Perhaps the question should be rephrased: Why is being gay right? Anyone want to give that a try?

Posing the question in that form puts us into a "guilty until proven innocent" situation. Why should gay people be forced to justify their existence to straight people when it's the straight people who are making an issue out of it and trying to permanently remove any chance at equal rights? I could just as easily ask "What makes you so sure being straight is better?". Lots of straight people are unable or unwilling to have children (and many gay people are both able and willing), so reproduction is off the table. Can you name a single thing other than making babies that straight people are better at than gay people?

First of all, I realize that there are a lot of gay or bisexual people on this board, and I don't want to be too offensive. I have known many gay people--my own father is gay. Many of the gay people that I have known are very sweet and friendly people. I can thank a gay teacher for my fluency in Spanish. I hate the derogatory names that have been used against gay people.

However, I do believe that homosexuality is a dysfunctional form of sexuality. As a born-again believer, I do not believe that homosexuality is a God-sanctioned sexuality for human beings. God's ideal is heterosexuality. I realize that for those who struggle with homosexuality, it is very difficult to overcome it. I don't believe that people are born with it; I believe that those who are homosexual are that way because of a complex interaction of personality, environmental, and social factors that influenced their sexuality. There have been people who have overcome homosexuality, although for many of these people, it remains a continuous struggle. I do not believe gay people should be thrown in jail for sodomy, however, I disagree with those who think that homosexuality is a functional form of sexuality and should be promoted. To me, being gay is not the same thing as being left-handed, African-American, Latino, or native American.

No offense, but what makes you think God prefers heterosexuality? Isn't God supposed to love everyone equally? Don't you think God would have created everyone to be heterosexual if it was really his 'ideal'? Also, gender only refers to body. How do we know the soul has a gender? If the soul doesn't have a gender, why should it matter what "gender" we fall in love with? Technically, more than 2 genders exist anyway. What are hermaphrodites supposed to do? Be asexual? Become priests?

I pretty much feel that anything consenting adults do is all right. I can't think of anything I wouldn't think was all right, if the parties involved all want it, and it doesn't hurt anyone who hasn't consented.

Right away I have to wonder if your opinion is purely religious or if there may be other feelings involved. Don't most people join radical religions as an act of rebellion against their parents?

There are a lot of sexual acts that do not result in pregnancy. They are all equally functional or equally dysfunctional. Do you believe that using a condom is a mortal sin?

There are two answers to this. (1) The Bible says that I am made in God's image. He therefore intended me to be the way I am. You have no right to judge. (2) Christians and Jews make up less than 34% of the world's population. Why should the other billions of non-Christians and non-Jews care what your fictional deity thinks?

I could just as well tell you to go heal your AS since a lot of people think it's caused by a complex interaction between genes and environment. Some people seem to overcome their AS, while for others it's a continuous struggle. For what it's worth, the whole "ex-gay" movement is generally considered to be nothing more than a propaganda device. The guy who founded the organization couldn't even cure his own son. I think it does a great disservice to both the gay men and to the innocent women and children they lie to when they go out "with the boys" on the weekend.

Well said, Jetson.

I personally feel that homosexuality cannot be overcome. It is innate. People who claim to be "cured" of homosexuality are either in denial or hiding their true feelings (perhaps both).

I tend to agree with CRB and disagree that you are born a homosexual. Many case studies bear this out if you research the data. I have had several homosexual friends (living in Atlanta, GA.) and a review of their histories show that somewhere along the way, they became gender confused. Many were seduced by an older homosexual. Please do not blow me off because your opinion differs. If you get to the history of most gay people's lives, there is an event or chronic situation that tends to warp the natural development of attration for the opposite sex.
Homosexuality is not truly evident in nature and is obviously not God's idea. (that should be a no-brainer)
Most people are not homesexual and find a certain revulsion to it, even though our politically correct brainwashed minds strive to be generous to all, (except those who aren't politically correct).
Having said this, I am not a gay-basher and do not tolerate any name calling or gay jokes. We are all God's creation and bear his image, no matter how tarnished, and should be treated respectfully.
Many gay people have made great contributions to our society and are wonderful people.

That's the point. God has already judged this matter in the Bible. I see that some have tried to tear apart the Bible to avoid this inescapable fact. Homosexuality is mentioned as something that God hates in both the old and new testaments. This is God's view on the subject. The arguments to try to ignore the old testament and assert that the apostle Paul was not accepted as an apostle won't stand up to the science of textual criticism.

Nature shows us what we are, what God designed us to be. Male and female. We were created with certain appendages and cavities for certain uses. I don't need to spell this out because I know that everyone here understands this. Animals or humans trying to mate or have sexual relations with the same sex are an abhorration. We must start from a logical standpoint and not let our orientation, religious beliefs, or personal feelings determine what the truth of the matter is. On any other topic, no one would start with their emotional reaction and try to get nature or science to back it up.

I will try to provide an example: My son believes there are aliens. I told him I believe in fairies. He said there were no fairies because that is just something people made up for stories. I said "ditto" on aliens. He asserted that many people have claimed to see aliens and their ships. I responded that many have claimed to have seen fairies and their magical realm. He thought that I was being absurd. My point is that just because people feel passionate about something, doesn't mean that we should throw objectivity out the window in favor or our personal belief systems. There is little to no proof that aliens or fairies exist; just alot of guesses and rationalizing.

This does not mean that homosexuals are "bad" people or inferior or should be tormented or recieve special rights. (The definition of marriage is a union between a man and a woman). I don't think that we can change definitions just to suit our preferences, either.

I probably won't post on this thread after this because I find it disappointing that a group of people who define themselves as "more logical" and reasonable that the "neuro-typical" population can ignore the obvious in favor of their feelings on this matter. It doesn't really matter how we feel about it. Observe nature, observe human anatomy.

Okay, here come the politically correct police.

(By the way, I would not stand by those raving evangelists that are obviously bigots. But just because you don't agree with someones "sexual orientation" doesn't make you a hate-filled bigot)

(Also, I am not homophobic, having had friends, co-workers, and a roommate who were gay and enjoyed them very much, and the feeling was reciprocated and yes, they knew exactly where I stood on the issue. They were much more accepting than most of the people on this thread)

Sexual Mysteries
Sexual Mysteries 2

The above links have a few articles from a conservative Christian's take on sex (including homosexuality.) I strongly recommend reading that site.

Primer for Seminarians
-Historical same-sex unions
-Gay-Supportive passages of Scripture
-How to be True to the Bible and say "Yes" to Same-Sex Unions

The above site, with a few pages I thought would add to this discussion, is very informative abought Christianity and sexuality, among other things.

Im gonna throw this out there and hope no one bites my hand off.....

backgound first.....
Im a straight female. I have had a few gay male friends. People accuse me of being gay because of my job, my demeaner (tomboyish) and my attire (casual), also because I never date....

That said, it sickens me to no end to see people being treated badly because of who they are. (yes WHO not what). I have been treated poorly on the mere assumption that I am gay. We all scream and yell, "equal rights" "dont descriminate" "love thy neighbor" but if a person lives differently than the majority, OH NO!! its a mortal sin!! !
why should a person that is homosexual be denied anyof the rights that you or I have as hetrosexuals? WHY?! Im talking BEYOND religion. Im talking treating other humans with respect and diginity.
My home town, GOD HELP US, has these nasty bill boards up that say "Are you gay and dont want to be?" and the contact information. I feel that those are wrong on so many levels. Like putting up a sign that says "are you black (white, asian, whatever) and dont want to be?" How can a person truly justify such biggotry?! Im not talking about people that are running around breaking the law, encouriging others to, or anything like that. Im talking about law abiding, concenting adults that deserve the same rights as the rest of us.
I'll eat my hat if you can justify the biggotry WITH OUT religious refrences or overtones.

its sad and pathetic that people can't look beyond how a person IS and see who they are. :!:

The sites that You have posted are wrong. they either add, subtract, or just something it is not in the end

You just have to read: Romans 1:24-27 hear is modern version of the Bible; 24 Therefore God, in keeping with the desires of their hearts, gave them up to uncleanness, that their bodies might be dishonored among them, 25 even those who exchange the truth of God for the lie and venerated and rendered sacred service to the creation rather than the One who created, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 That is why God gave them up to disgraceful sexual appetites, for both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; 27 and like wise even the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full recompense, which was due for their error. (of NWT)

I am not judging anybody again for their sexuality, but the Bible in these Scriptures truly show how God sees them in the end.

Man wrote the bible, old testaments, new testaments, etc. God did not. There is no proof that God actually told men to write this stuff. Men aren't perfect. They could throw their own ideas in there. Believing that god actually told men to write all that stuff, word for word, is like believing in Santa Claus.

yup. perfection is in the devine, not in the mortal soul. And it is only in he who is perfect that judgments can be made. Man is mortal and imperfect, God is Devine and perfect. Let it be he who judge, not man. that is if ya want to get all religious on it....

This is, however, what you are doing, Bland. Here is your emotional reaction (gut belief):

Bland wrote:
Animals or humans trying to mate or have sexual relations with the same sex are an abhorration.

And here, you try to get nature / science to back it up:

Bland wrote:
Nature shows us what we are, what God designed us to be. Male and female.

By your reasoning, being gay *is* normal: homosexuality also occurs in nature.

Bland wrote:
We were created with certain appendages and cavities for certain uses.

You can use this kind of vague referencing to any purpose: we were created with hands for certain uses (writing, picking things up, cooking, masturbation). We were created with mouths for certain purposes (eating, talking, oral sex). Who is to say all our body parts weren't intended to be multifunctional?

Bland wrote:

But there's plenty of proof homosexuals exist. I honestly don't see how this example furthers your argument. It seems tangential.

I have no problem whatsoever with your beliefs, Bland, but if you're going to argue that we should be logical and use reason only, observing nature, I feel compelled to point out that you have not done so yourself.
