We are bombarded with your media, laws and beliefs. We no longer are different from you, we are slowly becoming you. And the public doesn't like it.
I have a knowledge of americas stereotypes, schooling systems and power hungry politicians through television and films. When the presedential race was occuring it was front page news in our country. At the same time, our prime minister was making our ecomony fall apart with a proposal for a reduced VAT rate and to abolish parts of our NHS. This news was ignored because of americas news. People saw something wrong there, let me tell you.
We are also bombarded with images of severe racism originating from america, severe obesity and torture of suspected terrorists. I'm not saying I agree but it is changing the opinion quickly.
People are beginning to see britain as americas lapdog and people want britain to become independant again. Hate is spread through our infamous tabloids and people who have nothing better to do believe it.
America has its stereotypes about us, all because of a war that occured a long time ago between britain and your country. We watched a film recently, meant for children, which blatantly insulted the british in a song about the civil war. I was appalled. I don't walk around singing the simpsons to every american person I know, so why should this be shown to children for christs sake?
America has its good points and its bad. Same with britain. As much as I go on, I would still love to visit CERTAIN parts of america. I couldn't survive in alabama. I'd be chucked out of there with a shotgun in about five minutes, I reckon. Florida, hawaii (my dream holiday) perhaps alaska, and other areas would be good. I would find hollywood a laugh.

I think Britian and the US culture are very similar because our system of government is based on the British system of government. Most of the wealthy and influential people in US's past have had British ancestry. The two most significant things different about the British and USA is they drive on the opposite side of the road and we have better dental care.

I had no idea about this. Why do you think this is so?

Florida is just like everywhere else. I have never been to Alaska or Hawaii. The continental US is pretty much all the same though.

Cure yourselves of that and you really could be world changers.

1) Don't underestimate the other nations of the world.

2) Honour the indiginous peoples in the USA.

Pixel. Thank you for your post. I think you have some very good advice and some good insight. I think you are very correct about many Americans being greedy and materialistic. I fear the greedy of the top 10% of the nation may destroy us. I am not sure we can endure the financial problems they have passed onto us.

You also excluded the amount of military aid we give to countries like Sweden.

Sweden isn't a 3rd world nation, so including it is unnecessary given the nature of the original comment.

ASG,

I think you misunderstood. I didn't post the chart, a person from Sweden did. Their point was the US only gives about 2% of the GDP, and Sweden gives more. My point was that the US gives aid in military support which is not included in the chart.

I can't stand going to the UK. I hate having to go in Heathrow airport. That's about one of the few reasons I hate it, other than the snotty British people.

Now, the strange voyeur relationship the rest of the world has with the united states I'm not going to bother addressing. I'm not going to address the fact that based on my conversations on teh interwebz most people in most countries have some truly strange views of this country. No, I'm not going to point out that the UK doesn't have a clean record on the torture issue either. No, I'm going to ask: OBESITY? You're bothered that we're FAT?!? For Christ's f*****g sake people. Now, yes, America's packing on the pounds, but then again, with 33% population versus a normal of 23% in other countries like the UK. That makes us fat, but that don't give us nothing like the lead y'all have over say, the Japanese (who weigh in at around 3.2% obese). Now it should be further noted that obesity is highly correlated with other factors; for example, the fattest state in teh Union is...

drumroll...

please...

Missi-fucking-ssippi

In more civilized places, like New Jersey and California, the obesity rates are quite comparable to the rest of the Western World.

Word.

Funny how no one hardly ever brings this up as well as what happened in the Abu Ghraib event or the death toll of Palestinians being far more greater than the Israelites.

Bush and his counterparts have violated the Geneva Convention, it's like saying what Hitler did to the prisoners of war and "suspects" was Ok.

I also can't believe America gave Israel nuclear weapons. I don't see how they fair out any better than the Palestinians with what they've done lately.

Gee....probably because most the people here are Christian and think that it's a holy land.

This is what embarasses me about being an American.

The State of Israel never signed the convention so it is not bound by the convention. I might point out that the Palestinians do many more outrageous things in battle and in insurgent war than do the Israelis.

The Geneva Convention is just that, a convention and it is not universally binding on Mankind. It is an agreement of convenience among certain nations to keep the casualty count in wars down to a sustainable minimum. It is certainly not Holy Writ and it was not handed down to Man from a mountain top.

First: Israel signed the Geneva Conventions.

But even if Israel would be a not signatory power, it still would not mean that Israel could what it wants, because it is in International Law not that easy: A sovereign, mostly a state, has two sources of international obligations. One source are the treaties the state had made and formally accepted, the source are the "general rules of international law", the custom and acts of behaviour states apply and which is generally accepted between states.

A typical example is Advisory Opinion of the ICJ regarding the border wall build by Israel. The court applied the rules set-up by the 4th Hague Convention, so they do apply also to states which are signatory states:

Quote:
As regards international humanitarian law, the Court first recalls that Israel is not a party to the Fourth Hague Convention of 1907, to which the Hague Regulations are annexed. It considers, however, that the provisions of the Hague Regulations have become part of customary law, as is in fact recognized by all the participants in the proceedings before the Court. The Court also observes that, pursuant to Article 154 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, that Convention is supplementary to Sections II and III of the Hague Regulations. Section III of those Regulations, which concerns “Military authority over the territory of the hostile State”, is particularly pertinent in the present case.

http://www.icj-cij.org/docket/files/131/1677.pdf

---

Anyway: The statement that Israel is in breach of the convention, is not so clear as often made in the media. The Geneva Conventions, following the example of Hague Conventions, always had the proviso that necessary military actions can't be subject to the conventions if they are in relation to the harm done the civil population and every means is made to limit this harm. To decide this question it had been asked first, which means Israel may can use else to protect itself and which negative consequences those action would have for the civil population. Without detailed knowledge regarding the situation those questions can't be answered.
