We are epiphanies of long chain. Where this long chain starts and where it is heading we don’t know. But there is a clear continuity in life through the single epiphanies on individual souls. Souls are accidents, get lost, they are made of idiosyncrasies, casual memories, happy and unhappy, the baggage of single body. Souls perish, but genetic information survives, together with actions dictated by that genetic information. Lust and love in odd mixtures are the primary connections, love of your offspring, affection for your kin, some reliability on relatives.

i find comfort in the age-old words of the persian mystic Rumi, who said-

I died as a mineral and became a plant;
I died as a plant and rose to animal;
I died as animal and I was a man.
Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?
Yet once more I shall die as man to soar
With angels blest. But even from an angel
I must pass on: all except God must perish.
When I have sacrificed my angel soul,
I shall become what no mind ever conceived.

The long chain is a kind of relay. Individual immortality is impossible because the earth (and any other planet or any other place where life could be possible) is bound to change and living creatures must change to survive and the only practicals solution, worked out by evolution,is reproduction asexual or sexual. Sexual reproduction seems more effective because it can draw change from different (but not too different) pools of instructions (genetic information). So, at least in this planet, all turns around mixing information through pollination or copulation.
