interesting quote

I was just reminded of this quote while referring to a section of Profiles in Courage to refresh my memory about something else:
"Liberalism implies particularly freedom of thought, freedom from orthodox dogma, the right of others to think differently from one's self. It implies a free mind, open to new ideas and willing to give attentive consideration....
"When I say liberty, I mean the liberty of the individual to think his own thoughts and live his own life as he desires to live it."
I can't speak for everybody, but quite a few of the savants that I know are strikingly individualistic people. It's also a word that's changed a lot in concrete meaning, which a literalist might find interesting.
Guess who it's attributed to ![]()

Robert A. Taft. There was a time when Republicans were advocates of freedom. That time is past.
