Haha, no one will ever take me seriously here again. Seriously though, the boy turtle bonks her with his head when he wants sex- how is that not funny?

You mean humans are supposed to do it differently? No wonder I've had problems!

Turtle porn is very amusing. :D

That's not to say I like it. :? STOP LOOKING AT ME!! !! :shaking:

This is pretty tame to some of the 'open-ended' forums that I've seen come...and go. I try to run it down the middle, as some here do. I'll state things I think are true, but with a difference

The way society, the media, and the Internet work, it's possible to set yourself up with people who agree with you, and ignore anyone who doesn't (I've made this argument before, so if you recognize it, skip to the next paragraph...;) After a while, you consider that opinion, or position, to be the only logical one, since everywhere you look, people agree with you. People who disagree with you are either mean, or stupid, or both. And having your outlook questioned makes you angry, because how could someone disagree with all of your sources?

One thing caught my eye; a post about a problem having only 1 solution. What a sad world that would be. In an increasingly complex world; most of the answers of tomorrow are going to be 'all or most of the above'.

I listen to (probably too much) talk radio, from Rush to Randy, to Stephanie Miller, etc. I get several different outlooks on the issues. Each tells part of the story, almost like a political Rashomon, depending on their viewpoint. But each ignores facts that the others bring up, so I feel like I'm getting a better picture.

I mean, it looks (from a very cursory viewpoint) that if you're an athiest, anti-American, and pro-Palestinian, you've pushed all the 'correct' buttons in this forum...;) That's what makes things in here so 'hectic'. Just don't use the 'Nazi' argument; that's been done so often, there's a name for it (unfortunately, I can't remember what it is), which usually indicates the discussions' over...;)

Godwin's Law. The longer an online discussion goes on, the probability that someone will make a comparison to Hitler or the Nazis approaches 1. It is traditional that whoever brings up said Teutonic villains first loses whatever they were arguing, and the thread is locked, thought I don't think that is enforced around here.

Only a Nazi would try to forbid us from using the "Nazi" argument. Jeez, pakled, you're such a Nazi. :P

Actually, I didn't miss the "joke"....It just wasn't funny :D

whatever.

it amused multiple people in this thread. Actually the irony is that the people who missed the joke and the point (or didn't think it was funny) are usually the people who lack the ability to laugh at themselves and tend to get the angriest in discussions. And the people who got the joke and thought it was funny (or at least got the point), are usually the people who have a sense of humor about themselves and are less likely to be upset or angry during a discussion.

Again, you are incorrect. I laugh at myself all of the time actually. But again you assume, in typical Shiggily fashion, that if someone doesn't get your "jokes" (although I don't know in what universe you could REALLY consider what you said to be a 'joke'), or disagrees or doesn't understand your (cold, logical) point of view, that it points to some sort of flaw in that person. Really all it boils down to, is some people (and I know for fact that i'm not the only one) find your style of "debate" and "humour" to be particularly abrasive. Just because people don't think this same as you doesn't mean there is something wrong with them. On the contrary, if everyone was the same as you and thought the same as you, the world would be a cold and scary place :D

I know it's hard to interpret inflection online, but most of the cold scary world understood that this was a cold scary joke. I myself grappled with indecision once, but I now know which way is forward thinking. One thing I've learned is never to look for an emotional handout. Nurturing doesn't come around quite so often to anyone who really needs it. I think by now everyone on here has to know that they set themselves up for dramatic disappointment in the argument department by getting over emotional about silly postings.

I think people do need a little nurturing... just not in the form of being allowed to throw fits, call names, etc. Healthy nurturing... which I think you can do without allowing emotion to cloud over your reasoning to the point that you no longer care about the truth (and whether or not you believe the truth) you merely care about being right. I think that's why I am always on the fence. I am always open to the other side of an argument when it is presented intelligently because I might be wrong. And I want to hear what people who think I am wrong actually believe. But not in a way that it seems like they believe what they want dogmatically. It is very important to me that they present it rationally so that I can consider the facts (and not the driving emotions that one person might experience, but would be different for me). Then I can make my decisions, either by altering my views or by explaining why I disagree.

I guess I am an adherent to the whole "gentleman's discussion" approach. where everyone sits down and discusses things quietly and calmly and while they might be passionate about what they believe, it is never to the point that they are overcome. I think discussions should transcend who is right and wrong. Mostly because much of what we believe is not a case of right or wrong but of interpretation and opinion derived from facts we encounter. Who is to insist that your interpretation must be wrong and mine must be right. In reality it is more likely that we are both partially right and partially wrong, and the truth is somewhere in between both sides.

Which is why I tend to pick a little on both sides. To find that spot in the middle that maximizes reliability, effectiveness, and "correctness" while minimizing flaws, fallacies, and "incorrectness". In almost every argument both sides have compelling arguments, I fail to see why the optimal belief isn't a combination of the two arguments... since most arguments only have small aspects that are mutually exclusive.

Take abortion for an example. Anti-abortion wants no abortion for interesting reasons, and Pro-abortion wants abortion for interesting reasons. The only mutually exclusive aspect is in the actual act of abortion (allowing it or not). So I think an optimal solution is to examine the facts and institute regulated abortion with mandatory counseling to prevent rash decision-making that could lead to depression or repeat abortions by teenagers. Decision-making like this at least considers both sides and their arguments... instead of dismissing them entirely because you feel you are right 100% therefore they must be wrong 100%. Other people have some good and valid views, they should be allowed to express those views and have them seriously considered. You never know... you might be the one who is wrong and they could be the one who is right. If you are a true seeker of the truth you will never know unless you listen to them. And I don't mean pay them lip service and the beat them with the proverbial mallet of your awesome truth or attack them like the aforementioned nuclear badger. I mean actually listen to them.

I understand what you mean as I have a similar perspectivist viewpoint. Although I think I get carried away since I always try to fix people but I don't teach them (teaching implies its a skill that can be learned by following techniques, methods of thinknig, etc) while real strength comes inherently for different people through different resources. I know this was a little off topic but I can see where your coming from.

it does produce a rather disturbing mental picture. But maybe not as disturbing as Japanese tentacle porn.

Okay... Now you pissed Me off! I happen to like Japanese Tentacle Porn. Although I acknowledge that I am disturbingly mental, so it is what it is, what it is, what it is... Where was I?

Anyway... It occurs to me (I know this has been pointed out already in various ways) that posting this topic under a thin veneer of tongue-in-cheek/ostensibly mildly self deprecating 'humor' is still a pretty underhanded way to pick a fight with the folks who brawl too much, while poo-pooing the folks who brawl too much. Self-satisfying on so many levels.

Congratulations. This one is a riot. I laughed so hard I cried.

I think its more of an issue that people don't like how the logic approach comes off to them. Without the emotional element it comes off abrasive. The need for others to force their opinions or fight with other people reeks of emotional insecurity. In the end does it matter? no people develop at different paces while I've made my personal mission on self development others revel in their flaws, insecurities, etc. Thats their choice but asking for a civilized discussion hardly constitutes as igniting a flame war.

Alot of people didn't have a problem with Emphrella or whatever her name was generally tried to make the contributions here based on IQ ( her mistaken view of maturity) in that she basically insulted everyone there claiming her only wish was civilized discussion. The op hasn't taken that route though I kind of see it as partly acknowledging that situation as a topic. In general there was a time in which people could sit down and address these contradictions in views without screaming "idiot , your wrong because (science, religion, insert reason here) says so. I think this is a nostaglic idea that will never come into fruition based on the society wide need or wish to embrace in their emotions.

I have nothing against Japanese tentacle porn. It is just more disturbing than turtle porn (IMO).

Otherwise I think the original post lost a little in translation. As it wasn't intended to pick a fight. More to show people that brawling is counter-intuitive in intellectual discussion or debates. But in a more amusing way than "You guys need to be nice to each other". Because technically they don't. It would just work in their favor to be.

I think that IQ and maturity are not the same thing, but I do think that maturity and intellectual discussion are mutually beneficial. Anyway, that was the point of the thread.

I think that a certain amount of emotional weight or connection to an argument can be valid and deserving of recognition. But I think people need to be open about it. The issue I had with the now infamous ephemerella thread was that she admitted that her original post could be offensive, apologized and deleted the more inflammatory wording. Her main purpose was to point out that she felt she didn't have a community she could fit into geared toward discussions of relationships. The first few pages, people responded to her argument and suggestion, and a few pointed out how they felt offended and why. Then people got overly defensive and started attacking her more than her argument, and yeah...the first "nazi" accusation shows up on page 4 or 5.

In short, I don't think emotions are the problem- bringing individual experience to the table is often relevant, and emotion is part of that- but taking things so personally that you dismiss any outside experiences contradicting your own becomes a problem, and discussion is no longer possible: the point is lost, and people attack people.

But maybe I'm just a boring opportunist waiting to be entertained... I miss lurking Griff's fight threads.
