I'm gonna miss all ye faithful Christians after tomorrow! Put a good word in with the big guy for me and the rest of us Heathens :) ! We still have five months left to enjoy the torments of this Earth!

I love how this song was written and sung by a Jew

Sometimes I think I'm really not, but either way I had decided years ago to live my life to glorify God to the best of my ability and I will always continue to try for that and not to be ready for any specific date or time. The current "end is precisely now!" people are more than likely to be disillusioned once their counter-scriptural cult leader is proven wrong by nothing happening. However, for as much as I know this is a humor thread, being ready always is what is called for and not being ready for some randomly contrived arbitrary deadline. I really wish charlatans would stop making arbitrary deadlines, or hold themselves to the Levitical standard for false prophets.

Yeah eh. I don't know why people always end up buying into it. It hasn't happened yet even though tons of people make predictions. And the Jehovah Witnesses are pretty obsessed with it as well

I suppose it could have a lot to do with the fact that we're in both a millennial and century transition. Often times doomsday talk increases around the turn of a century. The change of millennium inspires it even further. The years 999 & 1999 had tons of this crap as well as the decade/s before and after

What happened during the turn of the first millennium AD? I've never read anything about people making false predictions for then.

I have read about the Pope at the time saying a few things about it, I wish I could recall everything... I dug this link up but I'm sure there is better info somewhere (though I get the impression this is a pro-Christian article trying to discourage people buying into the Apocalypse stuff):

I doubt it. They'll forget about it, make new predictions, and carry on like usual.

Some will, some wont. If the last time this Campy guy tried to make "end-of-the-world" claims was in 1994, then it's been about 17 years for the guy's previous rhetoric to be forgotten and a new generation of people to be doped to arrive.

I hope so. The world is so much more entertaining when there are vocal factions of people crying about its imminent apocalypse

Thanks for the link DeaconBlues!

Quote:
968 CE: An eclipse was interpreted as a prelude to the end of the world by the army of the German emperor Otto III.

992: Good Friday coincided with the Feast of the Annunciation; this had long been believed to be the event that would bring forth the Antichrist, and thus the end-times events foretold in the book of Revelation. Records from Germany report that a new sun rose in the north and that as many as 3 suns and 3 moons were fighting. There does not appear to be independent verification of this remarkable event.

1000-JAN-1: Many Christians in Europe had predicted the end of the world on this date. As the date approached, Christian armies waged war against some of the Pagan countries in Northern Europe. The motivation was to convert them all to Christianity, by force if necessary, before Christ returned in the year 1000. Meanwhile, some Christians had given their possessions to the Church in anticipation of the end. Fortunately, the level of education was so low that many citizens were unaware of the year. They did not know enough to be afraid. Otherwise, the panic might have been far worse than it was. Unfortunately, when Jesus did not appear, the church did not return the gifts. Serious criticism of the Church followed. The Church reacted by exterminating some heretics. Agitation settled down quickly, as it later did in the year 2000.

1000-MAY: The body of Charlemagne was disinterred on Pentecost. A legend had arisen that an emperor would rise from his sleep to fight the Antichrist.

1005-1006: A terrible famine throughout Europe was seen as a sign of the nearness of the end.

1033: Some believed this to be the 1000th anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus. His second coming was anticipated. Jesus' actual date of execution is unknown, but is believed to be in the range of 27 to 33 CE.

There was quite a bit of this going on between 968 and 1033. I like how the author brings up the level of education in regards to the knowledge of the occurrence. I don't know if you noticed but the 19th century has significant amounts of doomsday saying, and the 20th century even more so. I wonder if this has to do with the increased level of information exchange during these time periods.

This.

I forget exactly where, but in all the literature on the internet about this particular prediction the guy leaves himself an out. In the Bible, when predictions were made, some of them were actually conditional--for example, the prediction that Nineveh would be destroyed. The people of Nineveh repented and God spared Nineveh THAT time.

What he'll probably say is that the message got out and people repented and prayed such that God decided once again to "spare us" a little while longer. There could be another prediction made for 17 years from NOW, rinse, and repeat.

Tomorrow my wife and I are planning on finding a place to plink soda cans with an airgun. The cause of celebration would be finding an area anywhere near where we live which is devoid of paranoid peoples who think any projectile weapon is equivalent to an antimatter bomb.

"Captain, my religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me....That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave."

General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's reply when asked how he could remain calm in battle.
