When I read this combined with the word India, my first thought was that it is about Sikhs. And they are required to carry it at all times.

I had no idea of that.I noticed one guy lost his sword and tried to take another's guys spear or what ever that was,spear guy wouldn't turn loose of his weapon.

There are lots of Sikh cab drivers in New York City. None carry swords.

A sword might come in handy as a cab driver.Keeps the passengers in order. :D

I wonder if they actually still train in using them or if they just carry them for ceremonial reasons

The guy I worked with didn't - it was entirely symbolic to him.
Also, he'd look a bit daft waving his around because it was about as threatening as a cocktail stick. :lol:

Cornflake gave a link to some more information. But I would guess that openly carrying swords is against the law in New York City, might have something to do with that ;)
