Notice that you didn't actually address the argument, you merely mentioned some unrelated opinions of Franklin's and used them to justify dismissing everything else he'd ever said; lazy, but true to form.

I addressed the argument as baloney. If everyone could climb out of poverty who would be doing the minimum wage jobs? I'm not sure I even trust the authenticity of the quote to be honest. If it is true, it just shows that even intelligent people are capable of believing dumb things when it suits their prejudices.

You seem to lump all conservatives into one pile then try and backpedal into something like this when called out on it. By "those conservatives" you might as well just said all. Hardly matters any more since I'm past the point where I believe you can be successfully corrected. You can still be run up a tree with ease, just not permanently set straight.

That is kind of his pattern, isn't it? I can't think of another poster here who dissembles or makes excuses for his posts so frequently, whether it's that he was drunk, that someone pissed him off so he was trying to troll them in revenge, that he didn't care in the first place and had to go catch some wrestling, etc. I still don't think he's used to having to defend his beliefs, in his bubble they're so self evidently correct that only someone who was stupid or malicious could possibly disagree, so he's caught off guard when called out on the nastier stuff he lets slip.
'

It's an all too well known pattern but you're right, he is a rather unique individual....though not in a positive way. It does no good to explain my views on welfare and assisting the poor which I think are on the generous side for a hard hearted evil conservative. All I get in return the next time is more direct quotations from the Progressive's Guide to the Universe, chapter on the evils of conservatism. I've about given up any serious discussion and only spar with him for entertainment purposes. Well, sparring is a bit too generous; more like I'm a big dog running a cat up a tree for amusement. I'll stop here since that's about all I can say without committing an act of trollery.

PS: Gotta be careful about the drunk accusations. I got a TOS for it even though he's on record multiple times for admitting to posting while drunk. :drunken:

If they can be mass produced to where they are cost effective they'll be doing just about anything the average minimum wage worker is doing and without the human related hassles. Of course with the left being the left they'd soon be championing for the rights of robots...

But he was right about this.
My ancestors got off the boat poor and without any nanny state handouts but managed just fine as did many others.

Yes, but the 18th, 19th, and early 20th century poor lived literally in hunger, worked long hours at the most dangerous jobs, had no social respect, and didn't live particularly long. When those poor workers tried to organize, they found their lives under threat by gun bearing thugs hired by employers, or were used as a bargaining chip, then betrayed by the skilled workers unions. So much for trying to reach for prosperity. Then there were blacks and Chinese, and other racial minorities who were kept down by force of law. America was never the paradise for all those who reached for the brass ring.
My family on my dad's side, after getting off the boat and heading west, had been both farmers, and frontier labor with affiliation to the radical IWW.

Yeah right; my family actually perished from famine in the early 20th century here which means I'm not really here.
Next...

Striking union members were often fired on and killed by hired gunmen working for corporations as late as the nineteen-teens. Plenty of poor farmers fleeing from the dust bowl in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and elsewhere never made it alive to start over in California and the Pacific Northwest. Before the New Deal relief, plenty of people left without work, or couldn't keep up their farms, were left destitute, and with that, faced hunger, untreated illness, illness brought on by stress from anxiety, and so forth.
Your dismissive attitude toward my previous post has earned you :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P .

Dismissive? All you ever do is read and regurgitate from the party handbook. What's not to dismiss?

In a word: no.

There isn't enough good paying jobs for all Americans, that's fact. So robotics will just make more people go on welfare, which you dislike. Again there isn't , hasn't every been, and never will be enough good paying jobs for all Americans. Capitalism will never allow for that. The system would fail.

It's like the rich. The more people become rich the less rich people have. It's in the best interest of the rich to keep people poor. Money has to come from somewhere and being th rich hole 80% of it in their bank accounts wasting away , that's where it'd come from. At same time their working to increase their bank accounts by draining the middle class.

So if everyone susceeed and moved up then everyone else's money would be divided up to give to the people who moved up. So the previous people would get less then they did before. That's unacceptable to those people. Plus if everyone moved up we'd all be equals. Who'd they compare themselves to to feel better then. No middle class and rich need the poor to serve them and to look down upon.

Until you know the conservatives I know, I don't think you an speak intelligibly about them. One of them in fact boasted how he had raised himself from poverty (he was from a farm in South Dakota) to a successful businessman, and he said that those who were poor were as such because of bad choices he had no responsibility for.

Where is the hatred and contempt there? That's pretty bog standard conservative personal responsibility politics, the belief that anyone can make it if they put their mind to it; you can disagree with that or call it unrealistic (or, if you're Marshall, the Just World Fallacy), but turning that into hate or contempt is beyond a stretch. When you argue with these people, is that what you tell them, that they hate the poor and hold them in contempt, or do you use different words while privately judging?

Kraichgauer wrote:
The fact that I specified which conservative I was speaking of at the very start is what's important.

You switched from specific to generalized, much as if I'd been speaking of my liberal friends, but then pivoted to a point about liberals generally. Also, you appear to have mischarcterized the beliefs of the specific conservatives you mentioned as well, so it's kind of moot.

The thing is, due to circumstance, disability, or age, not everyone can just pull themselves up by their bootstraps. At one time, temp agencies were the best way for people without a job history, or had been out of the job market for too long, to get back into the job pool. But now, that avenue has been cut off, with those temp agencies demanding a recent job history. My point being, it isn't so easy just to find employment if you aren't already employed. And that's when the conservatives who lack empathy deem the needy as lazy and shiftless without ever really caring why.
And responsibility politics? Where does the scathing for lack of responsibility by conservatives come in when corporations, in order to save some money, decide to drop huge segments of their workforce, cut wages and benefits, maybe even relocate to a whole different country, leaving all loyal employees destitute? That sort of irresponsibility on the part of big business seems pretty detrimental to the economy at large, but I don't seem to recall any conservative outrage about that. It seems the conservative call for responsibility is pretty selective, and is based on class differentiation. I could give examples of how conservatives involved in the cult of personal responsibility are selective in matters of race, too, but we'd be here forever.
As for hatred and contempt being behind this selective responsibility politics - it all goes back to the pseudo-religious belief that the poor are somehow poor because they're morally corrupt, while the rich are rich because they're being rewarded for their morality and values. This is a self-serving, and self righteous misinterpretation of Calvinist theology which Calvin himself would have gone hoarse with condemning. It all comes from the same pit of hypocrisy that spawned both secular Randian libertarianism, and the prosperity gospel of the very superficial evangelical theology. I'm not saying that all conservatives are inundated in such beliefs, or even are so aware of it, but the so called responsibility politics leads back to this empathyless cesspool.
And are your liberal friends aware that you said you hate liberals? Because I do remember you telling me that you do. And no, I'm not going to anally go searching through all your posts to find where you wrote that. But on the up side, I actually don't hold that against you, because I of all people know one can state things out of anger, even when it's not actually believed. :)

Benjamin Franklin was an elitist SOB. This is just a BS excuse to justify not giving a s**t. Capitalism works through competition. There are a set number of "poor" by design. If everyone could climb out of poverty who would be doing the minimum wage jobs? Why not eliminate poverty by paying all people a wage they can actually live on comfortably?

The elitist SOB invented bifocals, lightning rods, fire places the heat homes properly, promoted street lights, established hospitals in Philadelphia for the poor. Getting poor people to work by which they can support themselves is far more important than government hand-outs. And he promoted literacy. Franklin hauled his share of the burden.

He also obtained French Aid for the American Revolution without which we would all be toasting the Good Health of Her Majesty, the Queen of England.

By the way there will always be a minimum wage since all wages cannot be equal. Some forms of labor are harder than others or more dangerous than others so they pay a premium on wages. Some forms of labor require a higher than average level of skill, so there is a premium paid of special skills. Do you expect brain surgeons to get the same wages as people who flip hamburgers?

If all wages were equal I would seek labor that required the least effort to produce. Why become an expert if it does not pay extra?

And seriously, stealing? Is the military stealing by using taxpayer money? Is fire and police protection stealing for using other people's money to help those few who are victims of fire or crime?

Taxation is theft. It means getting money from someone with the threat of prison for non payment or the seizure by force of a person's assets. In a properly run society police, fire and military service would be available through a market mechanism. In our society we resort to force.

Citizens get services in return for taxation. Getting something after giving something hardly seems like theft. I've never heard of a mugger taking a guy's wallet, then leaving him a roll of cash.
I think the market as a force that rights all wrongs is way overblown. The market had a hundred years to correct racial inequality and failed, whereas the government legalized civil rights in a few decades.

Read again what I wrote and what it was in response to. Here, I'll help; Marshall asked who'd be doing the minimum wage jobs if everyone was able to climb out of poverty and i replied that robots could do it. Either way, robots will be coming in larger quantities than already in place so yo'd might as well make peace with that idea.
