Holocaust denial is illegal in many countries. Should Maoist genocide denial be illegal?

I wasn't aware that anyone contended the death rate of China under Mao. Even by hardened Maoists.

The semantics of the nazi holocaust were very different. The nazi holocaust was a premeditated attempt to systematically exterminate ethnic groups. That is why holocaust denial is associated with glorifying and substantiating racism and anti semitism.

There was no race or ethnicity motive behind Mao's crimes.

No, because it is an unnecessary restriction of free speech.

We should battle to restrict their denial on the plane of ideas, and if haters are going to hate, as long as they keep it to themselves, I guess I can live with that? But for Maoists... no. There is this sick impulse on the Left to change the past, to make their history glorious, and I don't agree with it. I'm less tolerant in that regard, but let the chips fall where they may, there is no getting around the greatest systematic genocide in human history.

Maoist genocide? Against whom? If it's the Great Leap Forward again, well, all these numbers of deaths thrown around tend to include non births, that is women not giving birth during that period which was one clearly of turmoil. China used to have famines like that all the time which is one reason why China's population didn't increase substantially at all for centuries, only exploding when a certain Chairman Mao was running things, why there was such a population explosion that his successors implemented the one child policy. Clearly Mao created life... he is God!

By the way, one of the purposes of the Great Leap Forward was decentralisation and a very important component was the Commune and Brigade Enterprises... which became an extremely important part of the post-Mao arrangement. Mao's opponents in the '60s (Liu Shaoqi, Deng Xiaoping) tended to support more of a Stalinist route to development.

Nearly every communist I've met has called it western propaganda.

And denial of atrocities should not be illegal. That is ridiculous. But that's Europe for you.

And I always hear that excuse, "Well, at least Mao wasn't racist!" Like that somehow makes it better. Racism is the ultimate crime to liberals.

I've been listening to a guy named Lazlo Montgomery, who runs 'The China History Podcast,' about The Cultural Revolution. I'd had NO idea just how bad it was; Chinese history really wasn't covered at all in any of my history classes, including at the University level. I've been horrified not just by the deaths, but by the Animal-Farm-like atmosphere of thought control, the constant playing of one group off of another, and by the 'values' espoused by Mao.

I'm economically a socialist, but that guy was evil.

not if I specify...

Communist Left, but I don't see how they differ from the Fascist Left.

% of GDP spent by the state is one barometer. There are states like my home country of Tonga where the state accounts for most of the economy, and we provide free health care, but we are not ideologically left-wing.

But that doesn't make Tonga left-wing. It doesn't adhere to one of the leftwing's trinity of Race, Gender, and Class. Nor are its policies animated by Environmentalism, Collectivism, Compassion, Secularism, Multiculturalism, Tolerance, and Equality.

So I am speaking specifically about places that do have a high % of its GDP being driven by the state, but with a history where the state has been a collectivist force, was built upon class warfare, and whose animated by many of the following: Collectivism, Compassion, Secularism, and Equality. The ones who fit the bill are the countries who went communist over the last 100 years. Nazism died, and we destroyed fascism, the only left wing collectivist movement that actually survived.. and went on to conquer most of the world was communism. I hope that helps.

Well racism is a big deal because you can make a person feel more sh*tty about themselves by calling them a racist then by calling them a classist, or a 1%'er.

It is emotional blackmail, and not caring about results: "50 million dead", but rather, intentions: "Mao wasn't racist, and he probably meant well."

Intentions guides the judgement of the Left in everything. "We Care" or "We don't want children to suffer" or "At least Mao wasn't racist"...

O.K. It was slaughter on a grand scale and not genocide. Mao was a butcher. He and his buddies killed many more people than did Hitler and his buddies.
