If God punishes you by sending you to Hell for eternal punishment it will teach you nothing since you have no future and the only thing you will have learned is that God is a sadist. It's like the hydrogen bomb which is only useful as a threat but if it is used it will be so destructive as to destroy any reason for its use. It's a kind of dynamic oxymoron.

The God of the Christians is a vengeful monster. Punishment is revenge, not instruction.

As to nuclear weapons, just keep in mind that the only two such used in anger saved millions of lives. Nuclear weapons are good if they kill or subjugate the enemy. The purpose of war is not to instruct the enemy but to destroy him and his assets.

I know you are in love with very powerful destructive weapons, but I do not see how an assault on Japan that was teetering on the brink of surrender could have cost millions of lives. I don't think millions of troops were involved.

Since God is all powerful He has the last word on anything. Obviously Satan cannot do anything that God would not permit and agree to.

Correct - at least in earlier Judaism. See the Book of Job, in which Satan helpfully smites Job with sore boils and other nasties. Satan's role back then was to test humans by seeing if he could make them do bad stuff (in Job's case, curse God), and he was definitely working on God's say-so. (Well, OK, God says 'Do your worst' and Satan sorts out the specifics.) Nothing to do with sending anyone to Hell, though. At the time, there was only a shadowy, dusty, rather boring but not particularly hellish afterworld called Sheol. The fiery, tormenting Hell wasn't nicked from the Persians till a lot later.

Of course the Bible is all full of all sorts of weird stuff but the Book of Job seems to me terribly dismaying. If a man had a wonderful dog that loved and obeyed him and the man, just for a test, repeatedly kicked the dog to see if he could make the dog bite back, I would find that man totally disgusting. Is one permitted to view God with the same point of view? Especially since God is claimed to be omniscient and know the future?

You realize of course the early Christians believed in reincarnation and like the Buddists believed you had to reach a certain level of purity of soul to find Enlightenment or the Kingdom of Heaven which may take many lifetimes to accomplish. Jesus makes it pretty clear Heaven is found in this life and any reward afterwards is merely another dimension to this. Much was edited by the early Catholic Church when they cannonized the Bible including everything pertaining to reincarnation, the pre-existence of and progression of the soul. Google 'the lost gospels' if you are sceptical. Now Paul talked about death and hell being thrown into the lake of fire, so hell and this lake are different things and he is tripping heavily on the holy spirit and talking metaphysically, so unless they've been that high themself I doubt anyone can say for sure what he meant. Incedentally historical records say somewhere that the book of revelations nearly didn't get into the Bible at all, after reading some of Pauls more out there 'revelations' in the lost gospels I see why.

*laughs*

Here's my problem with the "lost gospels", and an analogy we can all relate to:

Jesus was a pretty major figure at the time He was doing His thing, so a lot of people wrote books about Him. But not all of them liked Him, so a fair chunk of them were probably libelous. 2,000 years later, people aren't sure which books are true.

Analogy:

In 200 years, historians will start trying to figure out who the real GWB was. They'll look through the major books and think he's an idiot, but they'll research deeper and find a whole storehouse of books claiming he was the best POTUS ever, even better than Nixon or Taft. (it's been 200 years, they'll be really, really confused anyways.)

Which books should they believe?

Better than Nixon. Now there's a thought.

Yeah, scary as hell, isn't it?

I'm not a historian, but the only great thing I can think of that Nixon did was that he stated he'd either win in Viet Nam or go home. So he had his generals blow up everything that looked important, and when that didn't work, he brought our boys home.

I've never heard of a single law that man passed, which is pretty sad, since some of them might have been pretty beneficial.

Since you admire the man so much it would do you a great deal of good to look into the Watergate affair and figure that one out.

I *don't* admire the man. He brought our boys home, for that I respect him. Trust me, I'd respect him a whole lot more if the Watergate scandal hadn't brought a new suffix into American politics. He was an a**hole, not even his supporters argue that he was a nice guy.

Actually it was the Viet Cong who "brought our boys home". Nixon merely agreed to their wishes.

I'm sure if God is there he's turned down the heat to make it comfortable. Saves energy too.

Presidents don't pass laws. They only sign them, after they have been passed by the house and senate... BTW, Nixon was a senator and a Vice President long before he was a president, so he probably had a hand in passing many laws throughout the 50's and 60's...

I'm aware of how it all works, I meant that I never heard of a single cause he supported that he made progress on. Most of the presidents since then have had agendas of one kind or another, and have succeeded in getting Congress to pass laws.

God doesn't send anyone to Hell. People send themselves there when they reject Jesus.
It doesn't matter what you did everyone has sinned including myself.
One sin puts you in Hell. But you can be forgivin and never have to go there.
But to believe is all up to you and between God and yourself.

I have one major problem with the god and sins theory, you see I am an atheist, but in general a I am a good person, I would never kill, I am completely against capital punishment, nuclear weapons (though they do make very interesting engineering topics and a nice possibility in nuclear pulse propulsion) but yet you say I will go to hell because I do not have faith in Jesus or god (I gave Jesus a capital letter because he was very wise and as far as I am aware, real, though I doubt he would like how some modern christians are), but however, there is a problem, if god is omniscient, then he knows all that is and all that was, so he knows that I am going to be an atheist, that I will not believe in him, and will die and go to burn in hell for eternity, now, that means I don't have free will, which makes god a dispicable being little better than the hypothetical 'devil' in terms of monstrosity, can you really believe in a being like that? and if so, how?
