That's an understatement. She epitomized entitlement, distained the grassroots, distained the electorate, and was definitely no Ted Kennedy. In some respects its relieving she lost - progressives would and should have had great shame if she was the face of their cause.

Pandering and corporate welfare handouts to the banks, as well as hiring lobbyists to help (the abysmal) Geithner develop economic policy has proved fatal. Populism - even if of a conservative variety - is in demand. Unless a working progressive populism forms to counterbalance this, the Democrats are in store for a crushing.

It's been said that the Democrats cost themselves this one.

Massachusetts is NOT a Republican stronghold. It's predominantly Democrat with a strong independent voting block. Had they run the election when it should have been run shortly after Kennedy passed, they could have run a cardboard cutout on the Democratic ticket and won the seat. It should have been impossible for a Republican to ever win Massachusetts.

The more they delayed, the more time people had to see what was going on in D.C. and they gave the people time to really look at the options being offered for the seat. Whey they saw what Coackley was all about, it really moved the independents to go out and vote against her.
