Right now where I live there's a trend toward turning to sales tax in order to fund everything. Now there's a push to fund education with a one cent increase in the tax and it might not seem like much but in my town, the penny increase is already utilized to fund improvements in infrastructure so this new tax will be added to an existing one.
The politicians have defunded education even more than necessary. I believe it's to psychologically exhaust the public into voting yes on this sales tax increase because they worry standards will go to low. It's a scare tactic so now this sales tax increase is projected to pass without the public realizing what a big deal it is since it's permanent and opens the door to new future sales tax proposals because opportunists recognize sales tax increases are an easy source of revenue.
Another thing that's been pointed out is the raise promised to teachers if this new tax passes is, in fact, not really a raise. It's a new tax they will have to pay. That's not a legitimate raise. That's a scam! Why are people so fooled by these tactics? When Republican politicians snap their fingers, where I live, the people automatically roll over without hesitation. They do not think critically enough in their blind partisanship.

It worked in the UK when VAT was increased to 20%.

It's a temporary fix since it will need to be increased to cover future costs. Same with this sales tax. The one who is responsible for it already said it's not enough, just a start which means they are planning to increase it again.

You can't deduct it either, like property taxes.

Next they will introduce a "service tax" like getting your haircut will be taxed.

This on top of all the other taxes including a lottery that was supposed to help education so much. We are being taxed within an inch of our lives under these Republicans! And people believe Republicans will fix everything and take all their problems away.

They never stop taxing.

Lol
It's politicians
The democrats are in complete charge of both houses and governor in my state they want to do it come tax and sales tax. Gas tax and Mileage tax. Raise property tax yearly it seems, they've also blown the lottery tax on non education stuff and spent all the budget on stuff like a train project no one wanted or building a bus system for population 50 years from now. Or just hiding it away for personal use. They also are wanting to increase the registration fees for cars. Tax tax tax that's all they think about besides destroying our freedom.

And some believe it's just Democrats when it's all government. They want more tax money, even the ones who pretend to have these virtues and morals. Some people are so partisan blind and easy to subdue, they honestly believe Republicans are these magical wishing wells who are going to change everything in favor of them and do everything they wish. Republicans who run this state talk about spending even more public funds on home and private schools. That would increase spending even more. They need to focus on funding what they already have and find ways to improve it without a sales tax increase.

Not only this, but I personally don't want to fund schools which I don't feel helped me like my own parent did until I see they have already improved them which I haven't experienced. So many people have been left behind by teachers, written off as lost causes and guess what, they found a way to tax us for something that didn't really benefit us. This is the sale tax. Everyone pays it regardless of income or social status.

If you have a successful career, make a lot of money and credit your teachers, you should pay more into it, imo, but if you feel like one who has been shut out without money or career, why should you have to pay?

If they were actually better I wouldn't mind so much but I dislike the idea of paying more for what it's like now.

I read and wrote, independently of the socialist school system, so can honestly say that I never learned anything, there, except for prison politics.

People say that social interaction should be coerced but not happen, spontaneously.

I'm a socialist who isn't against the concept of publically funded schools. They need a lot of improvement before I would feel good about spending sales tax money on them. What I've experienced hasn't been encouraging and until they are willing to change a few things, I don't see how a sales tax increase will help unless it's large and they can attract some really professional, progressive, innovators from out of state who are expert in turning things around. Hiring them would be pricier but you get what you pay for. I can see cheaper ways to improve but the union would likely disapprove. One sure way to help is simply more teachers in each elementary school class. Having two teachers would have helped us a lot since we were divided pretty much into two groups. The ones sitting close to where the teacher stood got the most attention while the rest of us she didn't have time to mess with. This is why, either, the class room should be smaller or two teachers per class. In order for this to happen, salaries would need to be less, not more. The easiest way to keep costs down is if the requirements are lessened to something like a votech certificate, similar to what day care instructors have. It doesn't matter how educated one teacher is, it's not going to stop the effects of overwhelming so too many students will impair their ability to effectively perform regardless. I see overwhelming as the main problem.
