Are we naming Islamist or secular countries.

The article is talking about Arab countries in particular.

It is a response to Netanyahu's bogus and false statement (and to those who believe him) claiming that Israel is the only country in the ME where Christians can celebrate Christmas.

As you can see in the article (which is written by a lebanese christian btw) and in the pictures, his statement is completely bogus and false.

Christians in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt have been celebrate Christmas since ever.

Hell, even in Turkey they celebrate Christmas.

He might not be in office much longer

In Lebanon with your massive Maronite Population. I guess you would be allowed to celebrate Christmas. But the story is different in many other Arab countries. In Egypt for instance where they talk about Christians being able to celebrate their is immense persecution. Take for instance the Maspero demonstrations in which 23 Coptic Christians were killed and the numerous Christmas attacks that have been launched on these communities. Maybe officially its legal but the persecution is there and it hinders their ability to do these practices.

Not only for the Maronites, for instance today is an official bank holiday here and I can hear the bells from the Armenian-orthodox church nearby while I am typing this post, it's their Christmas.

The comparison is different. We are talking about violence and widespread oppression against the Christian people Israel mostly doesn't follow that. Many Jews are secular and are absolutely fine with the display of Christmas trees. Your country Lebanon does happen to be an exception because your country can't survive if different religious groups are turned against one another. Not only that but your country has been fortunate to give representation to multiple groups hence why your president is always Christian.

But for many other Muslim countries this simply isn't the case.

Depends what your definition of Muslim country is. By your logic none of Europe is Christian only countries like Uganda are.

By my logic, Europe is secular and very liberal; it's being overun, by competing worldviews, to the point of collapse.

Iran was fairly enlightened, before the Shas were installed, and Arabs can be informal as well as warlike.

Some people are basically secular, but view religious custom, much in the same regard as Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed. They are not vehemently for or against it. It's just popular myth and folk heroes, to them. They won't decapitate you, over it, sometimes.

Dude- Boo is responding to Netanyahu, and what Netanyahu said was not rocket science. It was pretty simple.

Saying "only country...that allows it" - N means "all countries in the middle east that are not israel forbid it".
It aint complicated. All countries means "all countries".

All countries not Israel in the middle east" in effect means all majority muslim countries of the Arab world and Iran and Turkey.

What Boo is saying is that that statement is wrong. Many Arab muslim majority countries DO allow big and publicly displayed Xmas celebration. Pretty simple response to N's simple statement.


Second -there are no "secular countries" in the Middle East.

We all know from "conservatism 101" that a "nation" is its people, and not its government. The USA has a secular government, but the majority of the population is Christian, and churchgoing Christian at that - that makes America a "Christian country".

Likewise Arab nations with majority Muslim populations are still "Muslim countries" even if they have secular governments.

But you may be right that if you parse it your way- Islamist regimes maybe less tolerant of Christmas than are secular regimes in the same middle east region. But Netanyahu didnt parse it that way. And Boo is responding to Netanyahu, and so Boo doesnt need to parse that way either.
