape given that many hide it. Also it depends on just how much you can really empathise with something like that. Surely losing your loved ones would hurt more than learning that theyve been raped?

LOL.....I wish I were that creative. I'd have to become more introspective than usual.
In all honesty, it pains me when I become introspective in that way.
I really don't want everything to just "end" when I die. I want there to be "somewhere to go to" after death.
However, alas, my "faith" points toward a nonbelief in a Supreme Being.
It would be nice to come back as another earthly being, as long as I'm Mammalian.

I'm actually OK with the idea of the nonexistance of an afterlife. Everyone dies eventually, and life's kind of a b***h as it is, so I like the idea of it eventually having an ending. That said, there are still tons of things in life that I would like to experience, but if I have a fatal brain anyeurism tomorrow, or get hit by a freight train, I'm not likely to be upset, just so long as I don't spend any time suffering before my demise.
Now, if I became a zombie after I died, THAT would be kinda cool. ![]()
So given the choice you'd rather have your head cut off than for some creep to have his way with you? I'm sure either would be horrible but I think I could get over the latter eventually. Can't get over having my head sliced off
I guess if you don't even enjoy life much in the first place though an insult or injury might be worse than death. Or even just living might be worse than death.

Im veering toward the idea that the brain is a receiver into which consciousness is transmitted. When we die consciousness goes on in a pure thought dimension. Sounds like I should be huddled in a darkened tent over a crystal ball while I say that lol but it's derived from Talbot and the Holographic prinicple so it has some scientific rigour.
Anyway ALERT ALERT THREAD DERAILING FROM THE TRACKS

I have heard this from more than one survivor. One of them has since killed herself.
The trauma of rape is a terrible thing, and it often only gets worse as time goes on.

I think it's partially due to the fact that society is kinda perverted and "obsessed with sex" in general, so it tries portray rape as being worse than murder as a way to counter that. For example, a person that views porn regularly would probably be more likely to hold this belief than one who doesn't, even though you'd think it would be the other way around. ![]()
it depends on the individual. there is no correct answer. i believe that murder is something that will consign one's life to blindness of virtue. rape is a transgression against decency and is also a very powerful destroyer of any future innocently enjoyed musings a victim may have otherwise had.
so a long and stale and paranoid life after rape may not be better than a swift departure from the debris trail that represents the rest of their life.
Rape has a universally destructive psychological effect even on people who might be described as promiscuous. The same thing applies to even seasoned prostitutes
If sex is described as like a "handshake" so why does rape have the power to totally level a person's life? I dont accept the idea of will being violated because there are a million other less terrible will violations that people emerge from unscathed. Im not even sure the sexual taboo in society is enough to explain the way sexual abuses rip peoples' lives apart.

i think it is mostly people who have never been bodily penetrated by another person that describe sex as like a "handshake". (i was actually just discussing how one's perception of sexual intercourse likely has a lot to do with whether one has ever been on the receiving end of it or not with my best friend who is a gay male, to add some context to my point.) few (if any) other types of violations involve a person actually getting inside your person physically. this might have something to do with why it feels so much more like a moral trespass than other types of personal transgression--because when you rape someone (at least when it's male-on-male or male-on-female penetrative rape) you are quite literally trespassing inside someone else's body where you don't have consent to be.

So, are you trying to tell me that the sexual abuse of males that involves making them having sexual intercourse against their will is "less bad" than when the same thing is done to women? I've heard of people, including some feminists (some well known feminists too, not just the fringe radical minority), who don't believe that rape by envelopment of males by females should not even be called rape because the victim is not the one doing the penetrating and therefore should be considered as serious. There's absolutely no way that anyone can convince me that it's not as bad or not as serious.

no, that's not what i said at all. i am not those feminists, i am myself--please don't attribute other people's words and sentiments to me.
In response to the original post. That really is an obsolete expression for most people, back from when a womans' "purity" was everything. I have been raped a number of times. The terror, the fear that I would be murdered, or rendered physically unable to leave when I reached 18, was beyond explanation. And then the waiting for my period. My mom was a nurse AND a klepto, so I took quite a bit of penicillin [these were all pre-AIDS, so that made things much easier.] All in all,for me, when I knew I was 'okay," then I was okay.
I think for many, the feeling of safety is torn off when they are raped. And I think that is probably what is the worst for them. For me, I was horrifically abused by family members my entire childhood, so the one thing that I held on to, was that I would survive until I was old enough to escape. Being raped did not interfere with my plan.
Rape is horrible. Compared to murder? For me? I love life. It's been difficult the past few years, [ much of my breakdown was related to fears that all the things my fmily had told me about myself were true]but before that? Before that for many years my life was better than my greatest fantasies as a child [ and I am what anyone would call a "loser". Never done drugs or alcohol or been promiscuous or lazy or mean, but no major accomplishments of any kind. [ I mean, I have never even come close to "employee of the month" at any of my minimum wage jobs.]
FOR ME, if I was told that if I knew I was going to be raped[ but not killed, or catch AIDS] every single day at some time, but that it would keep me alive, I'd say "Hell, yeah," So,for me, rape and murder are not even comparable.
raping someone is what men do when they need power and control. It's strange in many senses. First you got hate mixed with love, and all this dysfunctional stuff, well idk how you can climax over a sheep or someone you hate but men do that and it brings out their worst and plus they have babies doing it and the kids have all sorts of issues. Sad. It's sad because sex shouldn't be about power and control but it is.
I guess in real life though we rape each other daily. Women do it to men to by conquering them. We should be even and love one another.
