there were two adopted Chinese girls who went to my (reform) synagogue. they were young so I'm not sure how they self define now that they are older. from the outside they seemed to live a normal lifestyle and the kids as well as adults did not treat them any differently...
there was also an adopted heretically Irish boy at my synagogue, I knew him well and he was old enough to decide to consider himself religiously Jewish, although he did struggle a lot with identity and was quite a trouble maker. he's in jail now.
any thoughts on adopted non-heretically Jewish people?
whats to think about?
Jews are both a religion and an ethnic group. So they tend to have a common ancestry. But there is no reason that folks of Gentile extraction cant convert (like Sammy Davis Jr.), or cant be adopted and cant grow up to join Judaism as a religion.
And even religions that are "just religions", and not considered ethnic groups are linked to ethnicity ( Catholicism is linked Polish identity, and to Irish identity, and Protestantism is still a part of the core of American culture).
