In response to the "all the pro-war people" thread, how many people actually like or love war for its own sake?

(Also, how many people love slaving away at a difficult full-time job for its own sake?
Gee, maybe it's the positive result we're in it for, ya think??
I'd have to say I wouldn't have worked most of the jobs I've had
if I wasn't getting paid. How 'bout you?)

I don't think many would admit to liking war for its own sake. People like the idea of punishing an enemy. People are drawn to an "us vs them" mentality because it makes them feel powerful. Humans seem to like the idea of punishing evil more than the idea of preventing evil. I think vicarious rage - the need to punish on behalf of some collective grievance - is what’s making the whole world so insane these days. :(

I doubt there are many people who love war for its own sake, and even fewer who would admit to it. Most people would agree, I think, that war is a horrible thing - what gets argued over is whether it is worth the end result.

(And I do love my job. But I don't get paid for it just yet, so I don't know whether that counts :D )

Viewpoint 1: This isn't a liberal-conservative issue. As several US generals have pointed out, war is hell; evil people might love it.

Viewpoint 2: Liberals and hippies have been the main source of opposition to US elective wars. Conservatives have chanted the mantra "my country, right or wrong", which is a tacit admission that they are willing to support something that is wrong.

I don't like war. I find it necessary but to be avoided, definitely not at all costs however.

you're a real jerk, you know that? you spin my topic around into this stupidity.

of course no one will ever say "i love war!!" unless they're some military simp suckling off the government teat. still doesn't change that people in this country are ignorant and clamoring for war with iran and are in the dark with regards to iraq (and their relationship developing with iran).

I can appreciate the point, and the result.

Most people do not understand the science of war. So what is the point in descusing the moral implications of it.

I understand the science of war a bit and the American Civil war and Japanese-American Pacific War start on fair terms but they turned into total war by the end. If anyone going to argue that Vietnam or Iraq were our most costly then you're wrong. Over 600,000 Americans died in the American Civil War alone and this was from 1861-1865. War has no benefits it leads to more conflicts like WWI which leaded to WWII when everyone was giving into Hitler's expansionist policies. My Grandpa Jerry was almost killed by the Japanese aboard USS Franklin in 1945.

Nice, good for you, why don´t you tell the rest of us what "the science of war" is all about then? I really want to learn about "the science of war"!

You can start by explaining what it is.

I'm a libertarian, and I'm strongly against war.

Most people do not understand the science of cancer, but they understand the implications of a cancer diagnosis.

Doctors, who have an understanding of cancer, are responsible for dealing with cancer.

People, who don’t understand the science of war, are making the decisions. They do it in the name of god.
