Ah, my apologies. I sometimes fail to take the religious threads too seriously, because I have been watching them for a few months now and have had very few occasions where I thought people were being truly honest about their personal religious beliefs. This would include me. I appreciate the fact you are serious about your question. So, I will give my take on it.
The only person in this thread who I feel has tried to give you an honest answer to your question is ouinon, when they stated the belief in God satisfies a need; though that need was not directly identified. I am sure there are many needs that belief in God can satisfy, but I think the most fundamental need is the need for absolution. There are certain sins a person can commit that are impossible to be forgiven by anyone or anything here in this world. There are certain sins a person can commit that are impossible for a person to forgive themselves. There are certain sins a person can commit that are impossible for a person to fully regret. These are the types of sins that can destroy a person, turn them into nothing. These are the types of sin which a person can only find forgiveness in God.
There are people who would pick apart the Bible, reveal it flaws and toss the whole thing for being flawed. However, there is a great bit of truth about mankind in the Bible. I think the most fundamental truth is, man is inherently sinful. Some more than others, but all sinners none the less. People need to believe in God because people have a basic need for absolution.
