Believe it or not, I actually like the friendlyatheist site. I thought about registering to post on their forums--I'm just busy enough on other internet activities that I don't think I could handle yet one more distraction...

But, yes, I'm glad that Bible got pulled. Something we as parents try to do as much as we can is shield our children from mature subjects such as sexual violence, incest, graphic portrayals of violence, and so forth. And that includes the Bible when those topics come up. I think about "Passion of the Christ" when it first appeared in the theaters, which my wife and I saw before we started our family. And I have to admit, even as a Christian, I would not want my young children to see that film. When they are older, sure.

What the Brick basically does is portray very plain images of what is contained within the Bible. So apart from the fact that children need to have attained a certain level of maturity before being exposed to that kind of subject matter, there is also the context of the portrayal itself. The Bible whitewashes nothing, nor should it. But something like the Brick is going to strike someone as caricature or even comical. And I don't think caricature and comedy best fits the spirit of the OT.

It's good to know my future is safe in the decision making powers of "a handful of people". Aren't you happy about that?

I only discovered recently that certain parts of the bible had been avoided when I was a child, when my brother was asked to read the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den. Neither of us had heard this verse before:

NIV Bible wrote:

At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.

Ouch.

The interesting thing, though, is that we were always told that Jesus had nails driven through his wrists, and even as a child I've never had a problem with that idea.
