Did you know that in early Christianity there was no devil?

Christianity was one of the first religions worshiping one all-powerful god, as opposed to many pagan religions with many deities which were common at the time. So this one god was responsible for both punishing and rewarding his followers.

Most people at the time were uncomfortable with the god that can punish as well as reward. And so they made up the devil. So they had this devil dude to blame for the ills, and god to thank for deliverance.

Devil = made up; BY CHRISTIANS, AFTER THE FACT. If you don't believe me, look it up. (Yeah I know some of you wont... because if you were willing to learn objective reality you wouldn't believe this crap in the first place.)

IMO...the belief in the devil and the fear of eternal damnation has been the main thing that's kept christianity "in business" for 2000 years.

I used to be a Satanist back in the 1980s,
now, I don't know what I am.

the good guys.

After several years of fighting and blocking
the rule of Jakahollah, mum finally came to
her senses and divorced this evil man and
when this happend, I became athiest, not
beliveing in any deity of any kind.

The day he died, I became agnostic.

Today, I don't know what I am, but
I do have my own religion belifes,
but I don't spread them around, they
are my own private belifes.

Well....I suppose you wouldn't have defined yourself as a Laveyian Satanist at the time. For the most part...they claim to be atheists who don't believe in the literal, objective reality of such entities. Your beliefs seem like they had much more in common with Gnosticism to me.

Correction: that was actually Judaism, world's first truly monotheistic religion, founded by Abraham. Christianity originally stared out as a simplified version of Judaism, to make it more understandable to pagans (the Romans who were taking over Israel, to be exact). It was founded by Jesus and propagated by St. Peter. Later, it ended up introducing a lot of its own concepts, such as the Trinity, heaven (Jewish heaven is very vague and obscure) and hell (Judaism has no equivalent), the golden rule, loving your neighbor, witnessing/proselytizing, etc.

I'm so, so sorry for stepping into angry enemy territory, so please forgive me. Yes, I'm a Christian. Therefore every word I say is crap and should be disproved then, right?

Yes, I believe in the devil. But more or less, it ends up being an abstract thing for me, which there is nothing wrong with. All the wrong in this world - war, famine, abuse, homelessness, etc... I see that as how "the devil" has affected the world. When the good guy always finishes last? Because "the devil", or whatever it is, has power - life is dark. Things don't always have a good ending. Quite often they don't.

Further, what business is it to you if someone doesn't subscribe to your way of thinking? If someone suffering from severe depression who has attempted suicide, finds comfort in what they perceive to be God and relies on that to persevere through depression (and in some cases, it gets them through it. Call it false hope if you will, it's hope that made a difference nonetheless), just how does it harm you? How does it harm you for someone else to believe in something else?

I'm not asking if the way they treat you harms you, I'm asking if them keeping it private to themselves harms you. If someone believes in God but doesn't even mention it to you, are you offended? Is it really such a bother that other people are "ignorant" and that your perfect view of a society of "no religion and everybody thinks the same" isn't happening?

I don't care if someone is an Atheist, it's just angry atheism that is a complete waste of time. So as long as humans are in charge, religion won't go away. Nevertheless, it's a good and bad thing. There are the obvious bad things the church has done (three words: Westboro Baptist Church), but has done some good things as well. Going back to the beginning, it gives others hope as well. So, let's say hypothetically they're all wrong. So? Would you rather have all these people relying on god: Victims of various physical and mental illnesses; would you just rather them all lose hope and off themselves?

Angry christianity ("All atheists are sinners that shall die/burn in hell!") and angry atheism ("All christians are ret*ds that should die!/whatever") are no different to me.

I believe it was called Lucifer. I don't have my Old Testament history down, though.

to SOUND BACKWARD: i am not a christian, i guess at this moment i'm agnostic. i believe at some level i envy people who can believe in god. i am alone. belief in something would be comforting. my hang up is with religion. not a fan of religion. not at all. no, not a little bit.

do not worry about getting trashed. you're not alone. i started something when i asked atheists to prove there is no god. holy crap batman! it was savage, savage i tell you. i was stomped, beaten, pummeled, spit on, cursed, tied up, tasered, and vilified as if i had said i was a christian. oh the horror of it all. i may never recover. you're young, you can take it. you have time for the wounds to heal.
