Firstly, the fact that I disagree with you does not mean I "obviously do not understand". That statement is dismissive and arrogant.

As to the matter of questioning God's "absolute authority", I disagree. If I ask my neighbor why he painted his house purple, it doesn't mean that I question his authority to do so. Similarly, asking God why he made the sky blue (or whatever the question) doesn't mean I don't think he had the right.

Regarding a "lack of faith", I'm not sure what you mean. A lack of faith that God exists? As I am hypothetically having dinner with him, that can't be the case. Further, the fact that I am asking Him why he does things implies that I have faith He does them. So if I believe He's God and does the things He claims to, what is that in which I do not have faith? Perhaps a lack of faith that his motives are for good? That could be true, but it would depend on the question being asked. Certainly not every question that started with "why" would fall into that category.

As to a human's ability/inability to comprehend God's answers, I don't see how that matters. I can think of questions I'd enjoy asking Stephen Hawking or Albert Einstein, even though I probably wouldn't understand the answers. Besides, if He turns out to be the Christian God then I'm sure he'll have a nice parable ready to help me out. Something involving fish or a vineyard, most likely.

It does not at all indicate I am dismissive or arrogant. It merely means you do not understand. Your reply indicated that.If God exists, and having dinner with some odd creature who can pull rabbits out of hats or even revive the dead is in no way convincing this thing is God, whatever it claims. But if it is God then any questioning of His acts means you are demanding reasons. It is the type of exchange one would make of a scientist, but surely not God whose decisions are not to be questioned. To question them is to demand reasons and reason and God do not mix. Haven't you noticed how many unreasonable things religious people perform all the time? Praying and praising God and the Jews do most peculiar things with a block of wood and a ribbon. These are not acts of reason, they are acts of faith and reason that questions them indicate a lack of faith. God may be a He but it is not a he. To be a he, you must have a she. And the he must do things with the she to produce little hes and shes. That's what the word means. As far as I know there are no little gods running around. The Christian God might just as well blast you with a bolt of lightning or whirl you away in a wind. Or it may treat you the way it treated Job for a good joke. Not nice.

The question why demands motives. One does not question God's motives.

From a linguistic point of view, there are many words in English that stand sufficiently alone as an answer to a query. There are yes, no, maybe, interesting, great, awful, and a host of others. "Because" is not in that category since it is merely the first word of an uncompleted explanation. In a stand-alone use it becomes synonymous with "Harrumph!", "Shaddup", "Don't know and won't admit it", "Don't bother me." and a few others. If emitted by a teacher it teaches something about the teacher, not the subject in question.

You were not there. Thank God. No, you would not have liked my teaching style. You would have joined the student who complained I did not use he/she, the student who complained that in a Linguistics course I talked about grammar, the student who resented that neither I nor my first language Arabic speaking assistant would tell him how to go straight to the right page of an Arabic dictionary, and espdecially the student who glared resentfully at me from the first to the final day of the semester.

For the record - though it has already been stated, I cannot expect you either to read or to try to understand anything you did not write - it was not so synonymour.

Yes, it says something about the teacher. And obstinate voluntary incomprehension says a lot about the student, or in this case the reader.

I would not presume to tell you what you might have done in a fantasy situation. It seems you have a tight finger on all of my assumed actions, something even a psychoanalyst would be very cautious to propose. Rather peculiar statement.

Takataka.

Apart from all else, linguistically naive - anybody who has taken Ling 101 should know that "gender" based concord systems say nothing about gender, since all nouns must be placed in one of 2 to - I think about 20 is the maximum I have encountered - categories.

Maybe YOU assume that anyone who asks you a question is judging you - that would explain a lot. Some of us, though, ask questions seeking information. "Why do you use your hand on the dishes instead of a brush, Father?" is a question, not a criticism. He answered it, too, and after some years I came to see what he meant.

I'm terribly sorry that the expertise you gained with language where the gender of a noun in language has nothing to do with sex. If you carry that cuckoo concept into the nature of beings your sense of intellectual direction is totally frazzled.

Since we are conversing in English which has no gender designation for nouns (and Finnish has none either and doesn't even have the word equivalent for "he" or "she") I wonder why you demand gender for all linguistic nouns.

On the other hand the thought does occur to me that if God is a mere linguistic construction there may be something in it but I am unsure what.

Good heavens. All Hanrahan has to do is post in a thread, and suddenly all polite and rational discourse runs screaming out the door, never to return. Used to be he had to keep posting, stirring things up, to get that effect. Now his mere presence is enough to start making others act like him.

Sand,
How do you know the religious acts of others are unreasonable?
You don't know that God (if he/He/She/she/It/it/They/they exist(s)) doesn't have reasons for asking that such rites be performed.
If one had the opportunity to ask God why, on the other hand....

The crazy things that religious people do - like persecuting homosexuals, like not eating shellfish, like depriving women of basic human decent treatment - these are totally illogical and can not be assumed reasonable. But they are done out of conformity to what people believe are God's commands.

To ask why of an all powerful being displays a distrust in the being's judgment and requires justification. The principle of faith is to accept unquestioningly all God's decisions whether or not they make sense within human understanding. The question "why" expresses a need to understand motivation before total acceptance. This is not compatible with faith.

The basic conflict between scientific enquiry and religion is that science does not assume motivation in nature. And it has yet to observe it. A God in charge indicates all events in the universe are the result of motivation. Theology and teleology cannot be divorced.

His answer to your question would be found at Genesis 1:26 and Revelation 4:11.

(Genesis 1:26) And God went on to say: “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and the domestic animals and all the earth and every moving animal that is moving upon the earth.”

(Revelation 4:11) “You are worthy, Jehovah, even our God, to receive the glory and the honor and the power, because you created all things, and because of your will they existed and were created.”

His answer is found in Jeremiah 7:30-31. The point is in bold.

"For the sons of Judah have done what is bad in my eyes,’ is the utterance of Jehovah. ‘They have set their disgusting things in the house upon which my name has been called, in order to defile it. And they have built the high places of To′pheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hin′nom, in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.

Which clearly indicates and justifies all human brutality towards all other creatures since humanity is the prime reason for the creation of the universe. That is one among many objections many sensitive people find religion such a disgraceful activity.

I want to ask these two questions also...

But the first question I want to ask is too deep, too high...

I cannot even find words to describe it.

I will just listen. Listen to anything the Lord said.

And meditating. To the deepest point that I have ever reach. I would not imagine that I can reach there, it will be a ridiculous pride.

But just meditating..

(2 Timothy 3:16, 17) All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.

(Romans 15:4) For all the things that were written aforetime were written for our instruction, that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope.

He would ask you to turn to John 17:3 and then read the rest of the book he wrote. That's how you can listen and meditate on His words. :)

He would respond with Ecclesiastes 8:9 and Jeremiah 10:23.

(Ecclesiastes 8:9) man has dominated man to his injury.
(Jeremiah 10:23) I well know, O Jehovah, that to earthling man his way does not belong. It does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step.

He would further answer your question by saying he's taken steps to create a heavenly government -- free from imperfect human rulers and Satanic influence -- that will be ruled by his son; who's sacrificial blood would pay the way. (John 3:16)

(Daniel 2:44) “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite;"

And while on earth Jesus would advertise this kingdom as something good for humanity.

(Matthew 6:9-10) “YOU must pray, then, this way: “‘Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified. Let your kingdom come. Let your will take place, as in heaven, also upon earth.
(Matthew 24:14) And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.
(Matthew 10:7) As YOU go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of the heavens has drawn near.’

And then God's kingdom would become fully established in 1914.

(Revelation 11:15) And the seventh angel blew his trumpet. And loud voices occurred in heaven, saying: “The kingdom of the world did become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will rule as king forever and ever.”

And the very first thing this government would do under Jesus' leadership is kick Satan and his rebellious followers out of the heavens and down the vicinity of the earth.

(Revelation 12:10-12) “Now have come to pass the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ, because the accuser of our brothers has been hurled down, who accuses them day and night before our God! 11 And they conquered him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their witnessing, and they did not love their souls even in the face of death. 12 On this account be glad, YOU heavens and YOU who reside in them! Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to YOU, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time.”

Soon God's heavenly kingdom will take over.

Daniel 2:31-35 “You, O king, happened to be beholding, and, look! a certain immense image. That image, which was large and the brightness of which was extraordinary, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was dreadful. As regards that image, its head was of good gold (Bablyon), its breasts and its arms were of silver (Medo-Persia), its belly and its thighs were of copper (Greece), its legs were of iron (Rome), its feet were partly of iron and partly of molded clay (Britain and the United States). You kept on looking until a stone (God's Kingdom) was cut out not by hands, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and of molded clay and crushed them. At that time the iron, the molded clay, the copper, the silver and the gold were, all together, crushed and became like the chaff from the summer threshing floor, and the wind carried them away so that no trace at all was found of them. And as for the stone that struck the image, it became a large mountain and filled the whole earth. (Read this if you would like more information of this topic.)

The implication here seems to be that all human governments should be abolished. An interesting advocation for chaos.
