A former US Navy Seal sniper has been shot dead at a shooting range in Texas, according to reports.

Chris Kyle, who also wrote the best-selling book, American Sniper, was killed alongside another man.

It is believed the 38-year-old had been helping a soldier who was recovering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Local newspapers have quoted Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant who said the pair were found dead on Saturday afternoon at Rough Creek Lodge's shooting range, which is about an hour from Fort Worth.

The Star-Telegram reported that witnesses told police a gunman opened fire on the men, then fled in a truck belonging to one of the victims.

The newspapers said a 25-year-old man was later taken into custody in Lancaster, southeast of Dallas. The motive is unclear.

Scott McEwen, who co-wrote American Sniper, paid tribute to his friend.

"It just comes as a shock and it's staggering to think that after all Chris has been through, that this is how he meets his end, because there are so many ways he could have been killed," he said.

American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in US Military History details Kyle's four combat tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom and the two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars he was awarded for bravery.

It has been claimed he killed 160 people during his career.

After leaving the Navy he founded Craft International, a company that provided combat and weapons training to military, police and corporate and civilian clients.

This guy was awarded stars and honours for killing over 160 people? Yet, Timothy McVeigh gets sent to death for killing over 160 people? Don't get that. :?

Congratulations. You have nullified context.

Would you classify the American airmen that bombed the German synthetic oil factories and killed many more in doing so, as criminals?

Those who kill, are, by definition, murderers. Emotions always cloud discussions.

Looks like, once again, an insane shooter was under the influence of prescribed psychotropic drugs. Good job, modern psychiatry and your easy solutions! Good job, big pharma and your intense lobbying efforts! Good job, mainstream media and your constant stream of lucrative pharmaceutical commercials promising a brave new world!

murder
/ˈmərdər/
Noun
The unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another.
Verb
Kill (someone) unlawfully and with premeditation.
Bold is mine

Once again, that word does not mean what you think it means.

I did a little research and the shooter was a former Marine with severe PTSD. Nobody seems to know why he did it yet. There's going to be a lot of people on the internet questioning why he took someone unstable shooting. In the local culture, going shooting is a relaxing hobby. It's like how people elsewhere go golfing.

Look for PTSD to still be stigmatized.

All a product of the forever war, and the idea science can fix any problem.

It starts a while back, "The Road to Miltown," an early trank, followed by a time when half the country had scripts for barbs and speed. That lead to a major pullback when the strange started happening, and anti drug hysteria took it's place.

The largest all time drug bust was when the shrinks and drug companies were found to be giving out scripts for things that did not even exist.

The Nam had some burnouts, but with a tour being a year and out, and civilian life being a bit strange, they blended in.

We have never had troops in combat for year after year, and the Marines came out and said, six months, after that things start falling apart.

So we are getting the new strange, the vet who shot his cop wife, this guy who shoots two guys who took him to the range. More is coming, and drugs will not stop it.

On the homefront we have more failure due to excess education, where trying hard is just digging a hole, education debt, realizing that even with the education, good jobs go to the connected, just as they always have.

People who were out of the service were called back, people who signed up for four years were kept longer.

The War, is not like any other war. It did not take ten years to beat Saddam, it was a decade of killing anyone who wanted something other than our appointed government. Afganistan is the same, occupied, puppet government, this is not a war, it is a business deal.

Heros sign up to defend their country, wind up leveling some Iraqi town that is in the way of an oil company plan, see thousands of fellow troops go home in a box, and are not allowed to quit, the tour never ends, the hitch is extended, and every day they have to live with killing people because they are told to.

It is not war, they are killing civilians, they are killing people who are defending their country, homes, families, from invaders.

Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, but between 100,000 and 1,000,000 were killed for being there. 5,000 of our own died, and Iraq is not safer for anything, and Americans are not welcomed as liberators.

Afganistan-Pakistan are worse. Drones are taking out houses where three generations live together, because there might have been a visitor.

Weddings and funerals are targeted, because people gather.

Enemy is defined as anyone between 15 and 65.

The Russians had twice the troops, shorter supply lines, and lost.

This is Viet Nam done cheaply. The results will be the same.

This is not lost on our troops, they can feel lied to and used, or accept that we kill people so we can take their stuff.

Neither is a good mind set for returning troops.

There are going to be future problems, and the worst is, if we get into a real war, with someone who can fight back, where we would lose thousands a day. Love of country has been cancelled.

The homosexual out has been canceled, women moved to the front line for combat, because enlistment has dropped off.

We have larger problems than social stress.

Yes, in the case of self defense, defense of another, defense of your home, including defense of your country. Then it is known legally as self-defense or justifiable homicide. Murder implies malicious intentions when you are not threatened.
