as for the original poster, queensland will take you and your hyper-sensitive republicanism, it's a great place for that. if you can ignore the whole monarch business, and the option of tea over coffee (you can get used to it), the cane toad problem, and the snakes, and the fact that driving 200 miles will only take you to the next town, not the next state. it's a nice place to live, but, it's a bit like florida.
perhaps robina, it's a 20 minute drive from the gold coast, 30 minutes form brisbane city, and has a golf course, mall and retirement townhouses spread over the rest of the land.
google earth/google maps would be indicative.
don't forget the super poisonious spiders either. They will build webs in your shoes.
