Our government has made us ALL into thieves.
Our government has made us ALL into thieves.
Taxes on goods and services.
Governments have turned to taxing goods and services (GST), instead of taxing income to extract the funds they need from you and I to pay for their various programs. GST’s are regressive taxes, because as a person’s income decreases, his rate of tax increases.
In such a tax system, the less you earn, the more, as a percentage of your income, you pay into that tax system. For instance, if you earn $10,000 per year and pay a GST of 15%, you will pay $1,500 in tax. If you earn $20,000 per year, and buy the same amount of goods and services, you will pay the same $1,500 in tax, but as a percentage of your income, as compared to the poorer buyer, you will only pay ½ the amount of tax dollars, in terms of percentage of income. The higher your income, the less of a percentage of tax you will pay, as compared to those who earn less than you do.
That is why such goods and services tax are considered to be regressive taxes. They penalize the poor while benefiting the richer, on a sliding scale.
Poverty is the worst form of violence. – Ghandi
Each and every one of us is kicking those below us further into poverty thanks to our regressive GST tax system. The richer you are, the harder you are kicking the poor. Middle and lower income earners are not kicking the poorest as hard but we are getting our kicks in anyway.
The Golden Rule is considered by most to be the best moral rule that we know.
With our regressive GST tax system, we are doing the opposite of the Golden Rule by doing unto the poor what we would not want done to us if we are poor.
Should we all be proud of ourselves for doing violence to our poorer fellow countrymen?

It's a blue state. Though every year or so they try to pass a sales tax, while keeping the income tax. They want to double m triple dip.
They also want to do a Milleage tax while keeping the gas tax. Greedy liberals.
Eh. No.

Right now the rich have republicans pushing our nation's "wild west mentality" to extreme biased unfair and unnecessary levels heavily weighed against the non-rich. The endgame is simple. They don't want anyone below them to have any money anymore. What happens after that is all bad. The American Dream has been dying since Reagan's era, crippled further as of Clinton's NAFTA and as of Citizens United, it's officially dead...accept it. TPP is just going to beat the dead horse.

It's democrats top. Do you think Bloomberg wants to share his money or Clinton. If so they'd have donated it all to the people. Both parties are owned and run by the rich to make them more money and keep what they have.
More people becoming rich mean less money for them. Their goal is to take all the middle class money until the 99% are all poor people. All so they can compare with each other how much money they have and never spend it.
When this all comes down, they'll jet off to China and do the same there.
Eh. No.

Yes, they will leave the U.S. and rinse and repeat all over the rest of the world, but what happens to the 99%? Will they just decide they don't need the 99% anymore and dispose of everyone? There will be a lot of civil unrest over the fact that 99% of the human population ends up broke. Either someone up top must realize that the rich have gone too far and reverse everything or privatized police and military will be suppressing the public for the rest of time. The only freedom we'll have is the freedom to die if we don't follow orders.

Check the stats. The color does not matter much today.

Like in the past people will rise up when they've had enough. It'll be bloody and the 1% and their gaurds will be killed, the world will never be the same again, mbut they don't care they just want more and more money they won't even use.
Well therein lies the problem, the bottom 99% sees money as a way to pay for the services they need. The top 1% sees it for what it is: power. Money is your power to stay fed, your power in society (social status), it's your power over other people (payoffs/bribes/kickbacks if you have enough of it). So yes, they use the money, but not in the ways the 99% do, or even understand for that matter.
If you're not convinced they are the same thing here's an illustration: Politics is about raw power, politicians have the power to enact laws that the state will enforce on the population (power). Businesses exercise trade to gain money, the more money they acquire the more powerful their businesses are compared to other similar businesses. Now let's say the business owner doesn't like a law that negatively impacts his ability to gain money, he will transfer some of his monetary power to the hands of a politician so the politicians can exercise political power on his behalf. Likewise, if the politician wants monetary power he will trade his political power in exchange. It's merely converting one form of power into another, just like a currency exchange. People get confused because they've been taught that money and power are two different things, but the fact is that when you can transmute one into the other they in essence become the same thing.
There are multiple issues a government needs to address when deciding on how to design a tax:
The OP only mentions one aspect... the distributional impact of the tax... Other issues (not exhaustive) are:
- Dead-weight loss (and more specifically, the Excess burden of taxation)
- External efficiency (like the Double Dividend)
- Revenue Maximization (like the Laffer curve)
The above issues might contradict or complement each other... Take a tax on gasoline, for instance:
The demand for gasoline is relatively inelastic, meaning that taxing gasoline will likely yield lower dead-weight losses to society per dollar raised than taxing highly elastic luxury goods (this would also suggest that the revenue maximizing level of taxation would be quite high, at least in the short run*).
... At the same time, a double dividend (though also reduced in scope due to the very same tax in-elasticity) can be achieved as gasoline generates negative externalities through pollution.
On the other hand, a gasoline tax is somewhat** regressive, as a low-income household likely spend a larger percentage of their income on gasoline than a high-income household.
*In the long run, however, a lot of people would likely shift to a different mode of transportation if faced with very high gasoline taxes, thus reducing the revenue...
**However, a gasoline tax is actually progressive wrt. people who cannot afford a car (or any motor vehicle), as they are thus 100% exempt from the tax...

It does all get complicated when looking at all the marbles in the bag.
That is why I look at one marble at a time as all I want to throw away are the cracked ones.
That seems to be what this state did.

As I was saying -----
As the Tax Research briefing argues, a regressive tax is almost universally agreed to be one where the proportion of an individual’s income expended on that tax falls as they progress up the income scale. VAT is a regressive tax. - See more at: http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2011 ... 3Uo3V.dpuf
