AspieOtaku, I think that you will be glad to hear that none of us believe in a bearded man in the sky. This is exactly what I mean when I say the atheist typically has a childish concept of God. If, for you, God is analogous to a flying spaghetti monster, a flying tea pot, a leprechaun, Santa Claus, a bearded man in the sky, a unicorn, or if you define God as the god of the gaps, then you are actually discussing something different from what we are. God, if it exists, is something beyond the scope of our ability to have full comprehension and God is actually quite alien. You are thinking of God a physical entity within the universe. As I say, God is a theory. Given the raw datum of the experience of Being, it is perfectly reasonable to posit the concept of a Creator as an inference to the best explanation.

With regard to your continual spouting of drivel concerning the nature of science... Your entire spiel is made null by the fact that I, along with the other intelligent theists in this thread, do* accept science and reason. In fact, we use both to increase our confidence or trust (faith) in God. This is the last time I will say this, because, frankly, it is not worth my time to continue to repeat myself in correcting your trolling. Science is a methodology that allows one to investigate phenomenon and tease out descriptions of reality. These descriptions are then used to make predictions and continue the advancement of the descriptions at a deeper level. In other words, even if the entire universe were explained down to the point at which you could describe and predict everything, that would still do nothing to show that God doesn't exist. This is the nature of what the God hypothesis is. God is a meta theory. Just because you can explain what is going on, doesn't mean you can explain how and why. And if you want to say "Well then God isn't clearly defined... so you don't even know what it is... so why do you believe in it?".... then explain to me what Time is... and Energy... and go ahead and tell me what consciousness is. I will just say that you need to continue your education, and maybe one day you will be smart enough to figure out how much you don't know... and just how mysterious the cosmos is... maybe, through a eureka moment of intuition, you will catch a glimpse of the big picture... and maybe along the way you will gain the maturity required to cultivate some wisdom. Currently, you offer among the very weakest objections to the existence of God anyone has posted in this thread. You represent that group of atheists who wallow in ignorance and misunderstanding. I find that ironic, given that the atheist typically accuses the theist of being closed-minded and uneducated. The shoe is entirely on the other foot. The outside sources you have posted from are not respectable in the least. I saw another thread you posted the other day with some total jerk heckling a group of people about their religion. The video was titled something like "atheist owns theists"... I watched it, and all I saw was some guy being a pompous ass to a group of people, because he "knows" he is right... therefore, he had the 'right' to constantly interrupt them and generally talk down to them. This type of behavior is disgusting. You are not the "brights." In fact... s**t like that makes you look rather dim.

You claim that you 'majored' in astronomy and yet you cannot solved simple Lemaitre - Friedmann metrics. It makes your so called 'credentials' a truly dubious prospect indeed.

Math was never my strong points only physical science, i just know that the origin of the galaxy didnt come from a bearded man, if thats what your teaching your students i feel bad for them.

Then you have not majored in astronomy, even though you said otherwise.
I took a course in Astronomy i never wanted to earn a degree in Astronomy since it requires a major in math which your an expert at and i am not. You still lacking in being superior and perfect though. Oh you fail to see how i can read your patterns and see through your tactics. How easily angry you are at me and how much you hate me in multiple attempts to be little me and insult me. Im not sending personal attacks. However i am mocking every attempt you make to make me mad and it seems to make you mad. If you dont want to get mad dont try to get me mad for no reason, i dont hold a grudge against you but you seem to hold one against me and it shows.

Then stop lying when you claim that you majored in astronomy.

Not to mention that the world leading expert in cosmology/astrophysics is George Ellis, who is an active Quaker. But according to Otaku, he believes in talking snakes and a bearded man in the sky.

I don't have faith in the existence of God.

I can't exactly absolutely refute the existence of God.

It's all a matter of "faith," really. Arguments pertaining to the absolutely existence of deities, versus the absolute nonexistence of deities, don't go very far, usually. They usually end in accusations and in useless battles.

I'm not really hip on my theoretical physics, I must admit.

I do wish, though, that we could actually travel to these black holes and other regions of space beyond the Solar System, so that it can be proven that the laws of physics which applies HERE applies THERE as well.

I don't see any proof for the EXISTENCE , nor the NONEXISTENCE of some "superior force" "creating" the universe or universes, or multiverses, or whatever.

I just go by my faith in my atheism; though I do wish there was some sort of "heaven" waiting for me when I expire.

What you just said is a very reasonable and respectable position to take. This is what it sounds like when an atheist has the wisdom to understand that no one can have certainty and that everything is on balance... sooner or later the scales will tip one way or the other in your thinking and you will think there either probably* is no God.. or there probably* is a God. No one knows for sure.... and anyone who does claim to know with certainty is foolish. We should all strive to keep an open mind, while also maintaining a healthy diet of skepticism. So long as one side is not proclaiming the other to be intellectually deficient or inferior, theists and atheists should be able to get along. I am not one who thinks that everyone must* believe. My project is to show that theism is reasonable in a paradigm when people are becoming increasingly confused by the false dichotomy that is prevalent between science and God... or reason and faith. I believe the cosmos is a strange and mysterious place... and there is certainly more going on than meets the eye. Kant would say God is in the realm of the Noumenon, while all we have access to is the realm of Phenomenon.

Indeed,

We have limited access to phenomena which, frequently, is quite distant to where we, on Earth, stand.

I've studied some astronomy....and have found that conceptions relating to planets before they were actually explored were almost always refuted (or at least modified) once the planet was actually explored (to some degree).

It would be quite the miracle, frankly, if we were able to discover the full nature of any superior force or sentient deity who deigned to create (or created without any forethought) this present-day Universe.

We really need much more input than we have now. We, who are based in Earth, and never ventured beyond the Moon.

I don't believe there is a way to fully refute faith-based beliefs of any sort.

Discussions of this sort should take into account that notion, which I see as being fact.

I'll have to look at the video later.

But what Mr. Watts says about people complementing each other is quite on the mark.

We are not only dependent on ourselves, no matter what.

Shakespeare did not create his plays out of thin air. He had influences, and he adapted others' works.

While we have never ventured beyond the moon we have seen galaxies as they were some billions of years ago. The Hubble Deep Field is a treasure trove of images of places we shall never be able to go.

It is quite interesting that you would say that, because in the philosophy of science, it has been speculated that the historical reasons science arose in the west is precisely because in the east, the concept of Tao as unknowable led to intellectual malaise of sorts when it came to seeking explanations and order in the universe. Science arose in the west, because of the enlightenment, which was born out of the renaissance, where christian, hermetic, jewish, and islamic theologians at the academy working to understand the universe and the mind of God rediscovered and revitalized Greek literature/culture where they used science and reason to arrive at rational conclusions about the metaphysics of reality. In other words, man became scientific because he expected law in nature, because he believed in a law giver. It is a modern myth that science and God are in any way opposed.

Nonsense. Western science also views ultimate truth as unknowable. Science doesn't discover truth, it builds models. And frankly, it doesn't matter one way or another. Islam isn't superior to Taoism just because that culture discovered various mathematical principles. Read "Guns, Germs and Steel" if you want to find out why Europe developed faster than other places in the world. Science and God are in fact opposed. God is a faith position based on no evidence whatsoever. Science is a method of gaining evidence based knowledge.

Case closed!

I have to disagree with you there. One can conceive of a god that only cares about one species. In fact, one can conceive of gods with any number of characteristics. If god is a Cubano sandwich, I met him this morning, and He was delicious.

Well drop the absolute, it's not used very often in science. Almost nothing is known absolutely, but many things are provisionally known. If there is no evidence for the existence of god, or anything else supernatural, the default position is that only naturalistic things exist. Naturalism doesn't have to prove itself. Supernaturalism has everything to prove.

Also, heaven sounds awful. When I die I want real non-existence. I don't want to be tortured for all eternity by the presence of human souls. I think many autistic people could relate to that.

Before I respond to anything else, show me what science are you referring to exactly?

Don't go off on a tangent. It does no one any harm, why is it against religious law? And somehow, God includes rules on how to go about being a slave owner, which clearly oppresses human beings, treating them as property. Don't even get me started about why God doesn't seem so concerned about rape, but he's very concerned about foreskins.

What thread? you mean this one? viewtopic.php?t=312516 You do realize hes heckling a hate group not some innocent religious group, they believe god hates the white people and that he is the spawn of satan, that blacks, hispanics and Native Americans are the true Jews and 12 tribes of Israel, so you backing a hate group that shouts racial slurs at people passing by? They are actually a cult! Heres another vid on how oh so innocent they are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNT4Cznh6Is Viewer discretion is adviced racial slurs and cursing. So according to the bible white people are the cancer of the earth and all are edomites! Nice, glad to see you support this idea. So he may come off as an athiest troll but is smart as hell and trolling trolls for the right reasons! I subscribed to his channel, you mad bro? I dont agree with racism against anyone, religion does not justify that but you seem to back these racists who use religion to justify racism! More reason to stay an athiest then! I shall learn his ways and do some heckling myself and own religious racist people! Your backing up a hate group under close watch by the FBI not smart imo but since you think all white people and Asians are evil and god hates them then thats your choice!Since you got owned showing you support a racist hate group as oposed to an athiest that happened to heckle them and own them you lost round one my friend, prepare for round two! 3...2...1 lets go!
