Anyone here know about Islam as it's practiced in West Africa?

I know that this is an odd place to post this question, but this is the only forum I belong to and I often find that people give better answers than statistics.

If by West Africa you mean south of the Sahara and west of Camaroon: Islam tends dominate inland at the edge of the sahara,
with Christianity and Paganism diving up the jungly coastal areas to the south.
In Nigeria, for example, the Hausa (in the North) are muslims. The Southwestern Yoruba tend to be Pagan, and Southeastern Ibo
tend to be Christian.

My understanding is that virttually the whole Islamic World outside ofShiite Iran and Iraq is Sunni including all muslim areas of
Africa.

I have a penpal from West Africa, Sierra Leone to be specific. She is from the Pulaar tribe and is Muslim. I get the sense that non-Pulaar Christians are generally well-tolerated, but people from the tribe who convert to Christianity are not tolerated at all. For instance, I heard a story about a guy from the tribe whose father tried to poison him because he converted from Islam to Christianity.
