from a foreign point of view
our country has been under 'liberal' rule for almost 12 years now, and it has never been better.
Thanks to the Labour Party we now have free health care for almost everyone (NHS), a good education system, good enviromental care of our towns and on average a more accepting enviroment.

The one thing that keeps going through my mind is margret thatcher *shudders* and what her and her right-wing goverment did to this country. Anyone who was middle class or below suffered a great deal under her rule. We were never worse off.

Our whole country was standstill when the presidential race was on (shows how sad we are ) and EVERYONE wanted Obama to win. We recognised Thatcher in McCain, the same sort of promises and the same solutions. TBH nobody in my society anyway, thinks of republicans with respect. Most thought you had learned your lesson with bush (We all hated him )

Still, It's your country. :)

He's also sending a bunch more troops to Afghanistan. I think he's putting the numbers up to 100,000 if I'm not mistaken. In the 80s, the Soviets had 150,000 troops there and they STILL couldn't take it over. We certainly won't be able to do it now. Not to mention that he won't even think of withdrawing any troops from Iraq for quite some time (if he does withdraw any...).

Well, our motives for invading Afghanistan are quite different than the Soviet's. Not to say it won't still be a dismal failure, but the idea at least is to go after bin Laden and al Qaeda.

Well, at FIRST it was quite different. Then all of a sudden it became "Let's free the Afghans from the Taleban and spread democracy!!" That takes a lot more work...

I've also read about plans to ban a bunch of various assault weapons and hike up taxes on ammo and such to ridiculous amounts. It's kind of like trying to destroy the 2nd amendment in a blatant, yet at the same time subtle way.
I've also read about plans to sell our country to Satan and eat babies for breakfast. Don't believe everything you read.

Well, when I read that I didn't immediately say "Oh my god, it must be true!", but it does sound pretty plausible to me. It's actually one of the few differences between the Dems and Reps... The Dems like to try and ban guns. So even if it's not happening now, it probably will sometime in some form in his first term.

Well, I guess now he's talking about punishing AIG for giving their executives bonuses with our tax money. I mean the rhetoric sounds good, but with how much corporate lobbyist money he got (even more than fellow puppet John McCain), I'm not holding my breath. I do hope he does go through with the punishment though, so I can at least say "well, at least he's done ONE good thing..."
A populist publicity stunt and nothing more. In terms of the bailout money the executive bonuses are spare change, and the bonuses were included in the executives' contracts before the bailout, so it might not be legal to stop them going through.

Even if it is a drop in the bucket, it's still an outrage that any of the taxpayers' money is being used to line rich peoples' pockets for failure.
The thing I find most irksome about this is that Obama still plans to give out MORE bailout money to these goons.

I can say this though: He's going to get away with a lot of bad stuff in his first term. Just like various world leaders before him, he's going to exploit his cult of personality to its fullest extent.
Not only his cult of personality, but the fact that with very strong Democratic majorities in both legislative chambers, he has virtually free reign to control the US federal government for at least the next two years.

Yeah, that's definitely worrisome. One of my main gripes about the two party system is how easy it is for it to end up in high power concentration like this.

What first made me doubt McCain was his remark that noone would mind a war that went on for 10 000 years.

Sarah Palin was what made McCain utterly unelegible.

I think McCain is a really good man, but he contested about 8 years too late. If only he won on 2000..... could things have probably been better today?

But c'mon, could anyone truly think that just because someone flew a plane in Vietnam and chose to go head-on towards his target instead of trying to evade flak/anti-air and got shot down for it is able to know "what it takes" to win a war? Yes, he had true grit and determination under extremely adverse circumstances. That is to be applauded and commended, but don't tell me that it's the sole qualifying factor to "win" a war. I've had plenty of officers, NCOs and other commanders who might be very physically fit, but couldn't lead a section/platoon/company worth a damn.

So John McCain was not Alexander the Great. True. But he was a warrior who fought the fight, survived the p.o.w. camp at the Hanoi Hilton with his body and soul intact. He was not a yellow belly coward like Bill Clinton for example. And he learned the color of blood, unlike Prince Obama. His mettle was tested and he passed the test. That is no guarantee of leadership, but it is a test of character.

His biggest mistake was choosing Sarah of the Frozen North for his running mate. I know that Sarah was a babe and I can understand how an old Republican could get wood watching Sarah draw her magnum from a holster strapped to her creamy thigh. Even so, it was not a good choice.

Well, we are now ruled by Prince Obama of the Kraal. Let us watch this Witch Doctor of the Harvard Law Review run the country into the ground. We already have a sample. He hired a lightweight to be secretary of the treasury at a time when we are in a financial tough spot. He hired Super b***h Hillary to be our Secretary of State. Let us see what happens and watch the fun. Every competent person he has hired so far, has difficulty remembering to pay their taxes or has a conflict of interest. One of his people is a former executive for AIG. Woo Hoo!

And this hypocrite who ragged on Dubya Bush (not the brightest bulb on the tree, for sure) for deficit spending is running up a deficit of a trillion and a half a year with no end in sight. Apparently this Medicine Man things throwing money at the problem and sticking pins into AIG dolls, will cure what ails us.

One good thing out of all this. Prince of Obama is no Dick Cheyney or Karl Rove.

"Test of character"? The last time I heard someone say about "character", it was mentioning a guy they'd like to have a beer with. "Learned the color of blood"? What kind of demented Biblical literature are you paraphrasing from? Have you even served in an armed force (sans the "well-regulated militia.... right to bear arms" bit), or just another REMF?

Furthermore, this is not just another "financial tough spot". This is the biggest economic depression/recession/whatever you want to call it since the Great Depression in the 30s, and it's a pretty huge job for anyone to handle. Immediately blasting someone for being 50+ days on the job when he's probably still just figuring things out is a symptom of today's media, conservative and liberal that are incredibly impatient in today's culture that constantly demands instant gratification. It's easy for you to be part of the peanut gallery and echo Limbaugh in hoping that your current President fail, and with it your own country. If you really think of yourself as a patriot, the least you could do is to support whichever leader who is in charge now.

This is only the beginning of your new Administration and already you are complaining of not receiving instant results. Have some patience. I'm no longer Christian, but if you're one of them, you ought to know that God works in his own way(s) and doesn't have things appear out of thin air. Public policy works the same way.

Listen buddy, I have forgotten more about the Great Depression than you have ever known. My father and mother lived through it. I was born in 1936, about three years before the turn-around in 1939-1940 but I got the scoop form -all- my older relatives. The Great Depression had bread lines, people sleeping under bridges and very little hope. The "safety net" programs we take for granted did not exist back then. Even Republicans have the brains not to take down all of the safety nets because if they did we would have a riot.

We are having a tough time, for sure but compared to the Great Depression this is nothing.

The dole is in place and no one is starving because of this down turn.

Me a Christian?! !! !! Bite off your tongue and swallow it.

I am willing (what other choice do I have) to wait and see. I look forward to telling all the partisans of the Griot Prince Obama of the Kraal "I told you so!". While it will not cure our ills, I will get great satisfaction from having the last laugh.

While I think Obama is a fool I hope he does the right thing.

I'll give him points for offering an olive branch.
