It does make some sense, especially when you think in terms of tribes or small close knit communities. It's in their best interest to work together, and empathy comes in to play well there. The weaker/less socially acceptable have to learn how to please the leaders/bullies in order to survive. Many of our instincts boil down to surviving, it's just harder to understand in our present day arrangements.
