Halloween costume PC rules: Good idea or[expletive removed]?
meh, applying pc rules to Halloween costumes would just make it harder to pick out the spoiled eggs. wear your insensitivities on your sleeve lol. plus if Halloween costumes were regulated that would be super boring. I don't want to live in a fake happy rainbow land where no one is allowed to admit they are an a**hole.
although personally I avoid humanly suggestive costumes and stick to offending animals and plants with my subpar costume making skills ![]()

Both my daughter and I are transgender; the genetic variations run on one side of my family. I have known two trans people who committed suicide after being beaten and raped for being trans. Every year transgender people get together in November across the nation & around the world to hold memorials for those who were murdered in the last year specifically for being transgender people. There are as of yet no group memorials for the LGBT children thrown out of their parents homes for being "sinners" just because of their neurology.
And once again, I feel I must point out the sad irony of attacking those who are neural atypical (yet harm no one) or those who stick up for them, on Wrong Planet...
I'm a very outspoken supporter of lgtb rights and also not at all racist. My point is that a Halloween costume has nothing at all to do with discrimination or bullying or any of the as*hole activities that racist and homophobic douchebags engage in. I'll be the first to stand up and get in somebody's face if I see or hear of them doing something like that and I won't put up with it on my watch and don't think anyone should. What pisses me off is that some groups are now labeling everything as some sort of ist, ism, phobia, bullying, hate, etc.
People have lost touch with reality. If somebody dresses as Caitlin or Bruce Jenner, or both at once, its because she is a public figure and theedia coverage, not to bully or hurt someone. If somebody goes as an Indian that's because the image of the Indian in the headdress is a nostalgic figure from old Westerns and other media. Its part of American culture not a desire to recreate the trail of tears. If my daughter goes as Cinderella it's not to reinforce gender stereotypes and if my son dresses as a soldier its not to encourage people to be violent. Its Halloween and its fun. You get to dress up as something or someone else. It has nothing to do with any real issues.
I'm so tired of people looking for offense everywhere. There is a difference between stopping discrimination and mistreatment and analyzing the minutes of every little thing and making a federal case out of something because somebody somewhere might take it the wrong way and that's exactly what this is.
I'm Southern and I will not be harmed if you dress up like Scarlett O'Hara. I'm Italian and won't be harmed if you dress like Tony Soprano. I'm Pagan and won't be harmed if you dress like a witch. I'm also Catholic and won't be harmed if you dress like the Pope. I'm an aspie and won't be harmed if you dress like the aspie kid from Parenthood. I would also not be harmed if you went as any negative stereotype of any of those groups. Because it's Halloween and you're dressing like that for fun. And if you were doing it with malicious intent then I would still not be harmed because how anybody dresses for Halloween does not effect me. Or you. Or anyone else. How would it harm you or your daughter if someone went as Jenner?
I'm for stopping actual discrimination and bullying but I'm also for recognizing what it is and ignoring things that don't harm anyone. How exactly does a Halloween costume harm anyone in your opinion?
This kind of s**t goes so far over the line its not funny. This kind of excessive sensitivity and paranoia only encourages the rest of us to ignore complaints because we have heard so much BS that we don't believe anything anymore. Offense mongering is not only crying wolf, its crying rabid wolf pack attack when you have simply seen a photo of a stuffed animal toy cat in a magazine.
So because no one intended any harm from their actions...none occurs. Do you realize that is the basis of your argument? And not only is it false, but by the very act of choosing that costume the person *is* intending harm; the image that they wish to promote with said costume. It wouldn't be "amusing" to them if it weren't making fun of someone or in some way promoting a certain image.
Insofar as "This kind of s**t goes so far over the line its not funny"...tell that to trans kids who are affected by people like you and end up feeling terrible about themselves. Tell it to the ones who are treated with hatred and cruelty by people with your attitude and certain social privileges that they do not have.
Should we as a culture take that same attitude with say, autism, then? Or just the people who are different from you?
'Cause I remember those days and they were truly awful.
So now in your little opinion I'm transphobic? And possibly homophobic? Really? You got that from the fact that I understand that Halloween costumes are not harmful?
This year going to dress up as someone I do think should be reviled and bullied. I'm going as the PC nutjobs. Now if I can only figure out how to use the costume to show I have no common sense and only half a brain.

Are children going trick or treating out dressed as Caitlyn Jenner? Not without their parents say so.
To me this holiday seems to have started out for children, and then the adults thought "Why are my kids having all the fun?, I have get into this." The they decided one day was not enough so stretched it out over two weeks or more.
Personally I think they also get out of having to give out candy, because they are too busy out partying. Having your house TPd is a small price to pay.
I'm pretty sure then in the 80s it was still mostly dressing up as ghosts or pumpkins or witches maybe the odd zombie or vampire.
It no longer seem to have the Brothers Grimm flavour to it.
I bet you wouldn't consider dressing up like that today. I think that demonstrates one of the fallacies that the PC campaigners fall into. They look at totally innocent decisions made by a kid based on a TV show, and try to imbue it with deep social meaning, that just isn't there. Rather than empathize with the kid and see their innocent world view, the wish to impose a historical world view on the kids. Sometimes, you just have to let the kids be kids and trust that they'll figure it out later when they're able to process the information.
The other thing they often do is decide for a downtrodden group what they should and shouldn't be offended by. If that's not cultural imperialism, I don't know what is.
As for boys dressing up as Caitlyn Jenner. I have to laugh at people calling PC on it. For at least some of these boys, their going to look back at this as their first inklings of their trans leanings, their first exploration. It was the first time when they had a pretext to feel safe. The fact that it's the older members of their own future community (or its self appointed guardians), that shouted them down is all kinds of ironic.
Let's be clear of one thing. Although the PC brigade may be shouting loudest, they're probably less of a brigade than one or two individuals shouting into the void. Don't let the haters ruin your fun.
Regarding Cultural Appropriation.
Tex-Mex food was more appropriation than absorption, at least initially. It was about as Mexican as Anglo-Indian food like Kedgeree, Mulligatawny, Coronation Chicken, as in not very. However British Indian like Chicken Tikka Masala and Balti are both unique British and clearly derived from Indian Cuisine.
Regarding People. I would argue that Native American plight was more to do with subjugation than cultural appropriation, including the mockery. Those that appropriated their culture were actually hippies and new-age people. Both of these things caused anger. Now it more a case of chronic neglect. They need something to draw attention.
Now you could argue that cultural appropriation has made them more invisible. But Mexicans also have this cultural appropriation you talk of and they are not invisible. Therefore it is more down to small numbers and that that they are dispersed so they are easy to forget about.
There are some very good reserves I'm sure, but many of them are just horrible. You can argue that in terms of quality of life and life expectancy they are much better out of these reserves than in them. Many of the reserves are no where near their cultural heartland. They have a atmosphere of Grand Apathied "Homelands" especially as they are a federal concern. Often very little if any traditional culture is practiced in these places.
Economically speaking you can do a lot with a small populations, so long as you have a resource to set up viable industries. However been stuck in a places with nothing there only breeds unemployment, alcoholism and misery.
The more isolated they are the more problems you would expect. Canada which has a better reputation with it Home Nations still has issues it the remote areas.
So some, ravers wearing a headdress isn't really what is making them invisible. I can understand it being offensive to some, but the awareness of Native American is much less than when those bad Western movies were about. Not that that was always welcome attention, however it lead to some awareness of civil right issues particularly by the 70s.

As for cultural appropriation, what is wrong with wearing or eating something from another ethnic group? Now, along with most other Alabamians I'm part Indian. I have 1/4 Cherokee. I'm even a member of a tribe as are my kids. I don't participate or do anything with them but the kids may when they get the time. We are very proud of being part Indian down here and there is a lot of stuff that reflects that. I don't see anything wrong with me or anyone else wearing the jewelry or the feathered accessories.
I see a lot of clothing from other cultures that is beautiful and I don't see the problem with wearing it simply because its pretty. I have some things from India and I have a very pretty Chinese dress. They are obviously from those cultures but I don't see anything wrong with wearing it.
I also see a lot of you white guys dressing all gangsta because of rap music. Most folks call them wiggers but I like the term ghettotucky. Lots of them even talk with the accent for it as well. They usually grow out of this. If it is so offensive to black people then why aren't their black friends who BTW dress and talk the exact same way, say something to them? Could it possibly be that its because its based on rap and not on a particular race so its actually a fashion style rather than stealing a culture?
I'm half Italian and my youngest son is very much a Guido. You know the stereotype. That's him. All he needs is an IROC Z. Neither he nor I get upset when people who have no Italian blood adopt the same style. As a matter of fact his gf who is Irish and Cherokee calls herself a Guidette and dresses the part and nobody here is upset with her.
When does it become a crime to the PC squad? What does a person have to do to steal a culture? Why is wearing a style that you enjoy such an insult? I'd love to wear a sari but I don't. Not because I think it would offend anyone - I don't see how it would - but because I think it would look out of place on me. However I did wear a hijab and more for a week in the late 90s when I did an article about the experience of Muslim women in Bham. I dressed like them and lived by certain rules for a week to write about it. I felt out of place and with the all black and the veil I felt oddly like a ninja. It was certainly eye opening though, and that's what the story was about. But I don't see anything offensive in ordinary fashion choices. How is that now offensive?

some disorganized thoughts here- how many people here are in favor of eliminating Halloween? if so many folks find it to be an offensive public spectacle, why not ban it? eventually it will be driven underground in any case, based on current trends. too many offended folks will take to violence to redress their grievances with other non-PC folk so law enforcement will probably weigh in favor of a ban. already many public schools have banned it. just a matter of time. I thought Halloween was supposed to be a brief vacation from seriousness, a short silly season, all fun. not anymore. why can't people just get along?

The concept of cultural appropriation is something I've only come across relatively recently. You have to view it as a sign of progress. If you're a natural crusader, and you can't find any heinous crimes to crusade against you have to invent some. I think that's where the idea of CA came from.
We can be bemuse or even a bit annoyed when we see "mainstream" performers adopt art forms from a minority and suddenly be big hits. Bing Crosby did it. Elvis did it. Paul Simon, Eminem... They all had the accusation, but they also all proved that they could stand on their own talent. You could also argue that they were a necessary part of the genre (and it's performers) gaining more mainstream acceptance.
The funny thing about CA is that those who complain about it obviously haven't thought through what they're saying. What if they were successful. When I go to international conferences, should I tell the Chinese delegates that they're not allowed to wear business suits? Are women wearing pants a CA of men's fashion?
The single biggest driver of cultural and social evolution is appropriation and adaptation. You see how the people over there do something, then you do it, adding your own flair. Disney movies informed Anime, which has effected American cartoonist, including Disney. British fantasists created the a genre that now has writers from all over the world. To forbid CA is to consign us all to our separate, static cultures. We would essentially be confined to something between a zoo exhibit and a living history museum.

I think OOM has a point. In fact, supposing someone dresses as a character such as Mickey Mouse, Darth Vader or one of the Nazgul it's because they like that character and have an interest in them. Why should dressing up as any particular person, thing or type be necessarily seen as "mocking" that thing because in my experience (I have never celebrated Halloween as it's not big in our country: talking about fancy dress parties as a kid) you dress up as something / someone you like and can be seen as an honour rather than some BS about political correctness. Even so-called cultural appropriation should generally be seen as honouring that culture. Ever heard the phrase "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"? We tend to take the good things from various cultures, such as their dress or food, but it is because we like it, not in order to "steal" their culture!
There are most likely some things that remain tabu and insensitive to dress up as. Dressing as Donald Trump would be funny, but not as Hitler or Pol Pot.
Like the OP I would defend LGBT, transgender or any other "minority" rights with all of my being and have absolutely no time for bigots. Even my own family doesn't understand the issue of being transgender, among other things.

Honestly I am so sick and tired of all this "I'm so offended over something that doesn't really matter" crap that I think one day my head will explode. Our local high school already actually did away with the mascot because they were afraid somebody would cause a stink over it. Nobody had complained about it and in fact a lot of people complained when they stopped having the mascot, especially the boy who was playing him. Our team is the Choctaws and it was an Indian. (In Alabama most people are part Indian and we are proud of it, nobody was being mean by having an Indian as a mascot - we have TONS of stuff here in this state devoted to our shared Indian heritage and culture and it's great - but I'm sure somebody somewhere will screw that up for us too - they are already trying to take away our rebel flag - but they won't succeed with that here anyway)
Has anybody here actually told their kid no they can't be this or that for Halloween because of this crazy stuff that people have started up now? I'm pretty sure that the offense whiners would have a field day with something my oldest son went as a few years ago when he needed a last minute costume and had no money or time to put something together - he got a plastic garbage bag and cut neck and arm holes in it and put it on over his clothes. He went as "White Trash" LOL! I thought it was genius, funny, and of course so cheap it was almost free.
Whats ya'lls thoughts on this, and if you do think that it's right or right to an extent, what are the things you think kids shouldn't go as and why?
One thing that I do want to say though, is that if somebody is so way way overly sensitive and has so much time on their hands to contemplate this sort of thing and seeing a kid come to their door dressed as something they disapprove of is going to send them into such a fit of depression, anxiety and of course PTSD flashbacks or whatever it is they are gonna have from seeing the kid - because everybody apparently has PTSD nowdays - then they need much more help than parents making their kid's Halloween costume choice into a cultural minefield will ever give them. How far over the line do we have to go as a society with this "I'm so offended that I can't function now, because of silly little BS" before somebody says that it's enough and that the offended party get some sort of psychiatric help if they get that upset over something that doesn't even concern them.
So, who is buying in and who isn't?
Well, after looking at the past three pages I see you've smoked out some of those people you were referring to.
I agree, though. For the most part it's manufactured offense. Someone see's an opportunity, no matter how trivial, to be offended so they either feign offense for themselves or on behalf of those they believe should be offended.
The thing is you can't get rid of those people. Best thing to do is have some fun with them at thier expense by screwing with them at every opportunity. It's fun and usually FREE.
PS: You've given me an idea.
This halloween I'm going to give kids with non-PC/offensive costumes (if thier are any) extra candy.

Halloween isn't going anywhere. Banning it will only make it more popular. What are they going to do, have cops go around on halloween night with paddy waggons and haul in kids who are out trick-or-treating?

Sigh. I realize this thread may just be someone trolling for a fight, but...41% of transgender people attempt suicide. Roughly the same percent of homeless children are LGBT. Not because of any mental illness of theirs. Rather it is because of the way people treat them for being different. Bullying, on the other hand, *is* a mental illness. Several really, depending on the actual causes. For some reason compassion is not valued much in some portions of our larger culture.
What you ironically call "PC" is really just another name for trying to stop bullying. You are claiming the right to treat others with cruelty even after being told it is causing harm to them, either directly or indirectly.
I don't know your reasons. For some it's based on an insecure assumption of racial or gender superiority, for others it's just because the person feels the need to make someone else feel bad, anyone else, to make themselves feel better (hence the, "we were just having fun"). Either way, it is ethically and morally wrong.
Children are accepting of transgender class- and playmates. It is their (typically, but not necessarily conservative Christian) parents or grandparents that teach them hatred and cruelty for those who are different. Halloween doesn't have to be a vehicle for adult insecurities and need to be cruel.
It's incredibly sad to see this sort of behavior on a forum dedicated to those who have themselves been treated so poorly for being "different". It wasn't so long ago that autistic people were normally treated the same way that people on this thread are treating those of other gender identities and races...
Dear sweet Jesus nobody is trolling for a fight, but of course you would see it that way. Its Halloween for f***s sake. Dressing up isn't theental illness nor is it bullying. Making a huge deal and needing therapy and whining over somebody else's Halloween costume is a mental illness though. You are making a mountain out of a molehill. You might want to dress up as " proportion" for Halloween because that is certainly an imaginary creature for you.
For real, get a clue and learn what is and isn't something to take serious and stop trying to lump everything in with actual serious and harmful discrimination and bullying. Its Halloween. Its a costume for fun. People need to stop whining over things that are harmless and also have no malicious intent.
Why am I not surprised to see one of these here?
You should take your own advice with regards to your deep butthurt over the rebel flag. It`s just a rag. Get off of it crybaby.

Hogan's Heroes was a funny show. From that same era this would REALLY offend people today
Thing is Jewish people wrote that in an effort to make fun of the people who did so much harm to them. Still offensive?
Closer to what we are all here for I would be a rich man if I collected a dollar for every post saying we should not use Aspie because it is ablelist against more severe autistics. The idea behind Aspie was to reappropreate the term Aspergers which the medical establishment looked upon negativly by making a cute version of the word. How that became offensive is beyond me. Same idea with high functioning. There are legitimate reasons not to use high functioning but bieng ableist is not one of them.

It seems ironic that the people complaining about the "whining PC" people are whining just as much.

If my daughter wanted to dress up as a little stripper or a hooker or a woman's p*ussy, I would say no because she is too young for that. If my son wanted to be a penis or a cigarette or an alcoholic beverage, I would say no to that too because it's inappropriate for a child.
But I am fine with the other costumes. I have let my son be Spiderman for three years straight and now he wants to be Mario this year. As a five year old, I went out as a Native American (Indian) for Halloween. When I was eight and nine and eleven, I went as a princess. When I was in 6th grade I went as cat woman. When I was 13 I went as a Hawaiian.
People who react to innocent costumes can get over it.
