No, it's an entitlement.

Your legal residency in your state entitles you to lower tuition than out-of-state students. Because part of your tuition is taxpayer funded.

So getting grants, in-state tuition, so I can be sucessful on the same level as the usual welfare leeches who rather live on welfare than get off their asses and work??

I don't personally attack people on here who disagree with me nor do I try to belittle others. But I will put up strong arguments for my side but will try to listen to other side.

My def of an entitlement is giving money and things to people just for nothing.

College grants and student loans and in-state tuition isn't exactly on the same level because for one To keep gettimng fiancial aid I have to maintain a GPA of 2.0 of higher or I can kiss that goodbye. Plus student loans I have to pay unless I wanna default and really f**k my life.
Welfare OTOH gives money to those who don't wanna get out and work but yet can walk to the office to get food stamps. So people making min wage jobs supporting a child.
Well what did one expect when you drop out of high school becvause you decide to pop a baby out of you at 15 years old because you decided to be a pinhead.

The taxpayer support that public state colleges, fire protection, police protection, national defense, schools you have attended from K-12, roads you drive on, and all of the other nice social welfare amenities that close to everyone in the US enjoys are all services provided by the government that the majority of the country pays a small percentage of their income in taxes to enjoy.

Did you pay anything to go to school K-12? Chances are your parents paid a small amount if they owned a home and pay sales tax in the state you live in, but whatever your family paid was a drop in the bucket of the full subsidy you received from the government to obtain an education to even have the opportunity to go to college.

If you consider the taxpayer provided ability to go to a State College a handup in life, how is that different than the ability to obtain healthcare when one may require it to have any possibility to survive in life.

You wouldn't have roads to drive on to go to a grocery store if it wasn't for government social programs, so unless you grow and hunt your own subsistence, you couldn't survive here without the social programs that provide just the roads.

Roads, schools, security from lawlessness, protection from fire, defense from foreign attack, and healthcare when it is required to survive are all services you can't live without if you plan on surviving in life, in with the freedoms you now enjoy in the US.

If you are lucky enough to have enjoyed all these benefits your entire life, how could one possibly deny another the ability to obtain health care because of the non-sensical notion that it is part of some marxist philosophy.

If school is an entitlement, along with all the other entitlements you have enjoyed they are no less part of the marxist ideology you fear than the ability to go to the doctor for treatment for cancer if you are ever unfortunate enough to have the condition.

Get worried if the government starts providing 3 month paid vacations to all the citizens here, but health care reform is no more unreasonable an entitlement than the toilet paper you use on a rest area stop on the interstate; another government provided service customized for you. Of course, unless, you insist on bringing in your own supply, which I highly doubt is the case, because so many people take for granted everything in life that is provided by the government at taxpayer expense.

And again as discussed before in a previous discussion on the healthcare reform act, if you think your rights are abused because you don't want health insurance, and don't want to play nice with the rest of the country to ensure that you and your fellow citizens can have the ability to receive healthcare they may so desparately need, you can avoid paying the penalty for not purchasing health care, at no risk of criminal penalty.

The only action that can be taken against you is to deduct the penalty out of any taxrefund you have coming due. It's the law as written; look it up, if you don't believe it.

If you don't want healthcare, take your chances, but when the time comes for you or your family needs it, and can't afford it, you will understand better why it one of the most worthwhile entitlements that any government could provide their citizens.

If your grandfather was correct, all we have are fools in this country, perhaps except for the Amish; most everyone depends on government help to survive.

If not, prove they don't.

Funny is while I did went to public school I saw first hand how f****d up the school system in USA is (big reason why any future kids I have will be going to private school Even if I have to work 2 jobs to support their attending).

So no I don't want the same govt to take care of our health needs. I agree it sucks that some people can't health insurance, I am poor college student is among them. But at the same time, I think with the way govt does in f*****g things up, I'd rather be force-fed poison than let the feds decide my health care need.
Besides I doubt people in this country seriously give a damn about ones health. If they did, they wouldn't be shoving twinkees down thier throats or pigging out at Mcdonalds, or smoke like a chimney knowing that one day it will come back to bite them.
So you want to pay a 2,000 tax, that is fine, but I DON'T.

If you are a poor student the most you will do is receive free medicaid that might save your life. You won't have to pay anything. Even if you have some income above the minimum required to receive medicaid, you will pay little to nothing for a health care subsidy. Of course if you hate the idea of government support you can refuse to accept the medicaid or the roads you need to drive on to go to the grocery store.

I can promise you one thing above all else; if you ever have a sick child you won't refuse the medicaid for your child. Ever watch a child suffer in pain, it's no fun, and if you could magically wish away the health care reform act all on your own because you think it is a socialist policy, that would be the fate you would bring others.

Fortunately neither you nor anyone else that is not considering the cruel realities of life and the real contigencies involved in people's pain and suffering that don't have health care can't do anything to erase it at this point other than to pray that the supreme court rejects it. It sucks that people don't have health care won't mean anything if you ever have a child that needs it.

Believe me I know what I am talking about; I watched my child suffer for 51 days in a hospital; without health care he would have never got the care he got, unless I had 300K in pocket change.

If I couldn't pay for the care myself, do you seriously think I would have refused government subsidied insurance, because I was too proud? Anybody that would refuse it would be more cruel than I can imagine.

Try to imagine yourself in those shoes if you can, because if you ever plan on having children and working two jobs, without the healthcare reform act, you won't be able to afford healthcare unless your job affords it for you, and there is absolutely no guarantee it will or that you will have any control over whether or not it does.

So what's the answer if you have a sick child that desparately needs health care for a chronic condition, and you still haven't got a job that affords you the ability to provide the health care for the child? If the government wants to give you free medicaid services are you going to refuse it because of your fear of socialism? If you say no, chances are you just can't imagine it happening to you, and if you say yes, it's really not fair to hope that someone else wouldn't have the same opportunity. Its' more than "it sucks not to have health care", when it is your child that needs it.

Social security is considered an entitlement, but the truth is that FICA line item on your pay stub (you do have a job?) is you paying into the fun that will pay you.

Unemployment insurance works the same way, but it comes off your employer's bottom line. The value you create for your employer makes it possible for them to make the insurance payment on your behalf.



I have a sister on welfare. She has medical and psychological problems that prevent her from being able to hold down a job.

I propose that i am more bootstrappy than you. I have not attended a taxpayer funded school since the 8th grade. My parents put me through private school on a humanities professor's salary.

And now i have a job where i help keep american soldiers safe.

That is different. My bro is severely autistic and is on social security. I'm talking the ones who can work but don't want to. I have a cousin who is like that. She a high school dropout with 3 kids working a min wage job compalins how unfair life is when she could go and take free G.E.D Classes at the local community college as wel as get scholarships at the same college if she obtains it and wish to futher her education.
Those are the ones I'm talknig about.

Medicad is nothing more but a handout and bad one at that. As far as having a "sick child" I don't have to worry about it because unlike many people who have the common sense of a sack of hammers, I'm choosing to finish college before I have a kid which I hope to beable to get health insurance for him/her once I have a good career.
When I worjked at Publix I was able to get a good health insurance plan but hey that is one of the reasons why it was good place to work. Didn't need the govt to make the campies insure their employees.

My husband and I are college grads. We had good jobs. The we had kids. I chose to stay home with them when they were born, but that was fine, my husband had a good job and our financials were in check. Then, just like that, my husband was laid off. This was a few months after the banks collapsed and Wall Street tanked. We went about 4 months with no work at all and about 9 months severely underemployed. We ate through our savings and lost our house. We moved out of state because it was the only job offer we could get. 6 months later, still in the depths of the recession, he lost that job too - store closed.

Thankfully now, we both have jobs, but for a while there it was really quite terrifying. Our kids went uninsured for a while, but when we finally qualified for state subsidized child healthcare - you bet you're a** we took it. We still don't have insurance but will soon - the waiting period with his new company isn't too bad. My job does not offer any benefits.

My point is, bad things can happen to anyone, even if you've been playing by the rules. There are no guarantees. Job security is pretty much non-existent these days. So don't be so foolish as to think that you don't have to worry about that.
