Halloween costume PC rules: Good idea or[expletive removed]?
Hogan's Heroes was a funny show. From that same era this would REALLY offend people today
Thing is Jewish people wrote that in an effort to make fun of the people who did so much harm to them. Still offensive?
This is my kind of humor!

Closer to what we are all here for I would be a rich man if I collected a dollar for every post saying we should not use Aspie because it is ablelist against more severe autistics. The idea behind Aspie was to reappropreate the term Aspergers which the medical establishment looked upon negativly by making a cute version of the word. How that became offensive is beyond me. Same idea with high functioning. There are legitimate reasons not to use high functioning but bieng ableist is not one of them.
And here I always thought Aspie came about because people look at you strange if you tell them, "I have Ass Burgers" (which is apparently how most people unfamiliar with the syndrome hear the name). Because, you know, they don't already think we talk oddly enough...
I think you hit upon a very important point in your post that cuts to the core of this discussion thread: who is doing the talking (or dressing up at Halloween, as the case may be). For a member of a group with less social privilege to make fun of their ways, their oppression or their differences from mainstream is morally and ethically worlds apart from someone in the dominant group doing so.

Sigh. I realize this thread may just be someone trolling for a fight, but...41% of transgender people attempt suicide. Roughly the same percent of homeless children are LGBT. Not because of any mental illness of theirs. Rather it is because of the way people treat them for being different. Bullying, on the other hand, *is* a mental illness. Several really, depending on the actual causes. For some reason compassion is not valued much in some portions of our larger culture.
What you ironically call "PC" is really just another name for trying to stop bullying. You are claiming the right to treat others with cruelty even after being told it is causing harm to them, either directly or indirectly.
I don't know your reasons. For some it's based on an insecure assumption of racial or gender superiority, for others it's just because the person feels the need to make someone else feel bad, anyone else, to make themselves feel better (hence the, "we were just having fun"). Either way, it is ethically and morally wrong.
Children are accepting of transgender class- and playmates. It is their (typically, but not necessarily conservative Christian) parents or grandparents that teach them hatred and cruelty for those who are different. Halloween doesn't have to be a vehicle for adult insecurities and need to be cruel.
It's incredibly sad to see this sort of behavior on a forum dedicated to those who have themselves been treated so poorly for being "different". It wasn't so long ago that autistic people were normally treated the same way that people on this thread are treating those of other gender identities and races...
Dear sweet Jesus nobody is trolling for a fight, but of course you would see it that way. Its Halloween for f***s sake. Dressing up isn't theental illness nor is it bullying. Making a huge deal and needing therapy and whining over somebody else's Halloween costume is a mental illness though. You are making a mountain out of a molehill. You might want to dress up as " proportion" for Halloween because that is certainly an imaginary creature for you.
For real, get a clue and learn what is and isn't something to take serious and stop trying to lump everything in with actual serious and harmful discrimination and bullying. Its Halloween. Its a costume for fun. People need to stop whining over things that are harmless and also have no malicious intent.
Why am I not surprised to see one of these here?
You should take your own advice with regards to your deep butthurt over the rebel flag. It`s just a rag. Get off of it crybaby.
The people that the flag causes butthurt are the people who want to ban it.
OOM doesnt want to ban it and neither do I
You?
I'm saying she cries as much as the PC people do about things SHE DEEMS important. (like when the flag was taken down in SC).
To answer your question, I don't want the flag banned, but I don't want to see it displayed on public property either.

Yes the rebel flag argument isn't pertinent here.
There shouldn't really be any insignia displayed by a public office other than:
Stars and stripes
State flag
Badge/Insignia of office
Or equivalents of above
Such principles used to be well understood before the cold war.
It is really not a complicated thing to understand and nothing to do with banning people from displaying a flag which is still legal to do. It is not illegal to fly an ISIS flag.
Even though cops in New Jersey got a man to take down what they thought was an ISIS flag but actually wasn't however he could have used the First Amendment (even if it was an ISIS flag).
I think it's just use your own judgement.
The PC parade is bull lol. You can work out if someone might find it a funny costume or not and if you do offend someone it's not the end of the world, you'll learn lol.
We have bigger issues.

I've dressed as all sorts of things, though I do put effort into researching my costumes prior to wearing them so they'll be as authentic as possible. I've dressed as a Sioux, a male air force officer, medieval warrior, Gothic Lolita, etc. Halloween is the one night we get to be something that we're not, or for others it's the one night to truly be yourself.
If we're going to get so nit-picky about controlling what people wear, then no one can wear anything because every single culture has been influenced by other cultures.
It's like a bunch of people on Tumblr aruging that dressing up like the character Garnet from Steven Universe is blackface, even though Garnet is a stone. A garnet. Not black. It's getting insane how far these people will go. Soon people won't be able to dress up like Lapis because of some inane reasoning. And just because I have Irish heritage doesn't mean I was raised in an Irish culture, so if I were to dress Irish, I'm sure someone would find offense to that as well (although it seems perfectly fine to belittle and mock "white" cultures - if certain people even admit white people *have* cultures).
It boils down to, don't be a jerk. Be respectful. But please, do not try to segregate humanity to its own little corners of the world. If someone dressing up like an autistic person might help them understand us better, then good. If not, oh well, they probably will never understand us then.

It's like children. My kids were being noisy and I noticed like usual the younger was imitating everything the older said and did.
We as humans are an imitating species. It's in our blood, our instincts. It's inherent in many species as a way to learn. We can't condemn people for wanting to imitate. We can condemn people for being jerks full of hate.
Children imitate all sorts of things. Things that fascinate, things they love, people they look up to. If a child wants to dress up like a native American, then it should be used as an opportunity to teach, not condemn.

One year I wanted to go out as Joon from the movie Benny & Joon but I lived in the wrong area to be her because it was too cold outside and my costume wouldn't have kept me warm. I wonder if this would have been so offensive to people with mental illnesses and autism if I did go as her?
Or what if someone went as Sam, that might have been offensive to other aspies and people who have dyslexia and learning disabilities.
Or someone dresses up as Cal Hockley, that would be so offensive for women or someone goes out wearing a Titanic ship, that would be so offensive to the survivor families or someone goes out as Rain Man, that would be so offensive to the autistic people.
I find all this Halloween costume PC crap absurd.
But if someone went out as Hitler or as the KKK, that might be a different story. But if someone went out as Ted Bundy, people might not bat an eye for it. Someone might want to go out as a baddie that was real than fictional.

So you would not be offended if I went out as Suzanne Wright? As an autistic I would be in the oppressed group but as a straight male I would be in the dominant group appropriating transvestites or transsexuals. This PC stuff is complicated.

Just let kids be kids, fer crimony's sake! If parents feel they should monitor what costumes their kids are wearing for the sake of decency or respecting someone else' feelings, then they should do their jobs and be parents.

I don't think it should be displayed on a public property's flagpole but I have no issues with it being otherwise displayed on public property (e.g. a private citizen's rebel flag t-shirt, decal, hand held flag, patch, etc).

For clarity, the catilyn custome is for adult men, not for kids. The smallest size is waist 36.

Sorry, I automatically assume Halloween is something for kids, not adults.
In that case... well, adults can pretty well do anything they want, as long as it's not illegal. That said, if they dress as something racist, or something else offensive, well, as adults, they need to accept the consequential social criticism brought about by their choices.

I'm no fan of the PC patrol. Too many of them thrive on conflict at the expense of progress.
Having said that, they have a legit beef when it comes to dressing like racial stereotypes and LGBT caricatures.
However, I'm calling BS on the whole superhero/cowboy/disney princess thing.
Kids with CP are Superman fans. I didn't burn my comics when I acquired my spinal cord injury and Chris Evans doesn't leave crying children when he visits hospitals as Captain America.
I live just a few miles from Judge Parker's Court and Indian Country. Around here, most of the actual Native Americans wear stetsons, blue jeans and boots.
And, while parents might take a bit of heat for letting their daughters watch too many disney movies, I don't see a 4 year old dressed as the little mermaid offending anyone...
I think most of this is CULTURE WAR horses**t cooked up by the likes of Limbaugh and Beck to stir the rednecks up.
