Political shifts since the 2008 Reccession
I think it'd be a fun activity to chart all the political shifts since the 2008 - present Worldwide reccession began.
United States
2008 - (Far right) GOP Executive to (Centre-right) Democratic Executive (relative left shift)
- House/Senate gain a few more progressive Democrats and shifts from centre-right to centre (relative left shift)
2010 - Scott Brown beats Martha Coackley (rightward shift for MA senate spot)
- Tea Partisans ascendant, GOP wins house and reduces Democrats majority in the Senate (far-right shift)
Canada
2008 - Harper's Minority is strengthened (shift right)
2009 - Darrell Dexter (NS NDP) wins Novia Scotia's provincial election (left shift)
2010 - Calgary elects a centrist mayor in Naheed Nenshi (relatively leftward shift from rightwing incumbent)
2010 - Toronto elects far-right mayor Rob Ford (far-right shift)
2010 - Liberal beats New Democrat in riding of Winnipeg North (relative rightward shift)
Iceland
2009 - Centre-left social democratic government replaces neoliberal party (left shift)
United Kingdom
2010 - Conservative Party ousts Labour (rightward shift)
Sorry, but you Canadians have no idea what center is

Sorry, but you Canadians have no idea what center is, because your politicans are pretty much all far-left.
I'm sure it must look like that from inside a country where the "center" keeps pushing further and further right. Kind of like how it looks like the Sun revolves around the Earth, or the Earth is flat.
Canada, far left? Ha! That's a joke. We're starving the beast quite fine over here and had crazy Mulroneyism and John Crow and the Great Canadian Slump brought to you by the Right wing. Our business elite yelled at Moody's to reduce our credit rating and none of them saw the inside of a cell for this treason.
The only reason why we aren't galloping further right now is because of the minority governments. Thanks to the United Conservative Party, the parties are no longer able to force right wing social engineering down our throats without fear of reprisal.
Doesn't your country not have free-speech protection?
Oh so your socialized medical system is going to go bankrupt still, have fun with that. Once people are on a socialized system and no longer know how to be independent, there is going to be problems when those programs go. That's the problem with having too much Government, people get dependent on Government.
From Babylon 5 concerning the psi corps: "The corps is mother, the corps is father..."
I hope I'm not the only one that noticed this parallel.

Plotting to damage Canada's finances by yelling at Moody's is more than just a matter of free speech, it's treason. The purpose is to engineer a crisis to force the government to carry out extremely damaging social engineering of the type that they want. Conspiring to ruin Canada's reputation in this way deserves life imprisonment. That they aren't in prison shows that they are above the law and they got away with it and it worked. They got their social engineering. They also were the ones comparing Canada's finances with Mexico's during that time in the wake of the so-called Tequila Crisis. They should be destroyed these traitors, destroyed totally.
Our medical system is not going bankrupt, but thanks to these plutocratic traitorous scum the medical system was subject to the "starve the beast" routine for about ten years. Funding still has not been restored despite the improved situation under the minority parliaments. The Liberal-NDP government in fact fell because the NDP demanded more work be done to restore the funding but the Liberals refused to do so and favoured the establishment of a larger private sector for medical care and insurance, one that emerged during the "beast starving" period of austerity caused by the plutocracy's treason for which they should suffer the heaviest penalty on the books.
Sure .............
I'll have what you are smoking.
It's called reality. Perhaps you should remove your head from the sand pit it's currently in and compare Obama's various policies to those of Sweden's centre-right Prime Minister or realize that the only French Presidential candidate last election who shared Obama's position on the death penalty was a far-right fringe candidate.
But that'd require thought on your part.

Let me just tell you that compared to most developed countries, Canada's political spectrum is fairly right. Sure, it's not as insanely, deviantly rightwing as bankster-ruled America, but it's still pretty rightwing by standards of the First World.
The plutocrats boasted after their treason about how their work caused the state to be shrunk by something between 5% to 10% during the course of the Great Canadian Slump in the 1990s. This is a right wing-run country in the end. As I said, the minorities have made things better - had Harper's forces won a majority in 2008 we'd be in depression mode following his "regrettable" austerity approach to the financial crisis as he planned to do before the parliamentary majority forced him to do otherwise. I am thankful every day for the Bloc Quebecois.

... how is America to the right? our congress is bought that isn't what anyone but a select few want. if anything it should be described as some kind of corporate totalitarian government.
Support for concentrated monetary power or plutocracy is a crucial element of the sophisticated Right throughout the ages.

How do you enjoy your socialist medicine that I heard was going broke.
It's only going broke because rightwing scumbags (be they Blue Liberals or outright Conservatives) are failing to fund it due to deficit reduction fetishism.
And, as a matter of fact, I very much enjoy my socialist medicine. Thanks to it, I've been diagnosed with Type-I diabetes, Asthma, Asperger's, and Celiac disorder all while living in a household that made $15,000 a year. I might not be alive today were it not for my Manitoba Health Card.
And I've also been bumped ahead in line after a car-accident due to potential complications Diabetes could cause (rational Canadian healthcare is based more on need then finances when it comes to determining who should skip in line).
I'd also like to remind people that this thread really is about documenting electoral shifts since the 2008 reccession and surely there must be other elections that aren't already typed down here that have occurred and resulted in power shifts.
