Whoops!

Children are 'upset' by online violence, study finds
  • Researchers say too much attention paid to pornography and bullying when children also upset by violence and animal cruelty
Children are as upset by violent videos on YouTube that feature animal cruelty or beheadings and by insensitive Facebook messages from divorced parents as they are by online bullying and pornography, according to the biggest survey of young British people and their internet use.

The research will be unveiled by the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) on Tuesday – the 10th annual Safer Internet Day – when a charter of rights and responsibilities for children online will also be launched. The findings suggest that government policy, spearheaded by David Cameron, to block sexual content and pornography through parental controls and filters via internet service providers only goes part of the way to securing the online safety of children.

The survey, conducted for the council by academics, asked 24,000 children 25 questions about internet use, including "have you ever seen anything online that has upset you?" Hundreds of schools around Britain were enlisted to help canvass the children, who were aged up to 16.
...
Accessing pornography online, the main concern of parents responding to a government consultation last autumn, did not feature highly in the teenagers' responses.

That for all the ludicrous wailing of moralist social conservatives and illiberal feminists, they are actually in the wrong about porn.

Ok, thanks.

Whilst I don't think porn is as bad as people make out, I don't think that young people not finding it distressing proves that it isn't a bad thing. I mean, many people don't find being brainwashed into an evil ideology (take your pick from any ideology you dislike, racism, communism, any given religion or cult, supporting a sports team...) to be distressing, doesn't mean the brainwashing isn't bad for them. We'd probably be better off looking at the effect of watching lots of porn on sexual violence and inappropriate sexual behaviour.

Or we could look at the correlation between countries where porn is available and where porn isn't available and the effect that it has on sexual violence.

(Hint: those countries where porn is available tend to have lower rape rates.)

I'm not surprised actually. A lot of teens actually seek porn (the stereotype is boys who seek porn but some girls do to). However, I doubt many of them want to see Islamists cutting people's heads off.

I saw the Kenneth Bigley and Nick Berg beheadings and also the stoning of women in Afghanistan. I've also read some accounts of what goes on at Chop Chop Square in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia as well as bits of the Traces of Death series. I don't need to see any more of this stuff. It deadens and desensitises you to real human pain and suffering.

Teenagers are upset by videos of animal cruelty and beheadings, you don't say? Sounds like your tax money is being well spent across the pond.

Indeed.

The UKCCIS is another bloody quango by the sounds of it.
