It is amazing how propaganda and a few well placed lies can make a man vote against his best interests.

IOW this election was ALL ABOUT sticking it to the standard national scapegoats [working class, uppity women, minorities especially the one in the white house]. the landslide numbers tell the tale. the people who committed this petty rashness will eventually find out they've been played.

Tragically, that great President is so underestimated and even vilified today.

I believe history already is taking pity on the man. but there is a disturbing undercurrent about his potentially being a player in the assassination of jfk. so I dunno.

I've heard that talk for years about LBJ's supposed involvement. I have yet to see or hear anything credible to support that. But I think without a doubt, Johnson had been led to believe by certain people in the intelligence community that if it were proven that Castro or the Russians had been involved (a false trail laid by the conspirators, by having Oswald go to the Cuban embassy in Mexico), there would be a nuclear war.

yeah, I think the MIC played LBJ for all he was worth. he finally met an adversary that bested him.

Yeah the ACA is great for the absolute poor; they get it free. Sucks for many though.

would you prefer the "absolute poor" just died?

Just dying may be my choice. BTW, free? I paid for my medical coverage. Okay, it was at a reduced rate but it was certainly NOT free! Also, if ACA is repealed, I will lose the only insurance I've had in over 15 years, and have to choose between existing in medical debt which is NOT living, or figuring out the best way to commit suicide. Before ACA in my state, if you were an adult without children you did not qualify for medicaid, no matter how poor you were. If the ACA goes I can see Medicaid reverting to it's previous status as well.

Yes, it is free to you if your income is low enough. Though, not "free" to the middle class who will be paying the bill in higher premiums and higher taxes.

"Fact one: Thanks to Obamacare? subsidies, several million people now have the opportunity to get private insurance at essentially no cost".

what the cons refuse to talk about, is the fact that before ACA, private health insurance mostly cost more than what most minimum wage earners' net income. they absolutely don't give a damn if the poor suffer and die as a result of being priced out of coverage, all they care about is their middle class complacency.

Has that changed? Now you're mandated to buy it too. Medicaid has been expanded sure but Medicaid isn't much better than no insurance at all and this has been backed up by multiple studies.

my patootie. I AM on Medicaid [Washington apple care] because I am below the state poverty level. otherwise no private insurance was available within my income. it is a LOT better than NO PRIMARY MEDICAL CARE AT ALL. sheesh.

As fire and police protection is paid out of property taxes and such that only comes from the middle and upper class, are the poor supposed to just suck it up if their homes catch on fire, or if they're the victims of crime? Obviously not, so what's so wrong with also extending healthcare to the needy even if they can't afford to be taxed for it?

I've actually read some of those Horatio Alger stories. They're not so much about "Rags-to-Riches" as they are about "Rags-to-Patronage" in that ...

Wikipedia wrote:
"Essentially, all of Alger's novels share the same theme: a young boy struggles through hard work to escape poverty. Critics, however, are quick to point out that it is not the hard work itself that rescues the boy from his fate, but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty, which brings him into contact with a wealthy elder gentleman, who takes the boy in as a ward. The boy might return a large sum of money that was lost or rescue someone from an overturned carriage, bringing the boy - and his plight - to the attention of some wealthy individual. It has been suggested that this reflects Alger's own patronizing attitude to the boys he tried to help.

(Source: Horatio Alger, Jr.)

May as well call them the "Dick Grayson to Robin" stories.

Personally, I believe that if you remove the literary Deus Ex Machina of the wealthy patron, you would have a story more like mine: a "Rags-to-Coveralls" story. There was no wealthy patron to bail me out of poverty. Instead, I took every reasonable job offer I received -- even the ones that I hated -- because I knew that waiting for someone to take pity on me and take me in under their care is as bogus as sitting on a stool in a drugstore and waiting for a Hollywood producer make you into his biggest star.

It may have happened to someone else (once), but it would never happen to me (ever).

Those "Horatio Alger" stories are just that. Stories. Works of fiction. Fantasy reading material for those who could afford them, and a means of income for the wealthy Horatio Alger, Jr.

I had to look them up because I kept hearing about them from liberals, I came to similar conclusions to Fnord. Seriously, a decade as a libertarian and I'd never heard the name Horatio Alger until liberals started throwing it at me. Same with Ayn Rand actually, never read her until liberals kept accusing me of being brainwashed by her, figured I should know what the fuss was about if people were going to keep making stupid assumptions.

I can't speak to your personal health or Medicaid in Washington but multiple studies have been done saying that Medicaid patients have the same or worse health outcomes than the non-insured. Expanding Medicaid is what it is, I think that's really digging for a silver lining in Obamacare when it largely failed in it's stated goals. There were other things that could of been done that would of been more helpful to poor people.

the standard GOP bunk [banning malpractice suits beyond actual tort] will do NOTHING to help the poor. enabling interstate insurance deals will do NOTHING. only direct gov't assistance will do that job, either in restraining insurance company abuses/gouging or cash assistance [together with a return to global rating] or some combo.
