It turns out that, not only can Mitt Romney speak fluent French, but his father was born in Mexico, and he still has family ties in Mexico. As far as I can tell, Mitt Romney won't admit to speaking Spanish.
George Romney's family had moved to Mexico, to live in a polygamous Mormon colony, and avoid persecution by the US government.
When he was a child, Mr. Romney's family fled Mexico during the Mexican Revolution, and lived as refugees in Texas.
George Romney has quite a fascinating rags-to-riches life story, and was quite "liberal" and "progressive" as politicians go.
