I don't care about politics. In my opinion, no matter who you vote for, it's always going to be the same. So why even bother?

If this turns into a debate or a shitstorm, I'm unlikely to go back to this thread.

I simply mean to ask, are there any other apolitical aspies out there?

I'm unlikely to go back to this thread, or only read the responses so don't expect "debates" from me.

Are there any other apolitical aspies out there?

You're stating that you're not coming back to this thread yet you ask a question anyway.

Thanks for pointing that out. I meant to say I didn't want any political debates (I dislike conflict) but I was really only asking if there were any other aspies out there who genuinely didn't like politics.

I dislike politics too and distrust all politicians and all political parties. I know politics is "important" - the difference between living in a relatively free country or half starved under a dictatorship like north Korea. But - I find politics intensely dull and boring.

Personally I find politics to be boring and tedious yet necessary.
I tried the apolitical thing once but it didn't last very long.

Politics is simply a fact of life, even in interpersonal exchanges and professional context.

I used to find it boring, but in the last 3-4 years I've managed to construct a sort of "secret decoder ring" to understand what the hell is going on. The trouble is that almost all of what is in the mainstream media is useless bulls**t.

I.e. "Beltway wisdom," which means things that people in the media think is important, but isn't to the rest of the population. Or, the media always making both sides equally valid even when they aren't, like "the Earth: round or flat? Tonight we'll look at both sides of the issue!" Yeah, no wonder no one is interested in politics. I'm lucky that I have all day long to figure this stuff out, since most people don't.

So, I now find politics infuriating and depressing.

One problem with not participating/being aware of it is that it gives more power to extremists. The craziest people end up being the only ones who vote.

I probably watch more news, politics, and current events than is good for me. I find myself getting either enraged or despondent - but if I don't pay attention, I literally feel like I'm blind to what's going on in the world.

I've tended to lean left, but now I'm wishing I could be more objective. How do you do it?

Well, I distrust the establishment, so I'm voting 3rd party.

I would encourage anyone who is disgusted with the 2 dominant parties to voice their opinion with voting against them by supporting any 3rd party.

I tend to have the same feelings as the OP.

Politicians are just full of s***.

I just moved back home, and I don't even plan to register to vote.

You can avoid politics.

But rest assured, politics won't avoid you.

If by "objective" you mean do I think each side is equally dangerous, dishonest, and so forth -- I don't. In fact, I think that false equivalence is a big problem with the media. I just know that if I cast my message one way or the other then it would get flamed and I'm not interested in that side-discussion.

Yea, my political wiews are mostly a reflection of my personal values, but news articles are my main source of information for knowing anything political, I'm not sure what kind of trends one would follow to get a worldview for themselves.

In my experience, people who are "apolitical" are usually lefties who are too pretentious to bother voting. If all the "apolitical" people actually voted, there would be a lot more left-leaning governments around the world. Guess it is pretty difficult, though. You have to go to a place and do a thing. Tricky stuff.

It is common to become apolitical if you are frustrated for not having an actual choice that matters for you. So, I am gonna guess that you are from the states, in which yeah, being apolitical is correlated with being a leftie as both democrats and republicans are right and extreme right parties.

In my country, the only view is the left, so it is right wingers that tend to be apolitical.

Edit: Well, you are not from the US, that's cool. Me is wrong.
