I think the cultural component is what they see. Christians see Jesus, Muslims see Muhammad (hopefully none try to draw him :? ), Buddhists see Buddha, and atheists supposedly quite often just see beings of light that they don't really have an identity for.

That tells us that, at a minimum, its part self-projection. What that self-projection is meshing with around the other side of the equation OTOH is the bigger question.

The machine records the experience on tape for playback by another person later in time.

Aren't we all familiar with the fact that we can have dreams when we are asleep? Aren't we also familiar with the fact that we tend to have more bizarre and vivid dreams when we are sick? Why is it a surprise that we might have extremely bizarre and vivid dreams when we are almost dead?

So basically you mean like some kind of dream recorder?

Has anyone here seen the movie "Brainstorm"?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085271/

Plot Summary for
Brainstorm (1983)

Brilliant researchers Lillian Reynolds and Michael Brace have developed a system of recording and playing back actual experiences of people. Once the capability of tapping into "higher brain functions" is added in, and you can literally jump into someone else's head and play back recordings of what he or she was thinking, feeling, seeing, etc., at the time of the recording, the applications for the project quickly spiral out of control. While Michael Brace uses the system to become close again to Karen Brace, his estranged wife who also works on the project, others start abusing it for intense sexual experiences and other logical but morally questionable purposes. The government tries to kick Michael and Lillian off the project once the vast military potential of the technology is discovered. It soon becomes obvious that the government is interested in more than just missile guidance systems. The lab starts producing mind torture recordings and other psychosis inducing material. When one of the researchers dies and tapes the experience of death, Michael is convinced that he must playback this tape to honor the memory of the researcher and to become enlightened. When another researcher dies during playback the tape is locked away and Michael has to fight against his former colleagues and the government lackeys that now run his lab in order to play back and confront the "scariest thing any of us will ever face" - death itself.

I wouldn't call it absolute proof but what I would ask is for people to give empirical, verifiable evidence that God exists. And also that other (possibly materialistic) explanations for the supposed evidence can be ruled out.

No one has been able to rule out that the so-called "near death experiences" are hallucinatory experiences created by the brain when all sensor input is cut off. In fact I would think that to be more likely than the experiences being "real", since it has been shown that there is still brain activity when they take place.

It would only be proof that consciouness is not bound to our living bodies. Or that consiousness extends for a time after we die. It would not be proof of a god.

This would at least be the starting point.

What if a death experience like this was recorded? What if several experiences like this could be recorded, showing it repeatable? Would that be "proof of God"?

If my grandmother had testicles, would that prove she is my grandfather?

What kind of useful conclusion can be drawn from a counterfactual supposition?

Even if some form appeared before us and said "I am god" that would still not be proof that there is a god.

True but if it was in fact a God you would still not believe in him.
