By that yardstick, we'd end up without a modern-day society.

Just you think of all the things that can kill people, or that can be used to kill or harm people.

I'm just wondering why you feel the need to defend porn that treats women so badly and encourages men to do the same
in real life, as they have done on numerous occasions

you must have a pretty low opinion of women

For a start, it helps me to keep my sex drive at bay and stops me from becoming too overeager with women. If I didn't have porn or some other kind of sexual outlet, I think I'd go nuts.

So you're incapable of having a w*k using your own imagination?

Have you ever thought, perhaps, that a lot of this kind of porn is actually very well thought-out, choreographed and with discussion and agreement with the models beforehand, who are willing (for more reasons than one) and being paid?

Look up the concept of 'pain slut'. These women exist in the BDSM community. Basically, they desire as much pain to be inflicted on them as possible. Men can be pain sluts too, at the hands of women. I've seen stuff that would, in a non-sexual context, be considered quite horrible, but the men love it. A lot of men want a woman to really dominate them and cause them great erotic pain.

It's not really my thing, though. Mild spanking might be, but the more severe stuff personally gives me the creeps.

I know a woman who likes sex to be as rough, violent and brutal as possible. She's made mincemeat out of many men who simply aren't up to the job - and these guys aren't shrinking violets either. I tend to stay away from her, 'cos I think she's mad. (I did wonder whether a genuine sjambok with metal hooks on the end and containing extremely hot chilli powder on the whip used at great force would phase her, though.)

No, not at all. It's rather dull having a w*k using your own imagination.

(Anyway, if I did use my own imagination, I'm certain you wouldn't approve.) ;)

Sounds to me like you know enough about it!

Done some thorough research have you?

it is horrible and shouldn't be made in my opinion

if people want to be this depraved they should be given some kind of therapy as they evidently need it!

OK.

I tried the serious approach (posting scientific evidence).
I tried the silly approach (a spoof on the card game Magic: The Gathering).

I guess I have no other option, then, but to drag myself to your level...

Your view of pornography in this thread is based on a multitude of ungrounded accusations based on purely anecdotal evidence. You lack even a rudimentary understanding of the concept of evidence, yet you throw accusations (people being sick, defending child sexual abuse, having a low opinion of women) left and right whenever people disagree with you.

Oh, and you have an almost *obsessive* need to launch personal attacks against people whenever you post...

In other words, you're an a**hole...

I feel sorry for you then

there's plenty of soft porn on normal TV these days anyway - you can't get away from it!

porn is becoming normalised and it will not be to society's benefit

one day it will impact on some of the people on this thread and I will be only too willing to remind them
they were the ones advocating it all!

There is very little soft porn on TV these days. In fact, TV has become even more puritanical than it was, say, ten years ago. Remember the days when Channel 5 used to show proper soft pornography?

Hardcore porn is still illegal to show on satellite TV in this country. I find this state of affairs unbelievably backward for a modern country in the 21st century. I'd abolish the 'R18' certificate and liberalise the porn laws, and allow porn to be sold in supermarkets (as long as the artwork is discreet) and in DVD stores.

I'm not massively keen on the U.S. commercial studio 'rough sex' type porn, but really have jumped the shark here. You've gone from talking about 'extreme' porn, to trying to suggest that as much porn as possible is called 'extreme' or 'violent', to finally making it clear that you have a problem with all pornography in general.

Just like the religious and social conservatives and the puritanical feminists.

No, we're advocating freedom and independence. The freedom to go about your business as long as you're not bothering anyone else.

I'm not interested in the morality of pornography, as long as no-one else is harmed by it.

Should we ban The Catcher in the Rye? Or Child's Play 3? Or anything that is innocuous that could end up acting as a trigger for a deeply disturbed individual?

(For what it's worth, I've actually read accounts of what it's like to be a male porn star and, believe me, it doesn't look like it's much fun at all.)

"I'm not interested in the morality of pornography, as long as no-one else is harmed by it."

But people are being harmed by it when people use it to fuel their fantasies and then enact them in real life

I do have a problem with porn in general but I'd only want the extreme stuff banned

extreme porn is hardly innocuous either

no one on WP is prepared to even admit to watching it!

I don't call that innocuous! lol

does anyone on here?

if not what's your problem with banning it?

You haven't given me one indication that all I said isn't true

you seem to not want to discuss your porn viewing habits at all

why is that?

is it an insult to ask someone what kind of porn they like to watch when they're defending extreme porn?

if extreme porn is so 'innocuous' why can't you tell us all about what you watch?

I'm pointing out the disparity between what you say and what you do

Perhaps because they aren't relevant.

You're attacking him and his character rather than actually dealing with his arguments.

How is asking what his porn viewing habits are attacking his character?

you're not implying watching porn is a bad thing are you?

I'm very confused :?

you said porn was innocuous, so....

we want to hear all about it, what he watches, what gets him off

come on, lets hear it - it's all completely harmless innocuous stuff after all :)

he seems curiously unable to extoll the benefits of all this extreme porn but
he wants to keep watching it

....and for no one to know he watches it

so yes, he wants to keep his dirty little secret just that - a secret

because when we examine how he feels about it in the cold light of day
- he's ashamed of watching it

Would you then ban a whole host of other things that could be considered innocuous by many?

You go silent when I mention this. A trigger could be literally anything.

Religion is one of the biggest possible triggers for fruitcakes.

Why stop there?

nessa238 wrote:

And what's "extreme", pray tell? Give us some examples?

Most of the stuff you're thinking of does not cause permanent harm to the participants, and in many cases the people on-screen are actually acting out their own fantasies. Just like the people watching the porn. They are, in a harmless way, trying to act out their own fantasies, to please themselves. A lot of these people wouldn't want to or aren't able to do the things acted out on-screen in real life, for a whole range of reasons.

Your argument goes along the same lines of banning guns because they can be used to shoot people. Or banning knives because they can be used to stab people.

I have an issue with pornography where the pornography directly harms those people involved in its production. Like genuine child pornography, or genuine rape porn (not rape fantasy, of which there is quite a bit that floats around), and so on.
