As I understand it: The author of the Neanderthal Theory of neurodiversity blames the current hostility towards the neurodiverse on globalization. He blames cheap oil for globalization. In other words, he blames cheap oil for the hostility towards the neurodiverse.

However, as I understand it, in Islamic countries (at least the vast majority of them) they have been hostile towards the neurodiverse for hundreds of years -- since the fall of empires such as the Ottomans. Indeed, he has speculated/stated that the hostility towards the neurodiverse was the cause or at least a factor in their demise.

It seems to me that while cheap oil may be the current cause of the hostility towards the neurodiverse, it isn't necessary. Perhaps fortuitous wind (READ: WIND POWERED VESSELS USED FOR TRADE) and regionalization is another possible cause. But this brings up some questions. What about other civilizations powered by fortuitous wind ? What about the fall of the Roman Empire? As far as I know, Southern Europe is not as hostile as Northern Africa and the Middle East (or even the United States of Psychiatric Syndromes). Did they go through the same phase? Did they start going through such a phase but the ingenious ideas of Christians such as various methods of shaming Roman oppressors (example: walk an extra 1000 paces) force change, even in the eastern half that continued to survive?

What about other civilizations powered by fortuitous wind? The Polynesians? I suspect that the Polynesians still tended to rely on local production and didn't reach the social complexity despite their seafaring, but I don't know. Are Southern Europe and Northern Africa and the Middle East anomalies? Can we thank Christianity for Rome being an anomaly of an anomaly?

Is it that all empires are hostile to the neurodiverse, those empires benefiting from fortuitous wind can become genocidal, and those benefiting from cheap oil will become genocidal?

In America, I doubt any of the tactics in the Bible can turn things around. Even worse, there is an Islam that makes the Fourth Reich seem pretty progressive by comparison. If you did the equivalent of walking an extra 1000 paces, how would Faux News spin that? If you protest nukes in the nude, well, we all know who is considered shameful in that case. As David Icke said, "everything is upside-down..."

Those who rule America, like their Roman, Islamic, and various other counterparts do not respect the fundamental rights of sentient beings. I can imagine mental injury, but I am sure genuine mental illness is very rare. There is a movement to change the name of "Post-traumatic stress disorder" to "Post-traumatic stress injury", at least that would be a move in the right direction. New York and California have succeeded, and the American Senate has tried to grab the guns of the "mentally ill". I suspect that Obama and the American Psychiatric Association are trying to spark a revolution/civil war. Unfortunately, I don't think the forming opposition such as the Tea Party is any less fascist or really believes in fundamental rights either, but that is another story (and they recently lost most of the influence they had, only the House still stands in the way and the Senate will never get the 60 votes for impeachment no matter what Obama does). We don't grab guns because you have cancer, or have broken legs and need a wheelchair. This country was founded on the right to make your own decisions, even foolish ones. The idea was that if your foolish actions harm others, you would be dealt with after the deed in a civil case. America was not founded on the ideas of safety, preemption, order, and being the obedient children of authority figures such as the Fuhrer in the Third Reich. A lot more can be said about this if I were to drag in yet more topics.

Rather than grab guns of the "mentally ill" (and do God-knows-what-else to them), how about taking the cars away from people who text and drive? Then put them on a "no vehicle" list. Wouldn't this have a better risk/reward ratio?

I gave up reading this after a couple of paragraphs. I cannot work out if this is someone having a laugh or not. To me, it reads like one of the top 10 most gobbledegook pieces of writing I have seen.

"Fortuitous wind", is this a synonym for "hot air"..?

If you are being serious, apologies but you need to explain what you mean in a more direct and less flowery way.

A few other things:

It seems that having competition dominated by large, impersonal, hierarchical organizations favors wide and shallow relationships over those that are narrow and deep. In today's world in order to be successful you need to be able to meet strangers and network. I have heard a claim that psychopaths don't care what any one individual thinks, they only care what groups of people think. Could it be that psychopathy and perhaps narcissism are recently evolved traits that regionalization/globalization brought about by cheap transportation and cheap power sources favors?

In deindustrializing countries, hardly anyone produces anything. Almost all of the jobs are sales, marketing, or administrative positions. In industrializing countries, people are flocking to cities and drive down wages as subsidized Big Food puts them out of business. Production no longer pays.

All strata of society of society have become hostile to the neurodiverse. Neurologically Typical Parents Shriek was founded by someone at a high level of a megacorporation that hasn't paid taxes in 10 years and his wife -- Bob Wright of NBC Universal (General Electric) and Suzanne Wright. But you can be sure that parents of neurodiverse children were important in the success of Neurologically Typical Parents Shriek. It is hard to find anyone publicly claim that autistics are not the problem, it is society. Usually the only ones who make the claim are neurodiverse themselves. Even among the neurodiverse, probably roughly half believe the "professionals" and are self-hating.

Most Americans are all for cheap oil, for it is essential to our "way of life", perhaps at any costs. They get mad and paranoid whenever the price rises, which is often, as the demand is inelastic. Small changes in demand dramatically affect the price. The Russians no longer support our interventions in the Middle East and Northern Africa and seem to be drawing the line with Syria. What will happen when the government of America has to choose between accepting expensive oil and WWIII? How will the media portray Obama if he chooses the former? As appeasing enemies and failing to protect national interests, failing to protect people from genocidal governments, failing to provide world leadership and prevent a breakdown of international order and tranquility or some other war-mongering spin? Will we get a revolt against the government for "failing the people" because it didn't make clear to the rest of the world that our way of life isn't negotiable?

None of the above would be possible without the regionalization / globalization cheap transportation and power sources allow. Still, I cannot help but think I'm missing something, as most of the above problems caused by cheap oil and cheap modern transportation are way beyond (by orders of magnitude) the problems caused by regionalization and "fortuitous wind."

This is my wording for the powering of ships used for trade with wind. Today they are powered with diesel fuel, which of course is derived from petroleum.

Wind power made regionalization possible, where the winds and geography is right. Cheap oil makes globalization possible.

Northern Africa and the Middle East lie along the Mediterranean Sea. This area has been of strategic importance for millenia.

DSH, are you refering to RDOS's neurodiversity theories? I do recall that he discusses globalization in passing at some point.

If I'm reading the OP's first paragraph as intended, the arguement appears to be governments/nations/empires/rulers that can rely on cheap transportation or power sources have more hostility towards neurodiversity. Am I reading this correctly?

That is the point. I think you got my message even better than I did. :D :!:

The guns issue in America is pretty stupid. There are countries all over the world that are far better off then the states because they have controls on guns but the people of America point to the constitutional right to bear arms for there defense. I would tell those people to go back in history 200 years to see why guns were added to the constitution, they will find that guns were used by americans to control their slaves.

It is actually a pointless issue, other than the fact that the gun grab shows that the government doesn't respect your rights. The government demonstrates this in many other ways as well. How can you win a revolution using guns? The government has had helicopters, tanks, and a standing army for decades. Now they can use drones against you.

Plus, while the Tea Party has support of 44% of the population according to Faux, if Romney is right, Obama has 47%, leaving 9% undecided. Doesn't look good for the opposition, does it?

I will not write "citation needed" again because I suspect that you are using "innovation" as a proxy for "neurodiverse" and there is indeed a theory that hostility to innovation was the cause of the problems and eventual collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

A counter example - Renaissance Italy.

Their city states lived largely from international trade, however there is strong reasons to suspect that they were neurodiverse-friendley (at least there is a theory that Michaelangelo had AS, and many other figures of the time were also a bit "eccentric")

a lot of things are wrong with your statement, first the second amendment exist to protect the first amendment they are both first and second on the constitution because they are two of the most important rights for a free society. you cant run a tyrannical dictatorship if the people you are trying to oppress are armed. if you look through history one of the first things dictators do is disarm the people. when your first amendment is oppressed you use the second to overthrow the tyranny. second at the time of the country's founding practically all the army's weapons were privately owned including the artillery and warships. third if you actually look through history the majority of Americans did not own slaves, slaves were a thing of the rich and elite.

the second amendment exist to keep you from being a slave not to control slaves.

The government is working on taking our guns away. They will take us away next.

This is something that RDOS believes, and no doubt many other people. In any case, do you seriously think they are not hostile to the neurodiverse now?

I suppose that they may have developed oligopolies and monopolies, in which case they may have become hostile to disruptive innovation (probably almost all innovation). Rather what I am writing about has more to do with things mentioned in the second post I made in this thread (which has been heavily updated).

I speculated above that Renaissance Italy, and for that matter the Holy Roman Empire (the half of the Roman Empire that survived) was an anomaly of an anomaly because of Christianity.

At least if we have our guns, they have to use drone strikes against those who won't willingly go to the mass detention camps?

Anyway, if you are a diagnosed autistic, you probably aren't a big enough threat to be sent to the mass detention camps. I suppose you could resist going to the psychiatric ward and go to wooden box six feet under instead.

the only problem with that is the people outnumber the goverment by a lot. yeah we aspies might be in trouble because we are a minority but as a whole the goverment still has a while to go before they can take on everyone. there current track record of fighting an insurgency is not looking too good at this point. even if they did ban all guns all it takes is some metal a hammer and a few metal files to make a gun. its how they do it in Pakistan and the Philippines. with the 3d printer coming on the scene its even easier. right now you can literally download a gun.
