If women did not have an opposition then they would not be making 70% of what men make for the same work nor would feminists even exist as they would have no cause to. You might want to inform yourself.

I think Jacoby was speaking with regard to present perspectives. The structural oppression your response pertains to is not a reflection of only present perspectives, but the perspectives which existed over the entire interval of time during which events which would precipitate said structures unfolded.

So you're kind of comparing apples and oranges, which leaves both of you feeling right and feeling that the other is wrong, when the truth is that you're both right.

I think the thing to take away from this is that, on the one hand, ceasing discrimination against women from some point-in-time T forward, doesn't in and of itself create a level playing field from T forward; and on the other hand, failing to understand the continuing-into-the-present-and-future impact of past gender inequality is not the same thing as opposing gender equality.

Men of today are the one's denying women equality and justice regardless or when the policies were put in place.

Listen to how stupid men make themselves sound to maintain their misogynous policies.

Men of today aren't a monolithic group, and speaking of them as such does nothing but exacerbate extant divides.

People in power will perform all sorts of verbal gymnastics to justify maintaining their power. I fail to see how this is inherently a gendered issue; rather it appears to me to take on an appearance of a gendered issue as a result of extant gendered (male-skewed) distributions of social power.

I'm all for leveling that imbalanced distribution, and I freely accede the necessity of re-balancing that distribution with respect to gender as a prerequisite of achieving the overall leveling. But focusing upon the re-balancing the gendered distribution of social power exclusively (that is, non-intersectional or even pre-intersectinal feminisms) does more harm than good.

Personally I could've been spared several years of flirting with MRM ideology, had anyone (say, me-from-the-future) sat down with past-me to explain "Listen, it's not only possible but to be expected for an able, female, upper-middle-class, well-educated, white, liberal-feminist to live a vastly more oppressive life than a severely disabled, poor, educationally-deprived, white male victim of state-sponsored torture. You see that intuitively, and that's why her words come across as bulls**t. But that doesn't mean they aren't built from a foundation of truth. You've got a lot of learning to do before this will make sense - good thing you love to read. So read and read and read away. Give everyone the benefit of doubt when they describe their own experiences; be mercilessly critical of any claim that one's own subjective experience invalidates the subjective experience of another."

It is a gendered issue because women are being oppressed by men and not by women.

It is men in power who are maintaining the status quo you seem to recognize has to change.

Which they shouldn't. Men and women don't want, on average, behave the same way, and it's a bad idea to force them to behave the same. If a specific man and a specific woman does behave the same, they should be treated the same (except in areas where sex is naturally relevant, such as child-bearing.)

False. Both men and women are oppressed by both men and women. What you mean (I think) is that only women are oppressed on the basis of their being women, while men are not oppressed on the basis of their being men.

That's true, but not even remotely equivalent to what you've said. Because if it's true that "women are not oppressed by other women" then my former acquaintance who was so severely beaten by her mother that she is confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life, was not a victim of her mother's oppression. And that conclusion is disgusting, repugnant bulls**t.

Unless you also contend that (a) these men in power seek to maintain the status-quo which grants them power specifically because they are male and (b) if the extant structures of power were identical to their current configuration in every respect save that they were populated by women of comparable upbringing and socio-economic standing, said women would assuredly not seek to maintain their status-quo, then I fail to see your point. It's still an issue of social power rather than being directly a gendered issue; the fact that social power is itself significantly determined on the basis of gender does not change this, nor does it mean that other variables determinant of social power can be ignored.

To claim otherwise is to say that Hillary Clinton is more oppressed than boys being electrocuted at the Judge Rotenberg Center.

Probably mostly because it's a hot topic right now on the internet, so they are following the herd and feel like voicing their opinions on what lots of others are talking about.

False, and a common misrepresentation of statistics by feminists. (I don't accuse you of that, you probably just heard it from them.)

It's unclear if there is any pay gap for the same work, factoring out all differences in profession, experience etc. (not really). But the ~70% figure is not in any way for the same work, it's simply an average across all jobs, before factoring out any differences. If a company could save 15% on the wages by employing only women, it would vastly out-compete its competitors.

Add this to the dangers list:
  • Governments, pressured by feminists, force companies to make equal the average salary of men and women, which may result in less pay for you. (And then the companies will try to hire more men, and the feminists will have more "proof" how discriminating and misogynist the companies are...)

My wife would disagree and the settlement the courts imposed was quite hansom.

Her case was one of many. Learn to google. There is a lot of good information out there from official sites.

I did. The figure is 81% in the US with the only factor considered being full-time-work, and 83% in the EU without considering any factor. Your figure is even more off than I thought.
Single, childless women in the US aged 22-30 earn 8% more than men (this statistic factors out differences in experience and flexibility due to child-bearing). Are you going to claim that this proves discrimination against men? I didn't think so.

Single cases of discrimination may exist, but they don't prove anything like the 70% figure, or even near. I'm curious what is used in a discrimination suit as evidence that the difference was a result of discrimination. I'm afraid that the same bogus statistics, without several possible real differences taken into account, but I may be wrong.

That any form of sex is rape even consensual the idea of just natural penetration by the means of procreation is also rape. What is the point of being a heterosexual male when all forms of sex is rape?

Perhaps. But if the world is lucky, many see the immorality of oppressing women and have finally decided to move the issue up on our social agendas just as moral people did with gay rights.

If you are moral then get on board.

The West has improved over time. No argument.

We still have a ways to go.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_Inequality_Index

http://www.iwpr.org/initiatives/the-wag ... egregation

Equality goes deeper than just money though. It is mind set and at present, religious mind set is firmly rooted in misogyny and that effects quality of life for women more than dollars in the bank. That last is assumption on my part as I do not think we can put a price tag on respect as human beings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kW8tSVsvZuo

Remember that the vast majority of people are religious and if religion, immoral views do not change then women will continue to be oppressed.

Thanks for this.

I agree. It is garbage to think that way. That would make all of us children of rapists.

Salvific religions have saddled us with enough un-deserved guilt with their lies.

We do not need any more from whatever source.

Yeah, so I didn't read the whole thread (tired of the same old arguments), but I'm going with relationship problems. Prove me wrong, guys. Who here is in a happy relationship with a woman, and has a proverbial stick up his @rse about feminism??

Gay. Also, most of the people I have ongoing non-sexual relationships with, at this point in my life, are feminists who like to rant to me about their menstrual cycles (because A: they know I'm not prissy and sensitive over "dirty subject matter" and B: they are determined to convince at least one male in the world of "just how rough the girls have it"). They're also NOT the kinds of feminists whom I mentioned above as being bothersome...they mostly just give me about three tirades a month, each, about "rape apologists," which is really the main thing that pisses serious feminists.

It's simple penis envy.
They're not happy with theirs, or their lack of one, so they think everybody else's must be better and better through cheating.

They clearly think everything in the whole world is an endless penis contest and that they're the losers.

It's very sad to see them so consumed by their insane hate.

Peopleism (humanism) is about fairness, feminism is about only voting for one team regardless... it's in the name. Until they change their name we can never expect them to be fair.

I see nothing wrong with feminism per se. It's healthy.

It's the feminists who believe every man is a potential rapist who bother me.

By the way: I'm a married man. My relationship isn't perfect--but it's been mutually beneficial.

I don't like the kind of "bull sessions" men have where they criticize women.
