Is rape really as common as the media would have us believe?

Female privilege no doubt is the millions of women who will be sleeping in refuges with their children to escape their partners who have been violent towards them and their children, and the millions of women who work at strip clubs or live in brothels because they have nowhere else to go.

Lets be a little bit fair - successful criminals learn how to identify their victims at a distance. There are probably women who have unfortunate flirting habits, but there are probably a lot more women who's body language indicates that they are easily taken advantage of.
Now this one is not true. Any woman can be raped, whether she is an assertive person or not. You just have to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

You could say the privilege is that they have refuges at all. Only recently have male DV shelters started to pop up in greater abundance. I've read studies suggesting that women-on-man DV is alot more common than most think (40% of all reported DV incidents if I recall correctly). Not only that men are far far less likely to call the police on their partner.

OK got me there, but in fairness men don't really have the option to sell themselves for food and shelter like that, there just isn't the demand.

As far against DV against males goes, I thought that it was far more likely to be emotional violence against the male partner than physical. Males are bigger so unless you have a wife bigger than you, how can she be physically intimidating? A lot of the reason why women need refuges is that the males actually are bigger and stronger and threaten to kill them, they sometimes can beat them to death if they dont get out.
As for brothels, in a way it is just as well they are there as women who are homeless are subject to rape, the streets are not safe for them. Though living in a brothel is a poor alternative to being homeless. It is hardly a pleasant lifestyle. Rather soul destroying I would think.

Nope it's mostly physical, you are forgetting that most men will take quite a severe beating before even considering hitting a woman back.

I think the shelters should and do exist mainly to escape the violence itself, not solely to avoid the possibility of being killed which happens in a relatively small number of DV cases. It's true men kill their female partners more often, but that's not because they are bigger and stronger. Most households are filled with objects that can be used with lethal intent, so I imagine it's part of the male psyche that makes them more likely to kill in these scenarios. Still given the small number of DV cases that ever end in death, it's no reason to discriminate against male victims.

No arguments here.

I dont think that is true. I have no doubt that there are many very vicious women out there, but I dont think that on average they do as much physical damage which ends up requiring hospitalisation, as male partners are capable of doing to women (unless the woman is a real psycho). I think it is easier when you are bigger to escape any violent attack against you. It is also easier to leave someone when they are less capable of killing you. Nonetheless domestic violence towards males is a big problem, I agree, but it is not as extreme as some of the domestic violence against females I have seen documented.
Males have a financial advantage, especially if they are working to support the family, a woman ends up homeless and penniless if she has small children and has to escape an abusive home, and she will not feel in the position to ask for alimony and child support from someone who is threatening to kill her.

Um, it's not just that men will take it. It's also the fact that women are more likely than men to use a weapon, so physical abuse is actually not about strength. Take a look at these videos:

@LKL, I believe the first video provides some statistics in the UK at least.

My understanding about the statistics of domestic violence is that women commit both physical and psychological violence on their partners only slightly less than men do, if one takes into account under-reporting; however, women generally do less physical damage because they're less able to cause damage unless they use a weapon. Men are also more likely than women to be attacked (ie, mugged, beaten) by other men.
However, the statistics on the rates of rape are NOT at all comparable, and it was those claims from Lilypad that I was contradicting.

Hell, 26 years after I was raped by one of my brother's friend I dared to mention it in front of my Mom, only because I wanted my brother to know so he could protect his own daughter now that the guy in question had moved back into town.
And my mother called me a liar.
My brother too me quite seriously though. Really, what reason would I have to make up a story like that 26 years later, when I'm more than grown up and have been living 800 miles away for years? sheesh
My best friend is in her mid-60s. She was raped 3 times. Two of them by a family friend, in her own house, when her parents were there, starting when she was 6 years old. Her parents' reaction? They punished her for lying, of course.
Sometimes it isn't even about reporting to the police. If it's going to get you even more grief from your own family, you shut up. Even now, yeah, this happens. I've had to counsel girls in that sort of situation.

As for false accusations. Unfortunately it does happen. Women who make such horrible accusations seem to fall into two categories and I think it's generally easier to spot these girls than it is to spot a rapist. The teen aged girl who doesn't want to get in trouble with her parents, and the low class player "skank" who didn't get her way.
And women who have actually been raped have some pretty violent responses for those false accusers. It makes it that much harder to prevent the real deal and get actual rapists off the streets. The false accusers endanger us all.
Oh and as for the media and reports of rape: Men get raped too.
Good luck trying to report being raped, if you're a guy. It's not pretty.

I will explain to you why this hideous and life-destroying crimes are being tolerated by many individuals and certain societies. and I will also actively participate on this particular forum because this is one of the issues that I am passionate about.
People think you are lying because they do not want to face something uncomfortable and disturbing. This is something I have observed about certain societies and individuals. People want to see what they are used to. When faced with brutal reality of what is really going on and who are currently being sexually victimised, it distorts the perfect vision of reality they have therefore it puts them at extreme unease.
It just makes it that much easier to snub off someone a LIAR instead of trying to deal with the aftermath of rape. and As most rape victims would agree, Rape deserve a death penalty or life imprisonment for destroying some innocent women’s lives.
These are type of people who do not want to face the truth because they rather exist in sugar-coated false reality and hear the half-truth.
It’s worse when especially their sons get accused of rape. they think their sons should be forgiven and be exempt from this harsh punishment. it’s time women and mothers start educating their sons about healthy sexual behaviours in order to prevent the sexual exploitation in the society period. it would just save so much hassle in all of us.
Well, not nearly as common as 1 in 4 like feminists claim. I would say most women have had some kind of unwanted advance at some point but nothing close to full on rape. Though in South Africa, it might be that high.
I would say it's sadly, pretty common though. Maybe like, 3% of women have been full on raped and about 12% molested to some degree or another? It's probably not that much less common than physical abuse.

Just look at the statistics. Either there's 10 times the amount of rape today since 1960, or the definition must have changed, for better or worse.
Or maybe more rape cases are reported now than in 1960 because chances are women are more informed and open about it.Just look at the statistics. Either there's 10 times the amount of rape today since 1960, or the definition must have changed, for better or worse.
Exactly. That's why here in Portland, Oregon, and in Canada, the rape rate is reportedly high. Feminism is a huge force here. Ironically, places with seemingly high rape rates seem to be more concerned about women, because more cases simply come to light. Rape stats, just like religious stats, are generally extremely unreliable.

One in four is the average. Some women have been raped more than once, and that increases the average for everyone.
