Why do even the strongest of theists always think that someone who claims that they have actually seen God is insane?

Always? There have been many mystics who have claimed to see God.

It became a stereotype from people who were found incompetent to stand trial for something they claimed they did out of a religious/spiritual motive.

It seems like people who "see" God are random. About the same randomness as people who seem Aliens.

The devoutly religious person can't understand why some random person gets picked for divine revelation instead of them.

And there have been some mystics who have claimed to see unicorns and even a few who have seen pink elephants.

In either case they are Nutsy Fagin. They are deluded by their hallucinations.

People who claim to see what is NOT there are either deluded, mistaken, crazy or just plain liars.

In the Bible, at Sinai, Moses makes a request of G-d. He asks to see G-d.

G-d says that Moses cannot look upon the face of G-d and live, but he agrees to allow Moses to see him from behind so Moses hides behind a rock until G-d passes, and sees the back of G-d.

That's why. To see G-d is to die.

Of course. Once Moses saw God, he (Moses) would know it was all a scam. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!

Thousands of folks claim to see god everyday- muttering bag ladies and winos.

If you're religous you believe only a small number of folks in history have REALLY seen God. Those being the prophets of your particular religion. So every muttering bag lady cant be a real prophet. So there has to be a filtering a process. Just like most lottery tickets are not winners.

How is that relevant to what I wrote? I was making a factual comment, not arguing for a certain view of mystical experience.

Mitt Romney and his coreligionists think Joesph Smith saw God.

But if you or I claim to "see god" Romney would probably brand you or I as 'crazy'.

Christians think sane people stop seeing god after the first century, but Mormons think God made a cameo appearance in the 19th century. Just goes to show that all the word "sanity" means is having the "same delusions as your nieghbors".

Take anything a mystic says with a grain of salt. Mystics are either coo coo or liars.
