congratulations Republicans on your elections .....
mea culpa. my bad. apologies.

If I was in that group I would be angry at Obama and vote Republican. Wouldn't you? Many, many people had their jobs changed to part time, because the government mandated that employers provide them with healthcare. However, people under 40 probably don't think they need health care, so they see this as Obama taking away their income and sharing it will poor people. I would be angry and vote Republican.
but it was republicans who were entirely behind the refusal to expand Medicaid in those states. I blame republicans for this. and when I was middle class I did not begrudge the poor getting a few crumbs thrown at them. how could I do otherwise and be right with myself? I was poor, then middle class, then poor so I know how it feels from those two angles. at least part timers can now get health insurance when by and large, before PPACA that was not the case most of the time.
That is not anger. That is ignorance. Social security taxes are used to help poor people too. And people who object paying that for that reason, thinking that privatization of Social Security will solve that problem are delusional, because in reality, the majority of people, without that money being taken out and saved for them, would never save money for their retirement on their own and will turn 65 living on nothing, because the majority of people are living week to week, are self indulgent and use their money to buy crap they don't need instead of preparing for the future. I think Conservatives and Libertarians look at these people and say "screw you, it's a dog eat dog world." In reality, most of those Conservatives and Libertarians will be in the same position. (Note, I said "most.") It is only a small percentage of people who are able to save and be prepared for the future. That is human nature. Not everyone is a "dog." That's just how it is. A civilized society would protect the 95% who are not dogs from the 5% who are dogs. People who are always bitching about the poor getting "free stuff" do not fall into the civilized category. The 5%, or even the 1%, could never have created what America is by themselves, even with a Dog eat dog" mentality. We all need each other. Not everyone is strong, either physically, mentally or emotionally. That does not mean they should be discarded, not in a civilized society. Move to one of the countries where, if you get sick or hurt on the street and have nothing, you lay there and die, because of the "dog eat dog" mentality.. Stay there awhile then come back and tell me how you like it before turning America into that.

they don't care, the same failure of TOM that makes working class folk vote for people who will certainly screw them over, will keep them from getting the picture. too many people are stuck on the horatio alger meme, not knowing that it is akin to a lottery with very few winners. misfortune has to visit them personally before they finally understand the thing about "we're all in this thing together."
So if free stuff is not provided, then that is the same as "letting someone die" ? Shouldn't we provide free cars to everyone, because someone may die from heat exhaustion? And we need free homes, because people may end up in shelters, and those may not be safe. Everything should be free, because there is always the possibility whatever is not free can cause someone to die.
you are dissembling. it is a yes or no question- DO YOU PREFER the uninsured poor just die? or are you willing to abide by some public accommodation of them? yes or no. there is no middle ground, the poor are NOT going to magically "jerk themselves up by their own bootstraps" and join the fantasy land of horatio alger.
They got treatment before Obamacare, and will get treatment after Obamacare. You represent these people as helpless babies who can't take care of themselves. I don't believe that. Also, seem to have no concern for the people hurt by Obamacare.
Exactly. Poor people will do what they've always done and go to the emergency room. Then they will be asked to pay a penalty at the end of the year, which they won't pay. There are also many people who don't buy health insurance because they don't want to pay for it. If you rarely go to the doctor oftentimes you would rather run the chance of paying the penalty than paying way more than that penalty in premiums during the year.
And surprise surprise, I used to be poor myself and I know plenty of people who have had these same experiences. We went to the ER if we got the flu real bad or there was an emergency.

I was poor enough to get medical insurance from the state before we even got with Obama's program, so the ACA hasn't really done anything for me directly; in fact, my premium went up after I renewed my coverage under Obamacare. Try to figure that one out.
In any event, very little will change in these next two years before Hillary marches in. I still won't have anybody I can really vote for. Republicans are still high on the rarified fumes of Reagan hypocrisy--"wasteful government spending is evil and wrong, unless it's our wasteful government spending." Democrats don't understand their constituency; they fail to realize that American "unity" is really just a desperate, savage game of one-upmanship where equal opportunities would spoil all the fun. The Independents are boring dingbats with no distinct vision. And Libertarians live in a fantasy world where "the market" is a magic wand that can cure all of society's ills.
Obama was the only politician who ever gave me something to vote for, and he mostly failed to deliver. But thanks to him I got to stay on my mother's insurance for a while, and I can pay my student loans in increments that I can afford, so I'm grateful for that.
They didn't purposely "shut down the government". As a matter of fact it also happened a number of times under Clinton and it has happened quite a few times in the past. People simply made a bigger deal out of it this last time. So they couldn't figure out the budget and they had to have a recess. Big whoop folks, it's not even worth a mention. This issue has been used as a political tool to affect the masses, and it's nothing more than a tool.

Yeah the ACA is great for the absolute poor; they get it free. Sucks for many though.
We're supposed to just let the poor crawl into a hole and die?
you got the answer to that when you watched that political meeting with ron paul when the question was brought up, "should we let them [the poor who can't afford medical care] die?" and members of the audience screamed "YES!! !" after all, we are just "useless eaters."
Well, we'll see who gets the last laugh when, as in Christ's words, "The meek shall inherit the earth."
More so republicans will lose a lot of support when peoples will begin to notice the effects of climate change. Combining that with the demographic changes, and it's likelly republican party won't survive 21th century. The consequence after that I guess will be the democrat party splitting in two between the left and the right wings of the party. History won't be nice to conservatives.

In other words you are happy that now even more money will be drained from the poor and middle class and given to the uber rich.
It is amazing how propaganda and a few well placed lies can make a man vote against his best interests.

Don't kid yourself. Practically everyone's incomes skyrocket when they take up a legislative post. It's because they cannot realistically be penalized for inside trading. And more often than not lobbyists actually write the biggest bills like ACA (look it up, the lobbyists wrote that bill), shower money on the feds, and put money in their own pockets after the laws are passed when they buy stocks. It's like a rigged lottery.
So if you think that Democrats have anything more in common with poor people than Republicans you're deeply mistaken. If that were the case you'd think that all of these regulatory associations that they've started would have the ethical imperative to perform their apparent function, but we don't see that with FDA or USDA for example, do we? We don't see that at all.
The ugly truth is that many of these members of the legislative branch, the supreme court, and the president's administration as well, are all merely names and faces that do the bidding of their sponsors. We don't get to vote on the people who really decide what is law and who gets what. The electoral colleges were already bad enough, but now we've got the same issue that scared Teddy Roosevelt to death and we still haven't learned. Even the first presidents and many of the federalists and anti-federalists wrote about their fear that eventually all the votes would just be bought, that functionally this country would be an oligarchy.
But what I do see from the Republicans is a number of whistle blowers on this issue, and I mean genuine whistle blowers, not blowhards like everyone else who's said "he/she only cares about special interests and I don't", but people with a voting record to back it up, people who are forthright about not having unethical income. And surprise, surprise they are the libertarian element of the party. They realize that government is inherently flawed just like companies are, the difference being that the consumer decides what they want and it's tough titties for the company if it doesn't supply it, while the government can employ subterfuge on a whole other scale.
We have the most natural resources of any country, and quite a few "middle class" people who are millionaires that struggle at businesses (Dave Sylva's Trucking comes to mind). I call these people middle class because there is an obvious gulf between them and the elite who buy votes. They don't own multi-billion dollar corporations and they primarily seem to be the ones getting hurt by all of these sanctions, taxes (Net Investment Income Tax is a recent one that really hurts), and now good ole ACA. But bigger corporations and banks will do just fine, because the banks are "too big to fail" and they get a free pass for unethical behavior, and big corporations can outsource jobs, illegally enforce patent rights they don't have and just lawyer up because they s**t on golden toilets, ignore FDA regulations until they finally get a little slap on the wrist, and of course they can watch people die and then not even own up to it because now they're a "new company" (why thank you General Motors).

Just dying may be my choice. BTW, free? I paid for my medical coverage. Okay, it was at a reduced rate but it was certainly NOT free! Also, if ACA is repealed, I will lose the only insurance I've had in over 15 years, and have to choose between existing in medical debt which is NOT living, or figuring out the best way to commit suicide. Before ACA in my state, if you were an adult without children you did not qualify for medicaid, no matter how poor you were. If the ACA goes I can see Medicaid reverting to it's previous status as well.

I can remember back when Reagan was first elected, and he had tried purging the social security disability roles. Immediately, there had been suicides, including one man who had shot himself in his local social security office, leaving a note reading which said they were "playing God."

Just because you were happy with the medical coverage afforded to second class citizens hardly means that the rest of us want that. Healthcare is a basic human right in industrialized societies. If anything, it should be something championed by Christian believers.

I recall reading years ago how Horatio Alger may not have been writing so much about poor boys getting rich on their own effort because he wanted to promote the notion of personal achievement, but because he liked young boys (not young men mind you, but children) a little too much, if you get my drift...

reminds me of another political quote-
?If you can convince the lowest white man he?s better than the best colored man, he won?t notice you?re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he?ll empty his pockets for you.? Lyndon Baines Johnson
IOW this election was ALL ABOUT sticking it to the standard national scapegoats [working class, uppity women, minorities especially the one in the white house]. the landslide numbers tell the tale. the people who committed this petty rashness will eventually find out they've been played.

A very wise man indeed. At least we still have Maher, Stewart, and Colbert to convey political truth through humor.
