Violence erupted in France for the 11th Saturday in a row today as thousands of so-called Yellow Vest protestors demonstrated against President Emmanuel Macron's government.

It came two days after the head of state had accused British politicians of 'tearing society apart' by allowing a Brexit referendum in Britain, but today the chants in his own country were for his resignation.

The worst early violence was in Paris, and in northern towns including Evreux and Rouen, in Normandy, where tear gas and baton charges were used by police to restore order.

Irish MPs and senators are split over plans for a fourfold increase in carbon tax to put Ireland on course to meet its 2030 climate change targets, following the yellow vest protests in France.

Fine Gael and Green Party members of the Oireachtas climate action committee want a report next month to recommend a carbon tax of at least €80 a ton over the next decade, which would add €12 to the cost of filling a car with diesel or petrol and €7.20 to a bag of coal.

Sinn Fein is opposing increases in carbon tax until there is better public transport, grant aid for retrofitting houses, and lower costs for electric vehicles. Fianna Fail is also against recommending a carbon tax rise in the climate action report.

Yes. The Macron regime, that is shooting people in the head. He needs to go and has become illegitimate.

I have limited knowledge on the specifics of what is going on in France at the moment. As such, I am assuming that my view of the issue is overly simplistic and possibly a result of ignorance on some level.

I'm puzzled in a way. France elects Macron rather than Le Pen. Between the two, Macron favors a more global and progressive philosophy whereas Le Pen favors France's nationalism.

Macron starts to adopt more global-centric laws (ie climate change) and there are massive ongoing protests across the entire country.

This is what I'm not understanding. Unless the protesters were perhaps Le Pen supporters and are rebelling against policies they were never OK with but are now being impacted by?

If the U.S., for example, elected a president whose platform was to try hard to repeal the 2nd Amendment and that president did what he/she could to toward repealing the 2nd Amendment when in office (no surprise, right?).......and then many people rioted in the U.S. against such a thing. Would they have been just the pro-2nd Amendment people all along? Would any have been ambivalent about the issue when they voted but then changed their mind afterward to join the protests? The protesters couldn't consist, even in part, of French voters who knew Macron's campaign platforms going in, voted for him, only then to protest the very things they voted for?

Macron was pretty much placed in and left wing candidates were ignored. French people didn't vote to have the speed limits reduced so it takes them hours to get into work. They didn't vote to bomb Syria on behalf of Al Qaeda. He was pained as a "moderate/centrist" when he's a banker puppet little dictator. He's now showing his true colours with the way unarmed protesters are being shot in the head.

I don't know much about Macron specifically so my point of view may be simplistic as well, but I will say what this looks like to me based on the "quacks like a duck" method of deductive reasoning.

The people behind the "Gilets Jaunes" movement are motivated by (among other things) Climate change denial, racism (inspired specifically by anti-immigrant sentiments) and traditional Anti-semitism. By creating chaos in Paris, they have managed to attract Anarchists, who simply want an excuse to torch automobiles and throw bricks through shop windows, and leftist types who are attracted to anything that outwardly appears to represent the struggle of disadvantaged working people against elitist bankers and other sinister cabals.

This is hard for Americans to understand because we don't have the same tradition of virulent anti-Semitism and because the average american rejects leftist politics because he/she sees leftists as people who want to confiscate their hard-earned dollars via taxation to promote some sort of ivory-tower experiment in social engineering (whether or not that point of view is fully justified). Whereas the French are historically more receptive to a "socialist" message.

I happen to think that if this movement does not die down, France and other parts of Europe might be in a very dangerous situation. The government is largely helpless. It can't allow these people to gain power, but any action taken to control them can be easily presented by Gilets Jaunes propagandists as the act of powerful bullies against defenseless ordinary people.

The violence is being carried out by the black blocks/antifa who are left alone by the police. The yellow vests want to separate themselves from that. They are just ordinary people who have had enough of the neoliberal policies and the establishment. Puppets like Macron not working for them but for the bankers. France has been decimated by mass immigration. No one wants to pay a fortune for pseudo 'climate science' projections that are politically motivated. Interesting that people who claim to care about the environment support mass immigration. Please stop using antisemitism to discredit everything you don't like.

In order to differentiate anti-semites from climate change deniers:

Anti-semites in the 20th Century built ovens to incinerate millions of Jews and other people they didn't like.

Climate change deniers want to turn the entire planet into an oven in which all of humanity will incinerate.

The terms anti-semetic and climate change deniers are in today's culture used to shut down debate. Hurtful labels are being thrown around like candy in today's society. Anyone you disagree with can have terms like Nazi applied to them falsely and as a result they are painted as morally corrupt and evil. Therefore we do not have to discuss issues or search for the truth of things. These are the same tactics that the Nazis used against the Jews.

Part of the Nazi philosophy was to dehumanize the Jews. During the Holocaust, Nazis referred to Jews as rats. Hutus involved in the Rwanda genocide called Tutsis cockroaches. Slave owners throughout history considered slaves subhuman animals. Dehumanization opens the door for cruelty and genocide.
