Rashan Charles a young black male from East London died in police custody. Footage emerged of a police officer trying tor restrain and remove something from his throat. The police allegedly removed an object from his throat.

Protests with some violence and vandalism have taken place. The family of Rashan have condemned the violence and threats to police.

Another youth Edson Da Costa died under similar circumstances recently, however in his case several packages were recovered by the pathologist after death.

Now the police may not be following the ideal protocol, however it is not conceivable that they are concerned about this trend of swallowing and had his well being in mind? Rather than acting in pure malice?

Even if the procedure was wrong, if the police officer was trained with this procedure, then he is following the protocol or at least using his judgment in light of a volatile situation. There could be a containment policy, however the person is of risk is dying anyway, and there are other factors like theenvironment, support, etc, which affect the feasibility of this.

I know in some police chases the police are told to back off if the driver is putting others at risk, if and until they can safely engage. However this can go both ways, sometimes it it best to prevent the chase from continuing at all costs.

I think in the case where a group may be treated unfairly, it think it is important for that group to differentiate themselves from those that aren't doing the community's reputation any good.

It would be useful to look at the overall trend of swallowing, across different demographics over time.

Also police stations don't always have access to scanners and medical equipment and it can cause a lot of disruption in hospitals, trying to treat an uncooperative patient and keep them an everyone else secure.

Gangs have been know to visit hospital to attack their rivals or get retribution.

The death Mark Duggan caused national riots. Rioters freely admitted fueling the chaos that ensued to use as an excuse to target specific businesses such as mobile phone, electronic, sportswear stores. They also caused a massive amount of damage to small businesses especially in an area I grew up in, which is very diverse. I'm very proud of the community's response to that. Especially in cases like helping fund the rebuilding of a party shop which had been there for years and was burnt down, while poor people living above nearly died due to being trapped. Such poor people unlike the people that rioted, had no access to housing and welfare that the average rioter did. They worked hard legally, and may have come here feeling harsh economic conditions and politcal persecution.

There were several investigations of the demise of Mark Duggan. it went to the high court. All of these found that the police acted lawfully in killing Mark Duggan. They don't always find in favour of the police. The police acted on intelligence of a transfer an illegal firearm, with an imminent treat it would be used. The person that was in previous possession of the firearm, was a member of a well know gang and had used it to pistol whip and extort money out of a hair salon in a black community near where I live. He was convinced for his crime, this was not used in evidence in Duggan's original inquest as this was an ongoing case, and therefore was restricted by legal prejudice rules.

I think there are case of police brutality, it is important that effort it made to distinguish the criminals from the innocent parties. Duggan is still held up as a martyr by some and i think this is damaging to the communities that were affected by this.

Even if Duggan fear for his life which is probable, this was large a risk attributed to lifestyle.

I have life in places like Johannesburg South Africa, Brazil, Luanda Angola, Kingston Jamaica. London is considerably safer overall than those places, but these people are playing at being gangsters and that is what causes issues for them. The biggest victim of their antics are their own communities.
