The 40s pledge of allegiance did mention god.

I was there sonny. No mention of God in the pledge until the Eisenhower administration put it in in 1954.

The pledge was written by a socialist and not adopted officially until 1942.

It was a quasi-fascist declaration of Loyalty. Americans should not be taking Loyalty Oaths.

This sums up my feelings about nationalism. I am an American citizen yet I love righteousness regardless of where it comes from and despise all that is wicked regardless of its origins. I see myself as of no race, despite my parent's identifying by racial terms. I do not value all cultures equally, seeing varying amounts of good, bad and other modal values in all of them, yet I believe no truly great culture would exclude anyone based on birth so long as they are upstanding and virtuous.
