Let me say, for starters, that I detest the candidacy of Christine O'Donnell. I view her as the embodiment of anti-intellectual, religious demagoguery that's gripped the GOP for the past decade. Someone who rejects evolutionary biology and imagines the science pointing to the effectiveness of contraceptives surely won't enact reality-based public policy. There are, of course, her moronic comments on scientists creating mice with human brains. She's negligent at running a campaign office (financially) and may even be a political crook (if the investigations go anywhere). And, of course, I strongly oppose her stance on self-satisfaction.
But this seems moronic:

It was quite clear from the context of the clip that O'Donnell was using this as a story of how adolescents can be sucked into EVVILLL UNDERGROUND SHADOWWWYYY practices. It also seems to be BS or at least a severely distorted memory - but that's hard to verify.

Firstly, I know "witch" is a pretty ambigious term - most people who either describe themselves or others as "witches" are refering to a cultural construct that's a sort of mess of elements from Christian mythology and a poor understanding of the various heterogenous animistic spiritual traditions from across the globe. Most people - in the modern context - who claim to be "witches" tend to be "Wiccans" - and this New Age religious belief is based on a revisionist account of pre-Christian Europe, 19th century spiritualism, and various Christian mythological constructs the Wiccans define themselves using. To me the whole practice -especially using a slight modification of a negative stereotype AS YOUR identity - seems pretty stupid, but I'm just an atheist who believes in the use of rational thought.
I don't know who the hell Christine O'Donnell's "witch" friends - but claims about a "Satanic Altar" with "blood dripping from it" seem pretty bogus to me. I can't be sure, though, because "witchcraft" is such a decentralized concept that any misfit who thinks up moronically outrageous practices & gains a few equally attentive-grapping followers can probably idenitfy themselves as a "witch" and nutcase Christians will interpret this as evidence of a shadowy underworld.
Anyway, WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? It was done in the 1980s and O'Donnell has since became a dyed-in-the-wool faithhead. She was clearly using this example to scare gullible suburban Christians into going on (semi-metaphorical) witch hunts to purify their shopping malls of all evil and subliminal anti-Christian messages and ban EVVILLL books.
Nevertheless, part of me things she deserves this backlash for her "dabbling in witchcraft [during the '80s]" past as when you use religious demagoguery to get elected to office, expect to be voted out (or, rather, not get passed the post-primary stage) on the basis of religious idiocy.
I still find it absurd, though.
