With all of this talk of Gun Control, and the demonizing of AS in the general public, do you think that those of us with AS will be declared "dangers to ourselves and others" and those of us with a "special" interest in guns be forced to relinquish what we have?

Personally, I see a slippery slope to second class citizenship, I just hope i'm wrong.

I definitely see this as a possibility. It's a good reason to keep a diagnosis off the books.

Mass shootings are far too rare to do a controlled study on the probability that someone with a given diagnosis will commit one.

I don't entirely buy that there's a demonizing of AS in the general public. I think it's just a very small group of ignorant individuals who feel that way. I was reading through the comments on one article about the shooter having AS, and most of the comments were supportive. The negative comments got a lot of thumbs-down. Most media outlets are being pretty reasonable about the killer (maybe) having AS.

Public outcry has more power than logic or common sense.

Yes.

It is entirely within the realm of possibility.

If I had to forfeit my firearms, I wouldn't start a fight over it. I'd rather not be incarcerated or hauled off to an institution.

Back in 2005 when San Francisco passed measure H to ban handguns. The law contained a clause requiring police to go house to house to confiscate guns that were not surrendered or taken out of town within a prescribed timeframe, and the police union went berserk opposing that. The measure passed but lost in court since gun laws are regulated by the state or federal government alone.

Firearms have nothing to do with it. If people start chipping away at our rights, you think they'll stop there?



That's the case now. But if they speculate that every single infamous crackpot has AS, the general public is eventually gonna think of AS, and think of primarily violent criminals instead of that one guy down the street, or their friend's kid, and negativity will gradually increase.

I don't seriously think this is going to happen, it just bothers me enough that I'm quite happy without an official diagnosis.

After CNN quoting Autism ("Autism is like cancer and AIDS") Speaks, I put nothing beyond the realm of possibility.

Autism Speaks' statements on the web have been fairly level headed on this one. IMHO, we should all give them a pass this time.

NT supremacist groups can occasionally suppress their intentions when it suits them, I should think.
The fact that CNN quoted them was my point.

I don't know how the US will go in regards to AS and firearms. I think they'll prefer to ban sales of semi-auto long arms for everyone and also ban sales of mags with more than 10 rounds (I'm sure they realize that the "assault weapons" ban was more cosmetic than actually functional), and then probably include greater medical checks overall when purchasing a firearm -- which will probably ask something like if you're receiving treatment for a mental illness/disorder, and if you are, you're then prohibited to purchase such (naturally, this could include so many people due to anti-depressant use for things like "mild" depression). No sunset clause. Grandfathering of the banned items so people still get to keep what they have.

Hopefully I'm wrong for you dudes [and dudettes] who have such as a special interest (and those who have it as a hobby and whatnot).

There seems to be a natural progression to these things that makes them easy to predict (naturally, it won't actually have any effect on crime and massacres, but we all know that).

What about computer owners with AS. An open invitation to Hacker Hell?
